Hallberg-Rassy 36

The Hallberg-Rassy 36 is a cruising yacht designed by Germán Frers and built by Hallberg-Rassy in Ellös, Sweden, from 1989 to 2003: 602 boats by the yard’s count, with a bolted-on lead keel, a deck-stepped Seldén rig with double spreaders and an aft cabin reached through a walk-through past the engine room. Hulls 1 to 256 (1989–1994) are the Mk I with a narrow transom and a hull length of 10.87 m; from hull 257 the aft third was redrawn into the Mk II with an integrated bathing platform, a transom 30 cm wider and a hull length of 11.31 m, while keel, rudder, rig and engine installation stayed the same. Every HR 36 has a four-cylinder Volvo Penta diesel driving a shaft: the MD22 (42 kW/57 hp) in the yard’s documents up to 1999, the MD22P from 2000 and the D2-55 (41 kW/55 hp) from model year 2002, so read the type plate before ordering parts. The yard publishes no owner’s manual for the HR 36 but keeps its specifications, wiring diagram, through-hull plan and brochures on its previous-models page; spare parts come from Hallberg-Rassy Parts AB, and the successor is the Hallberg-Rassy 37 (2003–2012).

Good to know

  • Find your hull number first: boats delivered before 15 June 1998 have no HIN, only the type and production number (for example 36-123) on a plate on the sliding hatch and handwritten on the underside of the floorboards. Up to no. 256 it is a Mk I, from 257 a Mk II. The yard’s newsletters list the improvements of each model year, which runs from 1 August to 31 July.23,7,29
  • Check which engine a used HR 36 really has: the yard’s documents give the Volvo Penta MD22 up to 1999, the MD22P in 2000–2001 and the D2-55 from model year 2002, and the yard’s own Mk I page of 2000 already says MD 22 P. Filters, impeller and belts differ, so the plate on the engine decides.4,5,10,8,7
  • The lead keel hangs on 17 stainless steel bolts of 20 mm. Hallberg-Rassy’s recommended torque for M20 keel bolts is about 250 Nm, with the threads well greased.12,23
  • The standard HR 36 has twelve through-hull fittings, plus a vent if a holding tank was fitted; the yard’s plan shows where each one is. Those below the waterline have ball valves inside: work them now and then, and once a year tap the fittings with a hammer and screwdriver. If the metal sounds porous, replace it; if not, the yard sees no reason to change them, whatever their age. Never close the cockpit drains when leaving the boat.30,23,14
  • Hallberg-Rassy describes changing the cutlass bearing without pulling the shaft: take off the propeller, undo the grub screws and draw the old bearing out with a wire hook between shaft and bearing. If it will not move, chisel away the filler, remove the M10 bolts of the flange and unscrew the bronze housing anticlockwise with a large pipe wrench; refit it with sealant on all joints and bolts.13
  • For the yard and road transport: the HR 36 is 3.48 m high without the windscreen and 3.86 m with it, and Hallberg-Rassy publishes a two-page sketch of a wooden winter cradle with all dimensions, bolted with M12.7,31,32
