Beneteau Oceanis 411
The Oceanis 411 is an aft-cockpit cruising yacht of about 12.7 m, designed by Groupe Finot and built by Beneteau from 1997 (as the 1998 model) to about 2004; it was sold as Oceanis 411 and Oceanis Clipper 411, and in North America as the Beneteau 411, built by Beneteau USA in Marion, South Carolina. It has a solid GRP hull with a bonded inner moulding, a balsa-cored deck, a cast-iron bulb keel, a single wheel and a diesel on a conventional shaft, with two, three or four cabins and two heads; Beneteau had built more than 1200 by the end of 2001. Late in the run came the Performance and Celebration limited editions of 2002, with a taller mast and a Volvo Penta D2-55, and in the US the 411 Limited package of 2003; the successor is the Oceanis Clipper 423. The Oceanis 41.1 built from 2016 is a different boat, but listings often write it as “411” too, so check the year.

Good to know
- First find out which 411 you are looking at. North American boats (built in Marion, South Carolina, sold as ‘Beneteau 411’) have a Westerbeke engine (the 42B4 early on, later the 44A4 of 40 hp, with a 56 hp Yanmar as option), 110 V, an in-mast furling main and usually the 1.45 m shoal keel. European boats have a Volvo or Yanmar engine, 220 V, a slab-reefed main with lazy-jacks and a 2.00 m or 1.70 m keel. Read the engine plate rather than the listing.8,1,9
- The engine sits under the companionway: the two-part GRP steps hinge up (on a gas strut, according to the US lists). It drives a conventional stainless shaft that runs in a skeg moulded into the hull, so there is no saildrive diaphragm to replace; check the shaft seal, the cutless bearing and the shaft anode instead.1,9
- A mast 0.80 m taller, a full-batten main on ball-bearing cars and a Volvo Penta D2-55 with a folding propeller mark a 2002 Performance or Celebration; the Celebration (70 boats) also has a navy-blue hull with gold decoration, Raymarine ST60 instruments, a Raychart 530 and an ST6001+ autopilot. A midnight-blue US boat is more likely a 2003 ‘411 Limited’, with a 56 hp Yanmar, 54 primaries and an electric windlass.4,5,10
- The winches are Lewmar chrome self-tailers: 48 CSTO primaries, with 30 CSTO on the coachroof in Europe and 40 CSTO in the US. Lewmar still publishes its winch service manual (standard and self-tailing, sizes 6 to 90), so a stiff or slipping winch can be serviced on board instead of replaced.1,9,19
- As delivered, the electrical system is modest: in Europe two 140 Ah service batteries, a 96 Ah engine battery and a 20 A charger; in the US one 200 Ah and one 100 Ah battery, a 40 A charger and a 50 A alternator. Check what has been upgraded before you add an inverter, a fridge or a watermaker.1,8,9
- Beneteau delivered an owner’s manual with every boat but does not publish it online: ask a Beneteau dealer first, otherwise Beneteau’s helpdesk explains how to request a copy. For the US engines, Westerbeke publishes the operators manuals for the 42B Four and the 44A Four free on westerbeke.com.1,20,21,22
