Lofrans Kobra
The Kobra is a horizontal anchor windlass from Lofrans (Italy, since 1966): an anodised aluminium body on deck with the chain gypsy on one side and an independently operated rope drum on the other, a 1000 W DC motor in 12 V or 24 V beside them and a worm gearbox in an oil bath, with manual chain release and manual override. Lofrans’ manual rates it for boats of 35–45 ft in heavy use or 45–50 ft in light use, and older Kobras were also built with a 700 W motor. In Lofrans’ horizontal range the Cayman starts smaller (700 W, also 1000 and 1300 W), while the Tigres (own page) and the 1700–2200 W Falkon are larger; the Kobra shares its gypsies with the Cayman, Royal and Tigres, and maintenance kit 72048 and the main shaft with the Cayman. Its installation and user’s manual also covers the smaller Dorado, whose motors are listed below, and the Razza; unless a row names the Dorado, the numbers on this page are for the Kobra.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Grease | Rinse all outer surfaces and hidden spots with fresh water and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge to remove the salt, then grease the moving parts, above all the main-shaft threads and the clutch cones, and check for corrosion and mechanical stress: every 3 months if the boat is used more than 6 months a year or chartered, every 6 months for 2–6 months’ use, once a year for under 2 months’ use10,12 |
| Clutch | When greasing (step B) or changing chain size: unscrew the wing nut anticlockwise with the handle, slide the upper cone, gypsy and lower cone off the shaft, wash them with running water (never a pressure washer), check for corrosion and mechanical damage and grease the threads and all moving parts on reassembly10,18 |
| Electrical connections | Every 12 months: check the motor terminals and measure the voltage drop at the terminals10,18 |
| Gaskets | Replace all gaskets (the seals are in maintenance kit 72048): every 24 months with 2–6 or more than 6 months’ use a year, every 12 months on charter boats, every 36 months with under 2 months’ use10,12,1 |
| Full service | Every 36 months (every 24 months on charter boats): take the windlass off the deck, clean the salt from under the base, check for corrosion and seal it again10,19 |
From the maintenance programme (section 6.1) in Lofrans’ installation and user’s manual for the Dorado, Kobra and Razza. Lofrans gives calendar intervals by months of use per year, not operating hours, and the warranty lapses if the programme is not followed. Disconnect the power before any maintenance.

Good to know
- To change chain size, change the gypsy, the outer cone and the chain stripper together: the 6–8 mm and 5/16 in gypsies (types a–d) run with outer cone 631842 and stripper 635271, the 10 mm and 3/8 in gypsies (types e–h) with 631846 and 635272. The gypsies are the same as on the Cayman, Royal and Tigres; Lofrans’ 7 mm gypsy is cut for ISO 4565 chain, not for 7 mm DIN 766.12,2,4
- Before buying a motor, check flange shape, shaft diameter and number of terminals against Lofrans’ FAQ table: the Kobra product page lists the 2-terminal motors 633512/633513, while the FAQ also names the Kobra for the 3-terminal B14 motor 633523 and the older 700 W motor 633510. If the number of terminals changes, the control box has to change too.5,2
- Leave at least 300 mm between the underside of the deck and the top of the heaped chain, and keep the chain’s angle at the bow roller under 90°. A shallow chain locker is the usual cause of frequent jams; the other causes in Lofrans’ troubleshooting table are a gypsy that does not match the chain and chain out of tolerance.10,12
- At anchor, never let the windlass hold the boat: wind, current and waves put very high loads on the chain, so always use a chain stopper. If the windlass blocks, slips or goes into self-protection while hauling, find the cause first; one that turns slowly usually has undersized cables, poor connections, dirty brushes or water in the motor.10,18
- On an aluminium boat, fit a non-conductive gasket (not supplied) between windlass and deck and insulate anchor, chain, chain locker and fixings from the hull as well; otherwise electrolysis will corrode the windlass quickly.10,12
