ePropulsion Spirit 1.0
The Spirit 1.0 is ePropulsion’s portable 1 kW electric outboard, which the maker compares with a 3 hp petrol engine: a brushless direct-drive motor with a floating lithium battery that locks onto its top, found on tenders, inflatables and small fishing boats and as an auxiliary on small sailing boats. The first version ran at 40 V with a 1018 Wh battery; in 2020 the Spirit 1.0 Plus replaced it, with 48 V, a 1276 Wh battery in the same case, a metal power connector and the option of an external battery. The Spirit 1.0 Evo (from 2021) adds a detachable tiller or remote controls and hydrogeneration, which recharges the battery through the propeller under sail; Plus and Evo are still sold next to the Spirit 2 of 2026, a different motor not covered here. With no oil, impeller, spark plug or gearbox, owner service comes down to propeller and shear pin, anodes, a few grease points, the connectors and battery care.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Propeller | Every 50 h or every 3 months16 |
| Anode | Every 50 h or every 3 months16 |
| Lubrication | Every 100 h or every 6 months16 |
| Full service | Dealer check every 200 h or yearly: propeller and shear pin, anodes and grease points, replacing parts as needed16 |
| Electrical connections | Clean the power and communication plugs with contact cleaner every 2 months, and at once if corrosion shows; the safety notes also call for contact spray about every 3 months16 |
| Fresh-water wash | After every use in salt water, rinse the whole motor with fresh water; tilt it out of the water after use16 |
| Battery charging & storage | Store at about 60 % charge, dry, at 15–25 °C; every 3 months charge it back to about 60 %, and charge it fully before use. Recharge straight after a full discharge and never run it below 33 V16 |
| Storage / winterising | For more than 2 months: clean and check the motor, then store it dry and ventilated, out of direct sun, ideally in its original packaging and with no load on the propeller35 |
Hours or months, whichever comes first. The schedule is from ePropulsion’s Spirit 1.0 Plus user manual (V2.9, 2025): the owner checks propeller, shear pin and anodes and greases the clamp and tilt bracket, and a dealer does the 200-hour or yearly check. The storage rule is from the Spirit 1.0 Evo user manual (V1.5, 2025).

Good to know
- Lay the battery up at about 60 % in a dry place at 15–25 °C and recharge it every three months; ePropulsion stresses this point. A battery left flat for a long time goes into sleep mode and only wakes up on the charger, so never store it empty.16
- Carry a spare shear pin (04-0103-25) and a 17 mm socket. Disconnect the battery first; on Plus and Evo take out the anode screw on the nut, then the 17 mm locknut and the disc spring. Put it back together in this order: washer, shear pin, propeller, disc spring, locknut, anode.16,4
- After salt water, rinse the whole motor with fresh water and tilt it clear. The anodes are the main wear part: check them every few months and order the right set, because the first generation and Plus motors built before 2022 use two trapezoidal clamp anodes, while 2022-on Plus and every Evo use the Evo clamp anode.9,10,16
- Keep the plugs clean and dry: contact spray every few months, caps on every port not in use, and on the Evo a cap on the communication socket whenever no cable is plugged in, or it corrodes and the motor loses its link to the control. The metal power plug on Plus and Evo only needs hand-tightening, about half a turn.35
- Batteries and chargers do not swap between the first-generation 40 V Spirit 1.0 and the 48 V Plus and Evo, and only Plus and Evo can run on an external E-Series battery. When you buy a used motor or a spare battery, check the generation: the model name is on the tiller, and the battery label reads either 1018 Wh / 40.7 V or 1276 Wh.44,13,36
- If the display shows E30 (throttle position sensor), recalibrate the throttle as the Evo manual describes before you suspect a fault; E10 usually means something is wrapped around the propeller. The manuals describe no firmware update by the owner, so software problems go to an ePropulsion dealer.35
