Lewmar Ocean & EVO winches
Lewmar’s Ocean winches — Lewmar calls the range the most popular winch ever made — and their successors, the EVO range, are the sheet and halyard winches on a great many cruising yachts. Sizes run from small single-speed winches (6–16) to two-speed 65s; the number is the size class, ST means self-tailing. Every model strips from the top without unbolting it from the deck, and Lewmar sells service kits by size group plus pawl-and-spring kits. Up to size 48 the gearbox uses the small pawl, from size 50 the large one.

Good to know
- Never put grease on pawls or their springs: they stick in their pockets and the winch can run back under load. Oil them lightly, and keep grease to a thin smear on gears, ratchet tracks and bearings.1
- After reassembling the ratchet gears, check that the pawls engage the right way round before loading the winch — fitted backwards, they let the drum run free.1
- Check the winch size before ordering pawls: up to 48 take the small pawl (1260/8), 50 and up the large one (1264/8). Both use the same spring, 1260/7.5
- Lewmar lists the EVO 50 under both the 30–50 kit (48000019) and the 50–65 kit (48000017). The EVO 50 shares its gearing with the Ocean 48, which uses small pawls — look at the pawls in your winch before you buy.1
- On EVO 15–65 the self-tailing jaws are spring-loaded from below: when you lift the crown off, watch for small springs stuck to it. Rinse the crowns in fresh water and check them and the stripper ring for wear.1
- Worn self-tailer jaws and top caps come as size-specific kits (Ocean and EVO jaw kits, top-cap & O-ring kits) — pick your size on Lewmar’s kit pages.23
