Standard Horizon GX1400 / GX1400GPS

The GX1400 is Standard Horizon’s compact fixed VHF of the Eclipse series: 25 W or 1 W, ITU-R M.493 Class D DSC with a separate channel 70 receiver, IPX8, only 100 mm deep behind a 156 × 61 mm front, and a microphone that is wired to the set rather than plugged in. It comes as the GX1400 without GPS (US codes GX1400B and GX1400W), as the GX1400GPS with a 66-channel receiver behind the front panel (sold in the US as GX1400G, GB and GW) and as the European GX1400GPS/E with ATIS for inland waterways, announced in the UK in October 2019. All of them take the same bracket, knobs, MMB-84 flush kit and HC1100 cover; the successor GX1410/GX1410G (ITU-R M.493-16) has the same size and the same knob, bracket and hanger numbers, and Standard Horizon USA now lists the GX1400 under Legacy. The older GX1300 Eclipse (GX1300E in Europe, 2015) has its own knobs and bracket and a 150 mm deep case, the GX1700 Explorer GPS takes the MMB-97 flush kit and a RAM3 second station, and the GX2400 Matrix adds AIS, NMEA 2000 and a RAM4 second station.

Wear parts & part numbers

PartOEM numberAlso fitsNote
Power cableT9025406 · T90284061,2,3,4,5,6,7—DC power cord with the 6 A fuse holder. The GX1400 owner’s manuals, English and the European language editions, list T9025406, the same number as for the GX1300, GX1600/GX1700 and GX2400; the 2019 service manual and the GX1410 manual give the DC cable as T9028406.
Fuse—1—6 A, 250 V, in the holder of the supplied power cord. To change it, pull the two halves of the holder apart without bending it and check that the new fuse sits tightly on the metal contact inside; a loose contact makes the holder heat up. Never cut the holder off the cord.
Mounting bracketRA6208600 · RA62085001,3,4,5—Bracket for dash or overhead mounting: RA6208600 black, RA6208500 white. The GX1410 uses the same numbers; the GX1300 bracket (RA097840A/RA097830A) is a different part.
Adjusting knobRA6204100 · RA62040001,3,4—Bracket knobs (two per radio) that clamp the set in its bracket: RA6204100 black, RA6204000 white; the GX1410 manual lists the same numbers.
Adjusting knobRA618990A · RA618980A1,3,4—VOL and SQL knobs: RA618990A black, RA618980A white (two per radio, the same on the GX1410).
Microphone hangerRA0458800 · RA04360001,3,5,6,7,4—Microphone hanger: RA0458800 black, RA0436000 white. Standard Horizon lists the same hanger for the GX1300, GX1600/GX1700, GX2400 (black) and GX1410.
Hand microphoneCS2596701 · CS25967023,1—Complete microphone with its curly cord (MIC-1 ASSY in the service manual): CS2596701 black, CS2596702 white. The radio has no microphone socket: the cord runs into the front panel, sealed with an O-ring and held by a lock plate, so a new one is fitted by a Standard Horizon service centre. The owner’s manual lists no separate handset.
CableT9207852 · T92078543—Curly microphone cord on its own (wire assy, curl cable): T9207852 black, T9207854 white, from the service manual’s exploded view; it is part of the microphone assembly above.
Distress key coverRA6058100 · RA60582003—Spring-loaded cover over the red DISTRESS key, RA6058100, and its kick spring RA6058200 (service manual exploded view).
Display lens / frontRA62065003—Display window (WINDOW M065N), stuck to the front panel with the double-sided pad RA6206600.
BezelRA620640A · RA620630A3—Front panel: RA620640A black, RA620630A white. The complete panel assembly with window, VOL/SQL knobs, distress cover and speaker is CS2597101 black or CS2597102 white.
Installation kitMMB-841,8,9,10,5,7,6—Flush-mount bracket kit for a console cut-out. The same kit fits the GX1300, GX1410 and GX2400; the GX1600/GX1700 need the MMB-97 instead.
Sun coverHC11001,8,9,5,4,6—Dust cover (white) to put over the radio when it is not in use; the same cover is listed for the GX1300 and GX1410, while the GX1600/GX1700 take the HC1600.
GNSS (GPS) antennaSCU-381,11,12—Passive external GPS antenna with 5 m of cable for the GX1400GPS (GX1400G) and GX1400GPS/E only: it screws onto the GPS ANT socket at the back and, once connected, is always used instead of the antenna behind the front panel. It does not work on the plain GX1400, which has no receiver.
GNSS (GPS) antennaSCU-311—GPS antenna with its own receiver and 15 m of cable, the way to give the GX1400 without GPS a position: cut off its 6-pin plug and connect brown to the radio’s yellow NMEA input, black to the green input and to battery minus, and red to battery plus through a 2 A fuse (not supplied).
External speakerMLS-3001,13,9—External loudspeaker named in the GX1400 manual, 4 Ω, 10 W, with 2 m of cable: its white wire goes to the radio’s white speaker lead, the shield to the shield. Yaesu UK lists it as MLS-300B.
External speakerMLS-410SP-B · MLS-410SP-W8,11,4—Newer fixed-mount VHF speaker, black or white, which Standard Horizon USA lists for the GX1400 and GX1400G and names in the GX1410 manual.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
DSC test callNo fixed interval. To check the set, make a radio check on a non-emergency channel with someone who knows you are testing, and send a DSC test call (DSC › TEST CALL) to another DSC station, which confirms it with an acknowledgement. Check under MMSI/POS INFO that your MMSI and a current position are shown1,8
Electrical connectionsAfter installation, and whenever other stations report weak transmission: have output power and the antenna’s standing wave ratio checked. Keep the power plug pins clean, check that the fuse sits tightly in its holder and that the radio sees about 13.8 V at its DC connector, never under 11 V while transmitting1,8
Fresh-water washWhen needed: wipe the case with a soft, dry cloth only, never with thinner, benzene or similar solvents1
Storage / winterisingBefore laying up or leaving the boat unused for a long time: switch the radio off and unplug the DC power cord1

From Standard Horizon’s GX1400 owner’s manual (EM065N202) and service manual EM065N90A. Standard Horizon sets no maintenance schedule for the radio: keep the supply between 11 and 16 V, never transmit without an antenna or dummy load, and use only approved accessories and parts. The set is aligned at the factory and should only be realigned by an authorised Standard Horizon service centre after a repair.

Good to know

  • The MMSI can be entered only once: you type it twice to confirm, and after that the radio only displays it. To change it, for example on a used set, ask Standard Horizon for a reset code (USA and Canada marinetech@yaesu.com, Europe service@yaesu.co.uk) with the model, serial number, current MMSI and the request code shown under SETUP › CONFIGURATION › RESET › USER MMSI; each pass code works only once, and Standard Horizon USA says it usually answers within about two business days. The ATIS code of the GX1400GPS/E is locked and reset the same way. The older GX1300 had to go back to factory service for a new MMSI.1,2,11,5
  • Check the model plate before you buy a GPS antenna. The GX1400GPS (US: GX1400G) and GX1400GPS/E have their GPS antenna behind the front panel: before cutting a flush-mount hole, power the radio up in that spot and make sure it gets a position, otherwise fit the passive SCU-38 to the GPS ANT socket. The plain GX1400 has no receiver: it needs a position over NMEA 0183 from a plotter or from the SCU-31 GPS antenna with its own receiver, and without one it beeps 10 minutes after switch-on and every 4 hours after that. The SCU-38 does not work on it.1,11,12
  • If the display goes dark or the radio restarts when you press PTT, the voltage at its DC connector is dropping below 11 V under the 5 A transmit load: run the power cable as directly to the battery as possible and use a thicker cable on long runs. Mind the polarity, as reversed wires blow the 6 A fuse or damage the radio, and note that HI BATTERY or LO BATTERY at switch-on means the supply is outside about 11–16.6 V.8,1
  • Wiring to a plotter over NMEA 0183: the radio’s yellow (+) and green (–) wires take the position in (RMC recommended), white (+) and brown (–) send the DSC and DSE sentences out, at 4800 baud or, if set in the GPS menu, 38400 baud (NMEA 0183-HS). If the plotter has a single NMEA ground, connect the green wire to it and leave brown open. Never let an NMEA wire touch +12 V. The GX1400 has no NMEA 2000 port; Standard Horizon’s fixed set with NMEA 2000 and AIS is the GX2400.1,7
  • Parts across the range: the power cord T9025406 and the black microphone hanger RA0458800 are the same on the GX1300, GX1400, GX1600/GX1700 and GX2400, and the successor GX1410 shares the GX1400’s knobs, bracket and bracket knobs. The GX1300 has its own knobs (RA601810C/RA601800C) and bracket (RA097840A/RA097830A), and the GX1700 takes the MMB-97 flush kit and HC1600 cover. The GX1400’s microphone is wired in, and Standard Horizon lists no second-station microphone for it; that needs a GX1700 (RAM3+ CMP31) or a GX2400 (RAM4 SSM-70H).1,5,6,7,4,3,8
  • Use a 50 Ω marine VHF antenna with a PL-259 plug, mounted at least 1 m from the radio and from people on board. Standard Horizon’s installation chapter calls for RG-8/U coax from 7.6 m of cable length and allows RG-58 below that. Keep the radio 1 m and the microphone 0.5 m from a magnetic compass. If other stations report a weak signal even on 25 W, have the antenna checked or try another antenna before suspecting the radio.1
