B&G Vulcan

The Vulcan is B&G’s entry-level touchscreen sailing chartplotter, below the Zeus, with built-in 10 Hz GPS, Wi-Fi, NMEA 2000, sonar and B&G’s sailing software (SailSteer, laylines, SailingTime, start line and autopilot control). It came in three generations: the original Vulcan 7 of 2015 with a blue 7-pin sonar socket, no ForwardScan and software ending at 4.5; the 2016 FS models, Vulcan 5 and Vulcan 7 FS, with a 9-pin sonar socket and ForwardScan but no radar port, ending at 18.3; and the radar-ready Vulcan 9 (2016), Vulcan 7R and Vulcan 12R (2017) with a yellow Ethernet socket, running 22.3. The radar models are B&G versions of Simrad’s GO7 XSR, GO9 XSE and GO12 XSE and share bezels, dash kits and brackets with them, while the sun covers carry B&G’s own numbers. B&G now sells the 7R simply as Vulcan 7 and the 12R as Vulcan 12; the 7R and the 9 are still current, the 12 is discontinued.

Good to know

  • Buying a used Vulcan 7, check which one it is. The original 2015 unit has a blue 7-pin sonar socket, no ForwardScan and stops at software 4.5. The Vulcan 7 FS has a black 9-pin sonar socket, a bezel about 25 mm thick and no radar port, and stops at 18.3. The Vulcan 7R has a thin 8 mm bezel and a yellow Ethernet socket and runs 22.3. The first two share one housing, while the 7R has its own sun cover, bezel and dash kit, so check the number before you order.47,11,1
  • Updating: the Vulcan 7R and the Vulcan 12/12R use the same “Vulcan_R” update file, the Vulcan 9 has its own. Back up waypoints and settings first, then let the unit update itself over Wi-Fi or copy the file to a memory card that holds no charts, and never switch off mid-update.45,55,56,57
  • 12 V only, through the supplied 3 A fuse. The yellow wire decides how the unit starts: left insulated, the power key works normally; joined to red after the fuse, the unit starts with the power and the key only puts it in standby; on the ignition switch’s accessory terminal it starts with the engine. A siren on the blue alarm wire that draws more than 1 A needs a relay; the Vulcan 5 has no alarm output.30
  • This page lists no fishfinder transducer: B&G names no CHIRP or DownScan transducer for the Vulcan, and the pages of the TotalScan, Active Imaging and xSonic transducers do not name it either; the 2016 and 2017 manuals only say that TotalScan and StructureScan transducers work. Match the plug: blue 7-pin on the original Vulcan 7, 9-pin on every later model, where an older 7-pin transducer fits through adapter 000-13313-001 but loses its paddle-wheel speed. For boat speed in SailSteer and the laylines, an NMEA 2000 sensor such as the DST810 is the usual route.11,1,30,40
  • ForwardScan needs a 2 in (50.8 mm) thru-hull. The stainless sleeve has a self-closing valve, so you can swap the transducer for the blanking plug afloat; spare O-rings come as kit 000-12232-001. The original Vulcan 7 has no ForwardScan.32,39
  • Before cutting the dash: steel, aluminium or carbon around the unit weakens the internal GPS and Wi-Fi, so test reception at the spot first, and a panel-mounted unit needs ventilation behind it. Only the 12 in unit can share its sonar and charts with other displays over Ethernet.30
