Victron BMV-700, BMV-702, BMV-712 Smart & SmartShunt
Victron’s BMV-700 series took over from the BMV-600S family in early 2014: the BMV-700 watches one battery bank, the BMV-702 adds an auxiliary input for a second battery’s voltage, the midpoint of a series bank or, with the optional sensor, battery temperature, and the BMV-712 Smart (in stock from September 2017) is a BMV-702 with Bluetooth built in and a bistable relay. All three share the same round head unit (52 mm body, 63 mm round or 69 × 69 mm square front), the same 500 A/50 mV shunt with its quick-connect board and the same 10 m RJ12 cable. The SmartShunt (March 2020 with 500, 1000 and 2000 A, 300 A since October 2024, each also as a water-resistant IP65 version) puts the BMV-712’s electronics onto the shunt itself and leaves out display, buzzer and relay: your phone or a GX device shows the readings. All of them talk VE.Direct and are still in Victron’s price list; the high-voltage BMV-700H and BMV-710H Smart are not covered here. When ordering, the label tells you what you have: BAM01… is a BMV-700/702, BAM03… a BMV-712 Smart, SHU050… a SmartShunt and SHU065… or the older SHU067… a SmartShunt IP65.

Wear parts & part numbers
| Part | OEM number | Also fits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature sensor | ASS0001000001,2,3,4 | — | Temperature sensor for BMV: for the BMV-702, BMV-712 Smart and SmartShunt with the auxiliary input set to Temperature, not for the BMV-700. Red wire to B1/Vbatt+, black wire to B2/Aux, lug on the battery positive; it then replaces the two fused red cables. The sensor of a MultiPlus or another Victron charger does not work here. |
| Data converter / gateway | ASS0305360111,5,3,6 | — | VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle: gives a BMV-700 or BMV-702 the VictronConnect app and VE.Smart networking. On a BMV-712 or SmartShunt it helps where the hull or seawater cuts the range of the built-in Bluetooth: switch the internal Bluetooth off; through the dongle there are no stored trends and no Keep SOC. |
| Data converter / gateway | ASS030530010 · ASS0305300301,7,3 | — | VE.Direct to USB interface (ASS030530030 with USB-C): links any of these monitors to the VictronConnect app on a computer (the Windows app has no Bluetooth) or to a USB port of a GX device. |
| Network cable | ASS030530203 · ASS030530209 · ASS030530218 · ASS030530230 · ASS030530250 · ASS0305303101,8,9,10 | — | VE.Direct cable to a GX device such as a Cerbo GX, straight plugs: 0.3 m, 0.9 m, 1.8 m, 3 m, 5 m and 10 m. Not included; the SmartShunt IP65 needs one too, on its fixed VE.Direct lead. |
| Network cable | ASS030531203 · ASS030531209 · ASS030531218 · ASS030531230 · ASS030531250 · ASS0305313201,8 | — | The same VE.Direct cable with one right-angle plug, for tight spots behind a panel: 0.3 m, 0.9 m, 1.8 m, 3 m, 5 m and 10 m. |
| Cable | ASS030066004 · ASS030066010 · ASS030066018 · ASS030066030 · ASS030066050 · ASS030066101 · ASS030066151 · ASS0300663011,11,3replaces ASS030066003replaces ASS030066009replaces ASS030066100replaces ASS030066150replaces ASS030066300 | — | RJ12 UTP cable between the BMV shunt and the head unit (a 10 m one is in the box): 0.3 m, 0.9 m, 1.8 m, 3 m, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m and 30 m, numbers as in the Q4 2026 price list. Victron’s product page already names successors for 1.8 m, 3 m and 5 m (ASS030066019, ASS030066031, ASS030066051), so a dealer may show either. Not used on the SmartShunt. |
| Shunt | SHU5000501001,12,3,13 | — | Bare 500 A/50 mV shunt with M10 terminals, the size every BMV comes with. Move the quick-connect board across from the old shunt; it is held by two screws, which must be tight. |
| Shunt | SHU102050200 · SHU202050200 · SHU6020502001,12,3 | — | Larger shunts for a BMV: 1000 A (2 × M10), 2000 A (3 × M10) and 6000 A (5 × M10), all 50 mV. Fit the quick-connect board, run the setup wizard, then set shunt current and shunt voltage; if it shows current with nothing switched on, do a zero current calibration. |
| Shunt circuit board | SPR0005314,15,13 | — | Shunt board (PCBA) on its own, for the shunt of a BMV-602S, BMV-700, BMV-702 or BMV-712 Smart. Not in Victron’s price list; two dealers sell it under this number for these models. Victron’s warranty does not cover water or corrosion damage on the board. |
| Wall-mount enclosure | ASS0505000001,16,3 | — | Wall-mount enclosure for a BMV head unit (or an MPPT Control) where it cannot go into a panel; 130 × 85 × 45 mm. |
| Wall-mount enclosure | ASS0506000001,3 | — | Wall-mount enclosure that holds a Color Control GX together with a BMV head unit or an MPPT Control; 245 × 135 × 65 mm. |
| Fuse | —3,17,13 | — | 1 A slow-blow fuse in each red measuring cable (B1/Vbatt+ and B2/Aux). Victron gives no part number for the fuse or the fused cable. If the display stays dark or the second input reads nothing, check this fuse, the cable and its terminals first. |

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Calibration | Synchronisation runs by itself at each full charge: 100 % is set once the voltage is above the charged voltage and the current below the tail current (default 4 % of capacity) for the detection time (default 3 min). Charge fully now and then so the state of charge cannot drift; synchronise by hand after installation or after the supply was cut (BMV: + and − together for 3 s; all models: in the app)3,17 |
| Software update | On a new installation, then whenever VictronConnect offers newer firmware; settings can only be changed with current firmware3,17 |
| Storage / winterising | Lithium bank left unattended: open the battery switch or pull the fuses, as even the monitor’s small standing current can damage a bank that has already shut down on low voltage3,17 |
From Victron’s BMV and SmartShunt manuals. Victron sets no fixed service intervals: synchronisation happens on its own at every full charge, everything else when needed.

Good to know
- Main switch off overnight? After a power cut the BMV-712 Smart and SmartShunt carry on from the last state of charge (Keep SOC, the default from firmware v4.12), while the BMV-700 and BMV-702 default to Clear and show no state of charge until the next full charge, unless you set Battery SOC on reset to 100 %. A Bluetooth dongle on a BMV-700/702 adds neither Keep SOC nor stored trends.3,21,26
- Only the battery belongs on the battery side of the shunt: the negatives of every load, charger, inverter and solar controller go to the load/system side, or their current is missing from the state of charge. If charging shows as negative, the two negative cables are swapped. A second battery must have its negative on the load side, or the auxiliary input reads nothing.3,17
- State of charge drifting or never reaching 100 %? Set the charged voltage just below the charger’s absorption voltage (14.2 V with 14.4 V absorption) and the tail current above the current at which the charger stops. For LiFePO4, Victron suggests 13.9 V charged voltage on 12 V, Peukert 1.01, charge efficiency 98 % and a discharge floor of 10–20 %; with solar, a longer detection time stops early synchronisation under passing clouds.3
- On a boat the built-in Bluetooth often reaches less than on paper: shunt, cables, metal and seawater around the hull cut the range to about 10–15 m or less, and only one phone can connect at a time. Victron’s fix is a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle (ASS030536011) placed where the signal is good, with the monitor’s own Bluetooth switched off. The Windows version of VictronConnect has no Bluetooth; use USB there.6,3
- The auxiliary input does one job at a time: starter battery, midpoint or temperature, never two, and the BMV-700 has no auxiliary input at all. For temperature, only the Temperature sensor for BMV (ASS000100000) works, not the sensor of a MultiPlus or charger; red wire to B1/Vbatt+, black wire to B2/Aux, lug on the positive of the whole bank, not on a midpoint.3,4,17
- Buying used: the product sticker with PIN and PUK should be there and legible, because the PUK is the only way to reset a forgotten Bluetooth PIN to 000000. Look for water or corrosion on shunt, board and head unit (Victron treats it as outside warranty), check that both screws holding the board are tight, and test the fuse in each red cable and the six wires of the RJ12 cable. A SmartShunt IP65 with a SHU067… number is the earlier version of today’s SHU065….3,17,13,19
