Frigoboat / Frigomatic refrigeration

Frigoboat is the marine refrigeration brand of Veco S.p.A. in Italy, which sells the same 12/24 V range in Europe as Frigomatic; in North America it comes through Coastal Climate Control. A kit turns an insulated icebox into a fridge or freezer: a condensing unit with a Secop (ex-Danfoss) BD35F or BD50F compressor, an aluminium or stainless evaporator and a thermostat, each pre-charged with R134a and joined by self-sealing quick couplings. The best-known version is the keel-cooled K35F/K50F, whose condenser is a sintered-bronze Keel Cooler through the hull, so it runs without fan or pump; the air-cooled Paris 35F and Capri 35F/50F and the pumped water-cooled W35F/W50F cover boats where no keel cooler is wanted. The ‘35’ units suit boxes up to about 7 cu ft (about 200 l) and the ‘50’ units larger fridges and freezers; the original Smart Speed Control has given way to the Merlin II, and older systems with Danfoss BD2, BD2.5 or BD3 compressors are not covered here.

Frigoboat’s own website is gone (frigoboat.com is a parked domain) and Veco’s downloads need a dealer login, so the Frigoboat documents here come from Coastal Climate Control in Annapolis (USA), a distributor listed by Veco; the compressor data sheets and controller instructions come from Secop. Good to know

  • Read the fault LED before you buy parts: code 1, supply voltage too low, is by far the most common, and most ‘dead compressor’ cases turn out to be wiring. Measure the voltage at the controller’s own + and − terminals while the compressor tries to start; if it sags well below the battery voltage, look for a tired fuse holder, breaker or negative bus connection before you change the controller.74,75
  • Speed control decides your power use. With only a thermostat on C and T the compressor runs at its slowest speed; the Speed Board lets you set 2000–3500 rpm by hand, while the Merlin II picks the speed itself and ramps up gently from a warm start. Never fit both: take the Speed Board off when you install a Merlin II.13,3
  • Keel cooling is the quietest and most efficient option, with no fan and no pump, and suits warm water. Air cooling is cheapest but needs cool intake air, never air from the engine room. A keel-cooled unit must not run with the boat hauled out unless you add the air add-on condenser or rig temporary water cooling; on keel-plus-air setups, run the fan only ashore.13
  • Bond the keel cooler to battery negative with no switch in the line. Choose the zinc (Z) version only if the cooler is not already tied into the boat’s bonding and anode system; otherwise its two zincs get eaten quickly.20
  • Box temperature problems are often the box itself: plug the drain, seal the tube hole and test the lid seal by closing it on a banknote, which should be gripped. Defrost by switching off at the breaker and letting the ice thaw; never chip ice off the aluminium plate or use a heat gun or hair dryer.13
  • Listings found through ‘BD35F’ or ‘BD50F’ may come from other fridges built on the same Secop compressor, such as Isotherm or Waeco units. The compressor and its Secop electronic unit (101N0212, 101N0510) are the same parts there, so such listings can fit your Frigoboat; for evaporators, couplings and thermostats, go by the Frigoboat numbers above.4,5,2
