Nautitech 40 Open
The Nautitech 40 Open (called Open 40 in its first years, and sold in the US as the Bavaria Open 40) is an 11.98 m cruising catamaran drawn by Marc Lombard and built by Nautitech in Rochefort, a yard Bavaria Yachts bought in 2014; cockpit and saloon share one level and the two wheels sit far aft on the hulls. 259 were built from 2013 to February 2026 in three generations: the original, the MK2 shown at Cannes in 2017 with a reworked interior, and the 2023 ‘Millésime’, updated again for 2025; the 41 Type S replaced it. The engines changed more than the boat: the boats tested in 2015 had Yanmars of 21 or 29 hp, Bavaria’s pages of 2017 name the Volvo Penta D1-20, and from 2019 the yard lists two 30 hp Volvo Pentas, with 40 hp as an option. Nautitech publishes no owner’s manual online; documents and yard parts come through the dealer or the yard, quoting the hull number.

Good to know
- Goiot recalled the escape hatches in the inner sides of the hulls that it delivered before September 2018, because the glazing could come away from the frame. Nautitech says the 40 Open built between August 2014 and 2018 is concerned: ask the dealer or the yard, with the hull number, whether the hatches on the boat were dealt with.18,35
- Read the engine plates before ordering parts. Depending on the year the boat has Yanmars (21 or 29 hp on the 2015 test boats), Volvo Penta D1-20s (Bavaria, 2017) or 30 hp Volvo Pentas (from the 2019 data sheet), and 40 hp was an option. Don’t trust the builder’s type names: Bavaria’s page of July 2019 says ‘D2-20’ and Nautitech’s 2019 sheet ‘VP D2-30’, types Volvo Penta does not make.1,6,8,10,14
- Tank sizes changed in 2020: Nautitech’s brochure of January 2020 still gives 2 × 215 l of fuel and water, the August 2020 brochure 2 × 200 l of fuel and 2 × 300 l of water; the first data sheet of 2013 had 2 × 150 l and 2 × 240 l. For senders, hoses or fittings, measure the tank aboard.23,11,4
- The mast top is about 20 m above the water (20.05 m, 65′9″, by the builder’s figures). SAIL points out that this makes the US Intracoastal Waterway awkward, where several fixed bridges clear less than 65 ft at high tide.10,14
- Navigation electronics depended on the pack the first owner ordered: SAIL’s 2015 test boat had Garmin, Nautitech’s model pages list B&G as partner, and the US dealer’s 2026 boats carry a Raymarine pack (Axiom 9, i70s, p70s). Check what is aboard before ordering transducers, displays or pilot parts.1,12,13
- Since August 2026 Nautitech has been in court-supervised restructuring; the yard says production, deliveries and after-sales service continue. Parts for the bought-in equipment (Volvo Penta, Lewmar, Facnor, Raymarine) are also available through those makers’ own dealers, independently of the yard.26
