Volvo Penta D2-55

The D2-55 is Volvo Penta’s 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated sailboat diesel with an in-line injection pump, glow plugs and freshwater cooling. Volvo launched it in 2001, added the turbocharged D2-75 on the same block in 2003, and stopped production in December 2016, when the D2-50 and D2-60 replaced it. It was built in six versions, A to F, and went into yachts such as the Bavaria 46 Cruiser and Cruiser 46, usually with a saildrive. The filters, impeller kit, raw-water pump, glow plugs and injectors fit every version, but the early D2-55 and D2-55B differ from the C–F engines in exhaust elbow, drive belt, alternator (60 A instead of 115 A) and saildrive (MS25S instead of 130S), and the F has its own head gaskets, oil pump and injection pump. Read the version letter on the engine plate before you order.

Air filter	`3580509`^30,31,32,33	—	Foam insert in the intake silencer 3583068, all versions; Volvo’s Service and Maintenance manual says to replace it, not clean it. A dealer warns that the same number covers three filters with different inside diameters: measure the old one.

Hours or time, whichever comes first. The schedule is the service protocol Volvo Penta generates for the D2-55; it is the same for every version from A to F, and the F manual names it as the valid schedule. The older operator’s manuals (2003–2016) differ mainly in the oil change, 500 h instead of 400 h, and also list heat-exchanger cleaning and an injector check, which the protocol no longer names.

Good to know

Yearly service parts: oil filter 3840525, fuel filter 861477, impeller kit 21951346 and the element for the boat’s pre-filter (3581078 or 861014, depending on the housing). Volvo’s boxed kit 21189426 holds the first three and is listed for every D2-55. The filters are the same as on the D1-30/D2-40, the impeller kit is not, and kits sold as 21951348 are for Volvo petrol engines.^29,1,4,26,27
Read the version letter on the engine plate before ordering. The D2-55 and D2-55B have the 60 A alternator with V-belt 978710, exhaust elbow 3589544 with gasket 859834 and the MS25S saildrive; the C–F have the 115 A alternator with ribbed belt 3584086, elbow 21424345 with gasket 888596 and the 130S. The F also has its own graded head gaskets, oil pump and injection pump.^{35,40,57,61,93,16,129,133}
Check the belt warm, after a run: the operator’s manuals allow about 10 mm of deflection under thumb pressure, the current Service and Maintenance manual only 3–4 mm. Lubricate a new impeller with glycerine only, push it in with a twist in the direction of rotation and fit a new cover gasket (cover bolts 6 Nm).^113,130,32
Fill engine oil by the dipstick, not by the book: the A–E manuals give about 10.5 l with filter, the 2016 manual for the F 9.5 l and the current Service and Maintenance manual 10.6 l. Volvo recommends checking cold, with the engine level, and keeping the level between MIN and MAX.^129,130,32
Many consumables are Perkins parts under Volvo numbers — oil filter 140517050, fuel filter 4429491, injector 131406490 — and dealers sell them as genuine Perkins at lower cost.^13,18,71
Inspect the cast exhaust elbow and its small water connector 859836 for corrosion; both are common failure points, and stainless replacements exist for both.^66,142
