Dometic CoolMatic fridges & ColdMachine units

CoolMatic is the name Dometic (and Waeco before it) gives its 12/24 V compressor fridges for boats and vans. The built-in uprights went from the Waeco CR 50–140 to the CRX 50, 65, 80, 110 and 140, which kept the same housing sizes, so installation frames and door seals carry over between a CR and a CRX of the same size; the type plate reads CRX00xx for 12/24 V DC models and CRX10xx for AC/DC models with a built-in mains supply. Next to them sit the CRD 50 drawer fridge, the CD 20 and CD 30 drawer coolers with a compressor that can be mounted separately, and the CRP 40 front-loader. For your own icebox the ColdMachine cooling units (sold earlier as CoolMatic too) come in three series, each paired with a VD evaporator: 50 (CU-54/55, up to 130 l) and 80 (CU-84/85/86, up to 250 l) with a Secop BD35F, 90 (CU-94/95/96, up to 400 l) with a BD50F. Dometic lists the CRX 50 and CRX 80 as replaced by the NRX 50C and NRX 80C; spare parts are ordered by the type-plate code (CRX0080, CR-1080 and so on).

Manuals & documents

The manuals and frame sheets come straight from Dometic’s servers. Since the NRX took over, the CRX product pages have left Dometic’s European sites, so the model data link to an archived copy on archive.org. The parts diagrams with Dometic numbers come from the French dealer mon-camping-car.com, which has the same for the CRX 50 S, 65 and 140 and the CD 20. We host no manuals.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Condenser cleaningAt regular intervals (Dometic gives no figure): clear dust and dirt from the condenser and keep the vents free; a dirty condenser is the manuals’ first suspect for long run times and an overheated electronic unit26,31,16,33
DefrostingAs soon as a layer of ice forms: switch off, empty, leave the door open and wipe up the water; never use sharp or hard tools on the ice, and keep the drain outlet clear26,16,33,32
GasketsClean the door or lid seal regularly (ColdMachine manual); when cleaning a CRX, CRD or CRP, keep water out of the seals, as it can damage the electronics. A damp, leaky drawer seal on a CD shows as long run times31,26,33,32,16
Storage / winterisingWhen laying up: switch off, disconnect from the battery or rectifier, defrost, clean and dry, then set the lock wheel to Vent (anticlockwise) so the door stays ajar26,61,33

From the Dometic manuals for the CRX, CR, CRD, CRP, CD and ColdMachine. Dometic sets no hour or month intervals; the refrigerant circuit is sealed and maintenance-free, so owner care comes down to condenser, ice, seals and lay-up.

Good to know

  • Order by the code on the type plate, not the catalogue name: CRX00xx is the 12/24 V version, CRX10xx the AC/DC one, and the CR of the same size often shares parts. The door seal 4450010223, for one, fits the CRX0080, CRX1080 and CR-1080, and the frame sheet that lists numbers for the CR 50–140 is the same one Dometic sells for the CRX.26,21,34,73
  • Disconnect the fridge before you put a quick charger on the battery: Dometic warns in every manual that the overvoltage can kill the electronics. Fault code 1 (supply voltage) is about the voltage at the fridge’s own terminals, so check fuse, cable size and connections before suspecting the electronics, and leave out extra switches and plugs.26,33,31
  • The lock wheel only turns with the door open; doing it with the door shut damages the fridge. Vent is the anticlockwise (left) stop and keeps the door ajar for lay-up. The English CRX manual says ‘right end stop’ in its storage step, while the German text and the CR and CRD manuals say left or anticlockwise.26,61,33
  • Use the fast-cooling mode of the CRX 50, 65 and 80 only with the freezer compartment taken out; with it in place the compartment gets too cold, condensation forms on the outside and consumption rises sharply. Below +16 °C ambient the CRX 110/140 AC/DC have a winter mode, and the CRP 40 compressor won’t start at all.26,32
  • The ColdMachine couplings are one-way: the first connection pierces a membrane, so oil the threads with ester oil, hold with two spanners (21 mm plus 19 or 16 mm), tighten to 30 Nm or a further quarter turn and leak-test. Opened again, the charge is lost and both halves go back to Dometic for new couplings and refrigerant.31
  • Short of space? The CD 20/30 compressor can be taken off and mounted elsewhere on a 1.5 m refrigerant line, and the CRP 40 cooling unit can sit up to 1.5 m from the fridge. The CD drawers still need 50 mm of free air on all four sides.16,32
