Origo alcohol stoves

Origo stoves burn denatured alcohol without pressure: each burner sits over a removable stainless-steel canister filled with non-flammable wool that soaks up to 1.2 l of spirit, so there is no pump, valve or fuel line to leak. The range covers the one-burner 1500, the two-burner 3000 (both fixed or gimballed), the 6000 with two burners and an oven, the oven-only 6100 and 6200, and the Heat Pal 5100, a cabin heater that also takes a pot. Developed in Sweden by Origo and later sold under the Electrolux and Dometic names, they are still common on cruising yachts. Dometic marked the 6000, the 5100 and the canisters “no longer in production” from July 2019 and the 1500 and 3000 from 2020; exact end dates were never published.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Storage / winterisingWhenever the stove will stand unused for a long time: let it cool, lift the stovetop and lay a rubber gasket over each canister opening so the spirit does not evaporate; take the gaskets off before lighting1
Full serviceNone scheduled: the canisters have no valve, fuel line or other part that needs regular service. Clean the stovetop, grate and (6000) oven whenever grease builds up, without sharp or hard tools1,4

From Dometic’s operating manuals for the Origo 1500–6200 (4445101909) and the Heat Pal 5100 (4445101911), both revision 01/2020. Neither gives a service interval; refilling is covered under “Good to know”.

Good to know

  • Burn only denatured alcohol (methylated spirits). The Origo manual rules out methanol, petrol and lighter fluid, even though CleanCook’s newer stoves are rated for methanol. Spirit with water in it burns weakly; CleanCook asks for less than 10 % water in its canisters.1,13
  • Refill only a cold canister, with the knob at 0 and the canister lifted out — never through the burner opening. Pour through the mesh until spirit shows at the bottom of the opening, hold the canister upright for about 20 seconds so any excess runs off, and wipe up every spill: an alcohol flame is almost invisible in daylight. On a gimballed 1500 or 3000 the stovetop has to swing fully upright before the canisters come out, so allow for that when you build it in.1
  • If a burner that is still warm lights and goes straight out, blow into the burner opening to clear the vapour, then light it again with a long match or lighter. To put it out, turn to 0, wait about five seconds, turn briefly to 4 to check the flame is really out, and back to 0.1
  • Dometic publishes no part numbers for the oven door seal, the burner regulator plates, the grate or the wick (the non-flammable wool inside the canister, which is not sold on its own), so these only come from parts stoves. The 6000 oven has a thermometer, not a thermostat: you set the heat with the oven burner’s knob.1
  • New Origo parts have been scarce since Dometic stopped production around 2019–2020; canisters, pot holders and gimbals mostly turn up second-hand, so a parts stove is worth keeping. CleanCook Sweden, the Dometic offshoot that kept the canister technology, sells a 1.2 l canister it describes as a universal fit for older Origo, Dometic and Electrolux stoves, without a part number; measure yours first (about 220 mm across). The Heat Pal 5100 takes a different canister.2,19,13,20
  • Ventilate the cabin whenever the Heat Pal or the stove is burning — the manuals warn of asphyxiation — and never heat the cabin with the cooking stove: only the 5100 is built as a heater. Keep a fire extinguisher suitable for alcohol fires within reach and have it checked regularly by a qualified person.1,4
