Victron Energy · Inverter/charger

Victron MultiPlus, MultiPlus Compact & MultiPlus-II

The MultiPlus is Victron Energy’s inverter/charger: a sine-wave inverter with a mains-frequency transformer, an adaptive battery charger and an automatic transfer switch in one case, so the boat’s 230 V circuits run on shore power or the generator and switch to the batteries in under 20 ms when that supply drops. Three lines are around: the classic MultiPlus (500 VA to 5 kVA at 12, 24 or 48 V, including the steel-cased 2 kVA), the MultiPlus Compact (800 to 2000 VA, 12 or 24 V, aluminium case, the small sizes with battery cables fitted at the factory) and, since 2018, the MultiPlus-II (3 to 15 kVA), whose GX versions add a built-in GX device with display, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. The model code reads battery voltage / inverter VA / charge current – transfer-switch current: a 12/3000/120-50 is a 12 V, 3000 VA unit with a 120 A charger and a 50 A transfer switch. All of them talk VE.Bus over RJ45 cables, so the temperature sensor, the MK3-USB interface, the Digital Multi Control panel and the network cables fit the whole range; what changes from model to model is the DC fuse, the battery cable size and the AC input breaker. Besides the 230 V units listed here, Victron builds 120 V versions with their own manuals.

Wear parts & part numbers

PartOEM numberAlso fitsNote
Temperature sensorASS0000010001,2,3,4,5—Battery temperature sensor for every MultiPlus, Compact and MultiPlus-II (it also fits GX devices). Supplied with the 12 and 24 V units, not with the 48 V MultiPlus-II and MultiPlus-II GX. Mount it on the battery minus pole. If charging drops to zero at absorption with a cool battery, unplug the sensor, switch the unit off, wait 4 seconds and on again: if it now charges normally, the sensor is faulty.
Data converter / gatewayASS030140000 · ASS0301400306,4,7,8—Interface MK3-USB (ASS030140000) or MK3-USB-C (ASS030140030), VE.Bus to USB: needed to change settings and update firmware on any MultiPlus with VictronConnect or VEConfigure; plugs into a VE.Bus socket with an RJ45 cable. VictronConnect does not work with the older MK2-USB.
Bluetooth dongleASS0305370109,4,7—VE.Bus Smart dongle: Bluetooth link to VictronConnect for every MultiPlus, Compact and MultiPlus-II — shows status and alarms, switches On, Off and Charger only and sets the shore current limit; it also measures battery voltage and temperature for the charger. It cannot change settings or update firmware: that needs the MK3-USB.
Remote controlDMC000200010R · REC02000501010,11,4,12—Digital Multi Control 200/200A GX (DMC000200010R, right-angle RJ45) or Digital Multi Control 200/200A (REC020005010): panel with On/Off/Charger-only switch and a knob for the shore or generator current limit (PowerControl/PowerAssist, up to 200 A), for every MultiPlus including parallel and three-phase systems; connects with an RJ45 cable. Only one remote — panel or switch — per system.

Lengths in order: 0.9 m, 1.8 m, 3 m, 5 m, 10 m (also 0.3, 15, 20 and 30 m). Victron has renumbered them; the older numbers in the same order are listed as replaced.
Network connector (T-piece, terminator)ASS03006551114,4,15,12replaces ASS030065510—RJ45 splitter (1× RJ45 male on a 15 cm cable, 2× RJ45 female): Victron’s part for parallel and three-phase systems of the MultiPlus 500–1600 VA. On the MultiPlus 3000 VA, by contrast, the manual forbids splitters and connection boxes — the cables run unit to unit.
CableASS03055012016,4—Inverting remote on-off cable: connects the remote on/off input of a MultiPlus to a VE.Bus BMS or to the load output of a BlueSolar MPPT, so the inverter switches off when the battery is empty; with a VE.Bus BMS a second cable can switch off the charger as well.
Battery management system (BMS)BMS30020020017,18replaces BMS300200000—VE.Bus BMS V2: protects Victron Lithium Battery Smart 12.8 V and 25.6 V in a system with a VE.Bus inverter/charger and switches inverter and charger via VE.Bus; the MultiPlus-II manual names it (or the Lynx Smart BMS) for these batteries.
Battery management system (BMS)BMS30020030019—VE.Bus BMS NG: the counterpart for Victron Lithium NG batteries with VE.Bus inverter/chargers, with Bluetooth built in. Not compatible with Lithium Battery Smart — check which battery series is on board.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Electrical connectionsOnce a year: check all connections — battery nuts (M8, 12 Nm), AC terminals and VE.Bus plugs. This is the only interval in the manuals of the MultiPlus 500–1600 VA, Compact, 3000/5000 VA, MultiPlus-II and MultiPlus-II GX; the 2 kVA manual names none18,26,12,23,15,27,28,24,5
Full serviceOngoing: keep the unit clean and dry, away from moisture, oil, soot and vapour, vents free. No user-serviceable parts inside; on the MultiPlus-II the internal fuses are not user-replaceable either18,5,12
Battery charging & storageLead-acid traction batteries only, when the battery maker asks for it: equalise for one hour at 1 V (12 V), 2 V (24 V) or 4 V (48 V) above absorption voltage, started from the front switch or the panel once the charger is in float; disconnect DC loads first18
Software updateOnly when needed: at commissioning, to fix a problem or for a feature the installation requires — Victron says stable systems should stay on their firmware. Every update resets all settings, Assistants and parallel or three-phase set-up to factory defaults, so save the configuration first29,30
Storage / winterisingBefore laying up or transporting: disconnect the mains supply and the battery leads; store dry at −20 to +60 °C (MultiPlus-II) or −40 to +70 °C (2 kVA)18,5

Victron gives no running hours or service schedule for the MultiPlus family. The manuals ask for one thing — check all connections once a year — and otherwise rely on a clean, dry, ventilated place; firmware is updated only when there is a reason.

Good to know

  • Before buying a used unit, find the seven-digit firmware number on the sticker on the control board. A number starting 26 or 27 means the newer microprocessor: it takes current 4xx firmware and, from version 415, can be fully set up with VictronConnect. A number starting 19 or 20 is the old microprocessor: VictronConnect can only read it, settings and updates then need VEConfigure and VEFlash.7,39,30
  • A firmware update returns the unit to factory settings, including Assistants and any parallel or three-phase configuration — save the settings first. In parallel and three-phase systems every unit must be the same model on the same firmware; the MultiPlus-II 8k, 10k and 15k can only run in parallel with an external transfer switch.29,39,12,2
  • The VE.Bus Smart dongle is enough for watching the unit and switching it from the phone, but not for changing settings or updating firmware: that takes an MK3-USB on a computer or an Android device with a USB port — not an iPhone or iPad.7,9
  • On board, the MultiPlus links neutral to earth itself when no shore power is present (ground relay), so the RCD on its output keeps working. Bond the case to the hull or grounding plate (MultiPlus-II: at least 4 mm²) and do not run the shore earth straight into the boat: Victron recommends an isolation transformer against galvanic corrosion.18,12,27
  • Mount it in a dry, ventilated compartment close to the batteries but never directly above them — battery gases corrode the electronics — and keep about 10 cm free around it. Heat costs power: a 3000 VA unit gives 2400 W continuous at 25 °C but only 1700 W at 65 °C.18,5,2
  • Fuse the battery cable as the manual says: the MultiPlus 2 kVA has no internal DC fuse at all, while on the small 500–1600 VA units and the Compacts a reversed battery connection can blow the internal fuse. A MultiPlus-II with a suspected blown internal fuse goes to an authorised service centre.5,35,15,28,18
