Yanmar 2QM15

The 2QM15 is Yanmar’s two-cylinder marine diesel of about 15 hp from the late 1970s — built from about 1977 to 1980 according to the Yanmar dealer Torresen Marine — and was fitted mainly as the auxiliary in smaller cruising yachts. It is cooled directly with seawater, carries Yanmar’s own reverse gear on the back (the 2QM15G has different gearing) and has a decompression lever on each cylinder; the GM series replaced the QM engines around 1980. Yanmar no longer publishes manuals or parts catalogues for the QM series and refers owners to its dealers; the numbers on this page come from Yanmar’s parts catalogue Y00R0918, which the Yanmar specialist Léon Marine offers as a PDF and Torresen kept online, and current numbers from dealer listings. The 2QM20 is a different engine with the larger parts of the 3QM30 and is covered on the 3QM30 page.

Service intervals

Yanmar has not put the QM-series operation manual online and we found no dealer copy either; Yanmar supplies manuals for engines it no longer sells only through its dealers, so this page lists no service intervals. As a guide to what wears, Yanmar’s spare parts kit for the 2QM15 holds the impeller, thermostat, oil and fuel filter, both V-belts, two zincs, two injector nozzles, the head and exhaust gaskets and piston rings.

Good to know

Do not order 2QM15 parts by 2QM20 numbers: the 2QM15 takes the small 40 mm GM-type impeller (104211-42071) and the small GM/YM spin-on oil filter (119305-35170), the 2QM20 the larger parts of the 3QM30. Some shops list the larger QM oil filter (equivalent to 124085-35170) for the 2QM15 too, while Yanmar’s catalogue gives the small one, so compare with the filter on your engine.^14,4,6,51
The 2QM15 takes its own thermostat, 124770-49200, which Torresen’s catalogue lists as the thermostat for the 2QM15 engine. The common Yanmar thermostat 105582-49200 is sold for GM engines, not for the 2QM15.^30,31
The engine runs two V-belts, one for the seawater pump (HM-23) and one for the generator (HM-31). Carry a spare of each.^26,1,6
Because seawater flows straight through the block, the two pencil zincs do real work: check them at every oil change and renew them together with their seal rings.²⁸
Note the engine number from the information plate before ordering: the catalogue changes several parts at given engine numbers, for example the alternator from no. 89088 and the temperature sender from no. 87678, and the 2QM15G has a reverse gear with different gearing.^6,50
The fuel filter element, its O-ring and the zincs are the same as on GM-series Yanmars, and the air filter element is shared with the 3HM, so any Yanmar dealer has them. For engine-specific parts and the operation manual, which Yanmar supplies for engines it no longer sells only through its dealer network, go to a Yanmar dealer with the engine number.^{20,21,23,34,50}
