Cummins 6BT / 6BTA 5.9
The 6BT and 6BTA are the marine versions of Cummins’ mechanical 5.9-litre B-series in-line six with 12 valves, sold for boats since 1985. The 6BT is turbocharged only and has a Lucas CAV rotary injection pump (180 to 220 hp); the 6BTA adds an aftercooler, cooled by the engine coolant on the 250 and 260/270 hp versions and by sea water on the 315/330 and 355/370 hp versions, with a Nippon Denso pump on early engines and a Bosch P7100 in-line pump later. Cummins MerCruiser Diesel still sold both in 2008 as its Diamond series, next to the electronic common-rail QSB5.9 that followed them in the same power range (later the QSB6.7); the QSB shares some cooling-system parts with the late 6BTA but not its fuel system, and Cummins still offers the 6BT/6BTA as remanufactured ReCon engines from 180 to 370 hp. Parts change with rating and year, so the CPL number on the engine data tag, not the horsepower, decides which injector, sea-water pump or heat exchanger fits.

Manuals & documents
Cummins no longer publishes the 6BT/6BTA manuals openly: the owner’s manual and the parts catalogue for your serial number come from Cummins QuickServe Online after registration, or as PDFs from Cummins specialists such as Seaboard Marine, whose site also hosts Cummins’ installation directions. Its pages turn away automated requests but open normally in a browser. The data sheets of Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, which sold these engines until at least 2008, survive on archive.org. We host no manuals or drawings.

Good to know
- Before ordering, read the model, the engine serial number (ESN) and the CPL off the data tag. Many CPLs of this engine exist, and the parts follow the CPL, not the horsepower: the injector alone is 3802333 on a 6BT 210 (CPL 742), 4089254 on a 220 (CPL 8206), 3802323 on an early 300 (CPL 970) and 3802833 on a 370 (CPL 8457).84,53,54,56,59
- Three generations of Sherwood sea-water pump take three different impellers: 10615K in the M71 of the 6BT, 15000K in the GC1/GC5 of the early 6BTA 250, 17000K in the 1700-series pumps from the 300 on. Seaboard Marine advises renewing cam and wear plate along with the impeller once a pump has seen salt water for a few years; on the later 6BTA the pump sits behind the front engine mount, and you may have to take the weight off that mount to get it out.88,16,22,25
- The aftercooler needs the most attention: Cummins’ schedule has it flushed every 300 h or yearly, and Seaboard Marine reassembles it with plenty of grease (it uses Alco Metalube), because corrosion between the brass core and the aluminium housing makes it hard to take apart later. Since mid-2020 Cummins supplies MOTA aftercoolers whose cores, caps and O-rings don’t fit the older units, so check which one you have before ordering seals.65,89,36
- On B- and C-series marine engines of the late 1980s and early 1990s the idler pulley mounting failed too often; Cummins improved it around 1994, and Seaboard Marine describes an upgrade with a 7/16 in grade 8 bolt for older engines. Most engines take the green belt 3288689; engines with a large-frame alternator or without the idler need the longer yellow 3288735.90,37,39
- The 6BTA tolerates overheating badly: the factory thermostat starts to open at 83 °C (181 °F), and Cummins sets the maximum coolant temperature at 96 °C (205 °F), the point at which, according to Seaboard Marine, the standard alarm sounds. Seaboard therefore recommends a second, independent alarm and, for hard-working planing boats, its own 160 °F thermostat; that is a dealer’s recommendation, not a Cummins specification.70,85
- Cummins’ schedule has the zinc anodes inspected every 75 h or 3 months, more often depending on bonding and water. Heat exchanger and aftercooler take the 1/2 in pencil zinc 68241; the factory gear-oil coolers of the mechanical B series usually have no zinc, but many replacement coolers take two 3/8 in zincs, so check yours.65,28,30
