Moody 376
The Moody 376 is an 11.53 m (37 ft 10 in) centre-cockpit cruising yacht designed by Bill Dixon of Angus Primrose Ltd and built by Marine Projects (Plymouth) Ltd for A. H. Moody & Son; Moody’s own archive dates it from 1987 to August 1991 and counts 313 boats together with its predecessor, the Moody 37 of 1985. The builder describes it as the Moody 37 with a bathing and boarding platform added: the same hull, rig and layout, with a V-berth forecabin, a U-shaped galley, two heads and an aft owner’s cabin. It came with a fin keel (1.68 m draft), a Scheel keel (1.37 m) or a lifting keel (1.22 m). The standard engine was a 35 hp Thornycroft T80 driving a shaft through a Hurth gearbox, but the yard’s lists and build register also show Thornycroft T98, T108 and T110, Perkins 4.108 and Prima M50 and the Volvo Penta 2003T, each with its own propeller, so read the engine plate before ordering parts. The brochure, owner’s-manual pages and the yard’s drawings survive in the Princess Records of the Moody Owners Association.

Good to know
- The Moody name has belonged to HanseYachts since 2007; the builder’s records for the 376 are online for everyone in the Princess Records of the Moody Owners Association: the 376 brochure and 1988 specification, owner’s-manual pages, the yard’s boat lists, build register and drawings. Full members (£28 a year) and temporary members, meant for buyers, also get the Information Exchange forum and the technical library.16,17,18,19,14
- Check which engine is fitted before ordering a propeller, raw-water strainer or exhaust parts: for the standard Thornycroft T80 the yard specified a 16 × 11 in two-blade right-hand propeller and a ¾ in strainer, for the T98 17 × 11 in and a 1 in strainer, and other sizes for the Perkins Prima M50 and the Volvo Penta 2003T, whose propeller is left-hand in one yard list and right-hand in another.3,5
- Marine Projects wrote keel removal and refit instructions for the 376: support the keel, chip the topcoat off the nuts, remove nuts and top plates, cut the sealant and drive in hardwood wedges; to refit, prime with Rallibondite 2102, spread Rubboseal bedding 4 mm thick, put caulking cotton round each stud and torque the 24 mm nuts (36 mm socket) in the numbered pattern at once, after 24 hours and after 48 hours. The torque figures are on the tightening plan in Part 3; do not work below 5 °C.3,4
- For a replacement fuel tank, the yard drawing of the 376 tank gives what a tank maker needs: 29½ × 13¼ × 32 in, about 204 l, 2 mm mild steel and the positions of suction, return, filler, breather, gauge sender and drain plug. A drawing change of July 1989 replaced the sight glass with a fuel gauge and tube-type sender.4
- The supplier’s boat lists for the Moody 37 (1986) and the 376 (1987) give the shaft, sterntube, P-bracket, rudder bar, rudder heel fitting and rudder tube the same supplier references (ASIT 134, AST 0175, ASP 0221, MSR 0584, ASR 0585, MSR 0579); only some of Marine Projects’ own numbers differ.3
