Bukh DV24

The Bukh DV24 is a two-cylinder, 0.964-litre four-stroke marine diesel from Bukh in Denmark, rated 24 hp at 3600 rpm. It keeps the DV20’s 85 × 85 mm bore and stroke but has direct injection; Bukh said this cuts fuel consumption by 12–15 % against the pre-chamber principle and makes cold starts easier. It came as the DV24 ME with a reverse-reduction gear and the DV24 SME with Bukh’s own saildrive, both normally raw-water cooled through a thermostat; the keel-cooled DV24 RME lifeboat engine is still built, and the DV29 and DV32 are close relatives. With the Bukh DV20 it shares the oil filter and the cooling-side wear parts (impeller 610G0102 with its cover gasket, thermostat gasket, block anode and its copper ring), while injector, lift pump, V-belt, alternator, thermostats, head gasket and gearbox are different; the three-cylinder DV36 belongs to another parts family. The Bukh documents behind this page date from 2001 to 2019, so very early DV24s may differ: order by engine number.

Wear parts & part numbers

PartOEM numberAlso fitsNote
Raw water pump impeller610G01022,1Johnson Pump 09-808B-11Impeller of the direct-cooling raw water pump 610G0030; the same number as on the DV20 from engine no. 97549. The Johnson number comes from one source only: Bukh Bremen, a Bukh dealer, lists 610G0102 with “new number 09-808B-1”, which is Johnson Pump’s impeller kit for its F35 pump; no Bukh parts list names it.
Pump cover gasket610G01032,3—Cover gasket of the direct-cooling raw water pump; the same as on the DV20. The pump also has two shaft seal rings 561B0127 and seals to the engine with O-ring 560B1032.
Raw water pump610G00302,4Johnson Pump F35B-94Complete pump for direct cooling in the 2014 DV24 ME list (wear plate 610G0032, cam 610G0106, shaft seal rings 561B0127 ×2, O-ring to the engine 560B1032). AWN sells the Johnson F35B-9 as a replacement for Bukh pump 610G0100 on DV10/18/20/24 ME/SME with direct cooling and says to order O-ring 560B1032 and two clamps 01-43238 with it, so older DV24s may carry the 610G0100.
Raw water pump610G01202—Raw water pump on engines with heat exchanger; the same number as on fresh-water-cooled DV20s. It seals to the engine with O-ring 560B1032; the DV24 list does not break it down into parts.
Engine oil filter610J00502,5,6—Spin-on throw-away filter, about 76 × 92 mm; the same on DV10, DV18, DV20, DV29 and DV32 (DV36 and DV48: 610J0200).
Fuel filter (engine)610D02012,5,7—Throw-away cartridge, about 80 × 110 mm, with drain screw; the complete filter with head is 610D0200. According to Bukh Bremen it also fits DV29/32/36/48 and late DV10 ME (from no. 207292) and DV20 ME (from no. 104271).
Air filter008E73102,5—Washable wire-gauze air inlet filter and silencer.
Fuel lift pump610C01202,5,8—Sealed diaphragm pump driven by the camshaft, with hand-priming lever; it cannot be taken apart, so Bukh recommends a water and dirt separator ahead of it. Gasket 000E4784. Not the DV20 pump (610C0080); the DV36 uses the same one.
Fuel injector610B92202,5,9,10,11—Complete nozzle holder, two per engine; DV24 and DV29 (DV32/36/48: 610B9250), not the DV20 part. Tighten to 59 ± 3 Nm.
Injector sealing washer522C3080 · 522C30822,5,10,11—Copper washer under the injector: 522C3080 from engine no. 121218/8395, 522C3082 up to no. 121217/8394 according to Bukh Bremen (the 2014 ME list shows 522C3080, the 2018 RME list 522C3082).
Alternator V-belt542A06112,5,12—10 × 1125 mm (Roflex 10 × 1125 LA), for DV24, DV29 and DV32; not the DV20 belt (542A0213).

Exhaust mixing elbow022D431116—Water-cooled exhaust bend for the DV24. One source (Bukh Bremen); not in the 2014 parts list, so check the engine number with the dealer.
Spares kit030D060917—Bukh “spare parts kit DV24”. One source (Bukh Bremen), which does not list the contents.

From the maintenance text, check list and lubrication table of Bukh’s owner’s handbook for the DV24 ME (2013); hours or time, whichever comes first. The handbook contradicts itself on the Baysan gear oil (every 150 h in the lubrication table, 250 h in the gearbox section) and on the idle speed (900–1200 rpm in the technical data, 800–1000 rpm in the starting section). The DV24 RME lifeboat engine follows the schedule in its own handbook.

Good to know

  • Note the engine type and serial number before you order: the serial number is on the port side, and Bukh asks for both with every order. Some parts depend on it, such as the copper washer under the injector (522C3080 or 522C3082).8,10,11
  • Changing the impeller is simple: drain the water from the engine, take off the pump’s front cover and pull the impeller out with pliers or two screwdrivers. If water drips from the drain hole under the pump flange, the seal inside the pump is leaking; replace it soon.8
  • On the DV24 a faulty thermostat closes, so the engine runs too hot (blue lamp and buzzer); the DV20’s bellows thermostat fails open instead. The insert comes out after undoing the four nuts on the housing’s top cover; if you ever run without it, the cooling water shunt must be shut off.8
  • Fuel filter: drain the old cartridge through its bottom screw, fill the new one with clean diesel and screw it on hand-tight plus about half a turn. Then bleed at the bleed screw with the lift pump’s hand lever and loosen the injector pipes while cranking. The lift pump is sealed, so Bukh recommends a water and dirt separator ahead of it.8
  • For winter, a raw-water-cooled DV24 has two drain plugs: above the oil filter on the starboard side and under the exhaust manifold. Clear the holes with a wire and run the engine for 30 seconds; Bukh says this does not harm the impeller. On heat-exchanger engines drain the raw-water side by taking off the pump cover and keep 30–50 % antifreeze in the fresh-water circuit.8
  • Bukh recommends a BERA 2B hull zinc for the DV24, clamped to the stern bearing so that it has electrical contact with the propeller; check it whenever the boat is ashore, and fit two BERA 2B or one BERA 1 if it wears fast. Never run the starter for more than 10 seconds, then pause for at least 30 seconds.8
