Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75/10–250/100

SmartSolar MPPT is Victron Energy’s range of maximum-power-point solar charge controllers with Bluetooth built in, on sale since 2017: the 250/100 and 250/85 came first in March, the 100/30, 100/50 and 150/35 followed in August. The name gives the limits — first the maximum PV open-circuit voltage (75, 100, 150 or 250 V), then the charge current (10 to 100 A); from 60 A there are versions with screw terminals (Tr) or MC4 plugs, and the VE.Can versions (70 to 100 A) add two RJ45 ports for networking. BlueSolar MPPT is the same family without Bluetooth: same housings, terminals, fuse ratings and accessories, and it gets app access through the VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle. The controllers need no routine maintenance and have no user-replaceable parts, not even the internal fuse, so what matters when buying parts is the exact article number (it decides which WireBox, display and cables fit) and wiring within the limits below. The 450 V SmartSolar MPPT RS and Victron’s PWM controllers are separate products and not covered here.

Data converter / gatewayASS0305360111,2,3,4—VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle: plugs into the VE.Direct port and gives the BlueSolar models (or a SmartSolar with Bluetooth switched off) VictronConnect access for set-up, readout and firmware updates. Limits: no synchronised charging over VE.Smart Networking, no stored trends, no Windows PC; cannot be used on a GX device.

Max. 10 m and no extensions; the MPPT Control comes without one.
Display / control panelSCC9005000009,8,3—MPPT Control: separate 65 × 65 mm display for every SmartSolar and BlueSolar MPPT, connected with a VE.Direct cable (bought separately); live data, 30-day history and settings. For the 60 A and larger units Victron suggests the plug-in SmartSolar Control display instead.
Display / control panelSCC90065001010,11,3,12—SmartSolar Control display (‘SmartSolar Pluggable Display’ in the price list): plugs into the ‘display option’ slot on the front of the SmartSolar 150/45 up to 250/100 in the large housing and of the SmartSolar and BlueSolar VE.Can models; held by the two screws of the slot cover, can be plugged in and out while running.
Temperature sensorSBS05015020013,14,3,12,15—Smart Battery Sense long range (up to 10 m): wireless battery voltage and temperature sensor on the battery terminals (M10 eyelets, inline T1A fuse); sends both to the charger over VE.Smart Networking for temperature-compensated charging and cable-loss compensation. Works with SmartSolar, and with BlueSolar once the Bluetooth dongle is fitted. Not needed with a BMV-712 or SmartShunt that has a temperature sensor, and not allowed where a GX device already controls charging.
CableASS03055032016,3,4,17—VE.Direct non-inverting remote on/off cable: a remote on/off input for the models without H/L terminals (75/10 to 150/45), e.g. for the charge-disconnect signal of a lithium BMS; it takes up the VE.Direct port. Victron’s overview datasheet still prints the older number ASS030550310.
CableASS03055050018,3,4,19—VE.Direct TX digital output cable: turns the VE.Direct port into a virtual load output (to switch a BatteryProtect or a solid-state relay for loads bigger than the built-in output) or a streetlight dimming signal.

Solar connector (MC4)SCA520300000 · SCA5205000003,24,12,6—Victron MC4 parts for the MC4 models: SCA520300000 connector pair (1 male, 1 female), SCA520500000 MC4-Y splitter pair (1× M-2F, 1× F-2M) to parallel strings. The two (60/70 A) or three (85/100 A) MC4 pairs on the charger are parallel on one tracker, each good for 30 A at most; badly crimped or low-quality MC4 plugs are a common cause of burned connectors, which the warranty does not cover.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Software updateAt commissioning and whenever VictronConnect offers an update: check the firmware (product info: ‘This is the latest version’) and update over Bluetooth, the VE.Direct to USB interface or, with a GX device, remotely through VRM; an interrupted update can simply be repeated6,4
Electrical connectionsWhenever the battery charges poorly or the charger shows a different voltage than a meter at the battery: check every connection for tightness (0.75 / 1.6 / 2.4 Nm by model), the crimps, the fuses and breakers; look for burned or melted terminals, water and corrosion in the connection area6,19,12
BatteryFlooded lead-acid only, and only if the battery maker asks for it: automatic equalisation every 1 to 250 days (off by default; current limited to 8 % of bulk current, max. 1 h by default). Never equalise gel, AGM, VRLA or lithium batteries12

Victron’s manuals say these controllers need no regular maintenance and have no user-serviceable parts. The rows above are what the SmartSolar and BlueSolar manuals tie to commissioning, to a fault or to the battery type — not a timetable.

Good to know

  • Size the string by its open-circuit voltage on the coldest morning, not by the panel’s nominal voltage: Voc rises in the cold, so Victron advises a 10 % margin below the controller’s rating (150 V models run only up to 145 V, 250 V models up to 245 V) and offers an MPPT sizing calculator. Above the limit the charger stops with error #33, and overvoltage damage is not covered by the warranty. Never use panels with optimisers — Victron warns they can destroy the controller.6,12,37,43
  • Connect the battery first and wait 10 seconds so the controller can detect the system voltage, then the loads (small models), then the PV. Detection happens only at the very first power-up — a unit first powered from the panels alone stores 12 V — so check the voltage it found in the app. Reversed battery polarity is not protected: it can blow the internal fuse, which sits in a non-serviceable area and cannot be replaced, so the unit is then a write-off — and not a warranty case. Fit the battery fuse from the table even so.19,12,6
  • Most burned terminals come from the wiring: use fine-stranded class 5 copper (strands no thicker than 0.4 mm), never solid-core cable or soldered ends, do not push the insulation into the clamp, and torque to 0.75, 1.6 or 2.4 Nm depending on size. On MC4 models keep below 30 A per connector pair and use good, properly crimped MC4 plugs. Burned or melted connections are not covered by the warranty.12,6
  • On a boat, find a dry, ventilated spot: the enclosure is only IP43/IP22, rated for indoor use and never for a wet place, and full output is only available up to 40 °C, so a hot engine room costs charge current. Mount vertically with terminals down and 10 cm clear above and below, within 3 m of the battery but not above it; if charger and battery differ by more than 5 °C, add a Smart Battery Sense for correct temperature compensation.12,23,36
  • Check the article number on the type plate before buying a WireBox, display or replacement unit. The SmartSolar 150/45 came in two housings: early SCC115045210 (Tr) and SCC115045310 (MC4) in the large 60/70 A case with the display slot, today SCC115045212 in the 130 mm case of the 150/35 — so WireBox L and the SmartSolar Control display fit the old one, WireBox M the new one. Several large models were renumbered (e.g. 250/60-MC4 SCC125060310 → SCC125060320 → SCC125060321); the old VE.Direct-only 250/85-MC4 SCC125085310 is replaced by the VE.Can version SCC125085511.12,27,3,11,28
  • A BlueSolar does not need replacing to get app access: the VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle ASS030536011 adds VictronConnect, firmware updates and — according to the current BlueSolar manuals — a VE.Smart network with a Smart Battery Sense or a BMV-712 (Victron’s older overview sheet still names SmartSolar only). What the dongle cannot do is synchronised charging of several chargers or stored trends; for that the controller needs Bluetooth built in or VE.Can. If a GX device already controls charging, leave the Smart Battery Sense out.2,15,4,14
