Bali 4.3

The Bali 4.3, at first sold as the Bali 4.3 Loft, is a 43-foot (13.1–13.2 m) cruising catamaran with a flybridge helm from Bali Catamarans (Catana Group), presented at the Paris boat show in December 2014, built from 2015 and replaced by the Bali 4.4, which Bali announced in April 2021. The concept is by Olivier Poncin and the naval architecture by Xavier Faÿ; the interior was first drawn by Hervé Couëdel and from late 2016 by Lasta Design Studio. Saloon and aft cockpit form one open space behind a large glazed aft door that lifts up under the hardtop, the galley faces a retractable forward window, and a solid foredeck with a forward cockpit replaces the trampolines. It came with 3 cabins (owner’s suite in the port hull) or 4 cabins and 2 to 4 bathrooms. The engines changed over the years: Cruising World names 40 hp Nanni diesels for the first boats, with 50 hp as an option (Sail’s test boat had Kubota-based engines), while Bali’s spec sheets of 2018/19 list 2 × 40 hp Yanmar with 57 hp as an option, all with saildrives, and Volvo Penta was offered too. Bali publishes no owner’s manual, so this page links the builder’s archived spec sheets, brochures and model pages; do not confuse the boat with the Bali 4.3 MY power catamaran or with the new Bali 4.3 that Bali presented in September 2026.

Equipment & its manuals

Standard equipment as the builder’s documents list it. Boats were ordered with options and refitted since — check what is actually aboard.

ItemModelManual / pageNote
EngineNanni 40 hp × 21,2,3First boats (2015/16): Cruising World’s Boat of the Year report of 2016 names 40 hp Nanni diesels as standard and 50 hp as an option, and Sail’s test boat at Annapolis in autumn 2015 had twin Kubota diesels; an older English block left in the A-2019 sheet lists Nanni engines of 2 × 40 hp, 50 hp with the pack and 60 hp as an option—Bali names no engine model. Nanni marinises Kubota blocks, and its four-cylinder saildrive diesels close to these ratings are the N4.38 (37.5 hp) and N4.50 (47.5 hp) on our N3/N4 page; that is our inference, so read the plate before ordering filters, impellers or belts. Sail praises the access: the saildrives sit at the forward end of the engines and you can step down into the engine room.
EngineYanmar 40 hp × 23,4,5,6,7Standard on the spec sheets A-2019 (August 2018) and B-2019 (January 2019); the November 2018 brochure and the model pages of 2019 to 2021 give 2 × 40 hp up to 2 × 60 hp without a make—Bali names only the make and the rating. Yanmar’s three-cylinder saildrive engines of that power are the 3JH5E (39 hp) and, from 2018, the 3JH40, both on our 3JH5E/3JH40 page; read the plate to be sure. Mechanical (cable) engine controls with panels and alarms at the helm; both engine rooms are closed off from the accommodation.
EngineYanmar 57 hp × 23,4Option on the spec sheets A-2019 and B-2019—Yanmar’s 57 hp saildrive engine of those years is the four-cylinder common-rail 4JH57 (see our 4JH45/4JH57 page); Bali does not name it, so check the plate.
EngineVolvo Penta D2 × 23,8Option (‘optional Volvo engine’) in the older English block of the A-2019 sheet; a US surveyor reports four-cylinder Volvo Penta D2 diesels with Volvo saildrives on the Bali 4.3 he inspected (SpinSheet, February 2022)—Neither source gives the exact type or power; Volvo Penta’s four-cylinder D2 sailboat engines are the D2-40 and the D2-50, D2-60 and D2-75 on our pages. Read the plate.
Saildrive—3,4,8All boats: one saildrive per engine; Bali names neither make nor type—Behind a Yanmar JH engine it will normally be a Yanmar SD50 or SD60 (see our SD50/SD60 page), behind Volvo Penta engines a Volvo saildrive, as the SpinSheet survey found; read the plate on the leg before ordering seals, anodes or a propeller.
Propeller2-blade fixed × 23,4All boats: fixed two-blade propellers; three-blade folding propellers as an option in the older English block of the A-2019 sheet—Make not named.
Fuel filter—3,4All boats: one fuel filter with water separator per engine—Make not named. Two 400 l fuel tanks (800 l in all, depending on the pack) with gauges at the chart table.
Winches1 + 1 (+ 2)3,4,2All boats: one electric winch (with the pack) for the main halyard and the solent furling line and one winch for the mainsheet traveller, reefing lines and solent sheet (electric as an option); two more winches for gennaker, code 0 or spinnaker sheets as an option—Make not named. The first reef can be automatic (with the pack). Sail found the jib-sheet winches of its early test boat badly installed.
Windlass1000 W3,4With the pack: electric windlass with a corded remote control; stainless anchor roller under the nacelle—Make not named. A GRP hatch gives access to the windlass locker.
SteeringØ 900 mm3,4,2,8All boats: one composite wheel at the flybridge helm with a swivelling helm seat; two balanced spade rudders on stainless stocks, cable steering with a rigid link bar between the rudders; emergency tiller through a stainless cap in each transom—Sail’s early test boat had springy steering that bound up under load, which Sail put down to the installation; a surveyor found notable wear in the steering linkage of a three-year-old boat and advises checking it every year.
Mast & rigging—3,4,2All boats: anodised aluminium mast and boom, 18.35 m air draft; stainless standing rigging with 2 cap shrouds and 2 lowers, solent forestay with furler (with the pack), ball-bearing mainsail luff cars, self-supporting bowsprit; LED anchor, steaming and deck lights—Makes not named. According to Sail the mast stands at about 40 % of the length, which leaves room for the large self-tacking solent.
Sails52 m² + 37.5 m²3,4,5,9,10Spec sheets 2018/19 and November 2018 brochure: full-batten Dacron mainsail with 3 reefs and self-tacking cross-cut Dacron solent on a furler; options: 54 m² square-top mainsail, reinforced main and solent with UV strip, lazy bag and lazy jacks, Hydranet sails, 61 m² code 0 (65 m² in the brochure), 102 m² asymmetric spinnaker. The November 2016 brochure and the French page of January 2015 give the mainsail as 54.6 m²—Sailmaker not named.
AutopilotRaymarine3,4Option: Raymarine autopilot control at the helm (spec sheets A-2019 and B-2019)—Type not named.
ChartplotterRaymarine3,4Option: Raymarine colour chartplotter display at the helm—Type not named.
VHFRaymarine3,4Option: Raymarine VHF and one multifunction display at the chart table—Types not named.
Digital switching—11,12,3,4Bali’s web pages of 2015 to 2018: a multiplexed touch-screen panel with built-in user guide and tutorial controls the systems; the English part of the A-2019 and B-2019 sheets still lists it at the chart table, the French text does not—Make not named.
Fridge150 l · 615 l3,4,9,11Spec sheets 2018/19: a 150 l fridge and, with the pack, an American-style 615 l fridge-freezer (402 l + 213 l) with ice maker, chilled-water dispenser and its own inverter; 620 l in the November 2016 brochure—Make not named.
Stove—3,4All boats: 3-burner gas hob and gas oven; gas locker under a cockpit seat for 13 kg bottles; a 6-place dishwasher as an option—Make not named.
Toilet—3,4All boats: a marine toilet in each bathroom (2 to 4 depending on the layout); the English text of the sheets calls the one in the owner’s bathroom electric—Make and type not named. Holding tanks of 2 × 60 l (A-2019 sheet, web pages) or 2 × 55 l (B-2019 sheet), emptied by gravity at sea or through a deck fitting.
Water pump—3,4All boats: pressurised fresh-water pump with expansion tank; two 400 l water tanks with gauges (800 l in all, depending on the pack); hot and cold shower in the port transom with the pack—Make not named.
Water heater50 l3,4All boats: electric water heater, also heated through the engine cooling circuit—Make not named.
Grey-water tank2 × 150 l3,4Option: two grey-water tanks with discharge pump—
Bilge pump4 + 23,4All boats: 4 electric and 2 manual bilge pumps—Make not named.
Batteries2 + 3 (+ 2) × 130 Ah3,4,11,1Spec sheets 2018/19: 2 gel engine batteries with battery switch and manual emergency parallel, 3 house batteries of 130 Ah and 2 more with the pack, with a low-charge alarm at the chart table; Bali’s pages of 2015 to 2018 speak of a 720 Ah bank, and Cruising World counts five house and two starter batteries—
Alternators2 × 12 V / 125 A3,4,1Option: two additional alternators; Cruising World’s test boat of 2015 had the standard 50 A alternator plus a 120 A add-on—
Charger12 V · 2000 VA / 70 A3,4With the pack: inverter-charger—Make not named.
Shore power220 V · 25 m3,4All boats: 220 V / 50 Hz circuit with shore socket and a 25 m cable; sockets in each cabin, the galley and the saloon and 12 V sockets at the chart table and in each cabin with the pack—
Solar panels4 × 100 W3,4,1With the pack: four 100 W solar panels set into the hardtop—Make not named.
Generator4 · 7.5 · 11 kW1,2,8Option: a choice of 4, 7.5 or 11 kW generators (Cruising World, 2016); Sail’s test boat had its generator on a shelf in the starboard hull—Bali’s spec sheets do not list a generator. The boat in the SpinSheet survey had a Northern Lights unit; read the plate.
WatermakerAquabase 200 l/h3,2With the pack: engine-driven watermaker, listed only in the older English block of the A-2019 sheet; Sail’s test boat was due to get a large watermaker in the port hull—Not in the French text of the 2018/19 sheets; check what the boat actually has.
Doors—11,9,5,1,3,4,2All boats: large tilting glazed aft door in methacrylate with an access door, raised under the hardtop. Bali’s pages of 2015 to 2018 and the brochures of 2016 and 2018 describe it as electrically operated, Cruising World counts a pair of motors for the door and the drop-down transom platform, and the 2018/19 spec sheets list assisted lifting with the pack (by pneumatic struts in the English text). Forward: a 1.20 × 0.70 m sliding window to the forward cockpit, fully retractable with the pack, and sliding side windows (pack)—Make not named. Sail found that the forward window lowers on pneumatic lifts.
Swim platform—3,4,1With the pack: tilting platform between the transoms that extends the cockpit (for Cruising World a motor-driven drop-down transom); folding swim ladder on the port transom—Behind the aft bench a fixed platform joins the two transoms.
Davits—3,4,8With the pack: dinghy davits—Make not named. A surveyor noted crude welding on the davit hardware of one boat, possibly an aftermarket repair; look closely at a survey.
Hatches & ports—3,4,13All boats: 2 flush hatches (T60) over the forepeaks, GRP hatches over the engine rooms and the forward-cockpit lockers (on gas struts with the pack), 1 over the windlass locker and 2 escape hatches under the cabin stairs; 2 extra portholes per hull in the 3-cabin version with the pack—Make not named; see the tip on the Goiot escape-hatch recall.

Good to know

  • Check which engines the boat has before ordering parts: the first boats of 2015/16 had 40 or 50 hp Nanni diesels on Kubota blocks, Bali’s spec sheets of 2018/19 list 40 hp Yanmars with 57 hp as an option, Volvo Penta was offered as well, and a surveyor found Volvo Penta D2s with Volvo saildrives on one boat. Bali never names the engine type, so read the plates on the engines and on the saildrive legs; filters, impellers, belts and saildrive seals differ between all of them.1,2,3,4,8
  • Three boats share the name. This page covers the sailing Bali 4.3 built from 2015 to 2021. The Bali 4.3 MY is the motor version with shaft-driven Yanmar diesels, and in September 2026 Bali presented a new Bali 4.3, a different design with a beam of 24′4″ (about 7.4 m against 7.12 m) and a 48 V lithium system. Listings often just say ‘Bali 4.3’, so check the build year and the hull identification number before buying parts.18,25,26,4
  • At a survey, run the tilting aft door and the tilting transom platform through their full travel. Bali’s pages and brochures describe the door as electrically operated and Cruising World counts a pair of motors for door and platform, while the 2018/19 spec sheets list assisted lifting with the pack; a surveyor found the door of a three-year-old boat working like new but wanted to see it again after five more years. With the pack the forward galley window lowers fully as well.11,5,1,3,8
  • Check the steering: Sail’s early test boat had springy steering that bound up under load, which Sail blamed on the installation, and a surveyor found notable wear in the steering linkage of a three-year-old Bali 4.3 and recommends checking it every year. The cable steering has a rigid link bar between the two rudders, and the emergency tiller fits through a stainless cap in each transom.2,8,3,4
  • In February 2020 Bali, Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot and Nautitech asked owners to contact them about a Goiot recall: escape hatches delivered before September 2018 could come away from their frames. The Bali 4.3 has two escape hatches under the cabin stairs, and the boats of 2015 to 2018 fall within that period, so ask Bali or a dealer, with the hull number, whether the boat is affected and whether the fix was done.13,3
  • Bali puts no owner’s manual online: owner documents sit in a members’ area behind a login on Bali’s website, so ask the previous owner, Bali or a dealer with the hull number. Bali’s own figures also changed between documents: 13.10 or 13.20 m overall, 10.2 to 11.3 t light and 14.25 to 17 t maximum displacement, holding tanks of 2 × 55 or 2 × 60 l, a mainsail of 52 or 54.6 m². For a berth, a lift or insurance, use the boat’s own CE documents rather than a brochure.27,3,4,10,7,9
