Seldén Furlex

Furlex is the headsail furling and reefing system of the Swedish mast maker Seldén, sold through its dealers as a complete kit with a new forestay, furling line, leads and prefeeder. The current fourth generation 104S, 204S, 304S and 404S arrived in 2014/15 for boats of about 25 to 65 ft; the compact 50S has been built since 2007 for about 18 to 26 ft, and the S series 100S to 500S ran from 1997 to 2014. The first types A to D (1983–1997) appear here with their manuals only; Seldén lists spare parts for Type B MkII, C and D as no longer available. Through-deck TD versions share many parts with the S models, while Furlex Electric is only a pointer here: a manual 200S–400S or 204S–404S can be converted by swapping the drum for a motor unit.

Grease50S, regularly (no fixed interval): take the sail off and the line off the drum, flush with fresh water, let it dry, then brush grease onto the lower bearing (points A and B) and the halyard swivel (C and D)105
Fresh-water washAt the yearly service and whenever the Furlex is off the boat: wash the whole system with fresh water and a mild detergent, rinse every trace of detergent off (some attack aluminium), then treat the dry anodised extrusions with a silicone-free polish or wax3,6

Full serviceFurlex Electric: once a year check the worm gear with the emergency handle, look for oil or grease leaks, inspect cables and protective sleeve and grease the bearings; the motor unit goes to an authorised Seldén dealer at least once every 5 years (more often for charter or long-distance sailing)106

Good to know

  • Halyard wrap is the failure to avoid: if the halyard runs too close to parallel with the forestay it winds round the foil as you furl and can ruin the halyard, the extrusion and even the forestay. Keep the angle Seldén asks for (15–20° on 104S and 404S, 10–15° on 204S and 304S, 5–10° on the 50S and the older S series) with a halyard lead or sheave box, and keep the spinnaker halyard well clear, for example led round the upper shroud.3
  • Hoist so the halyard swivel ends at least 50 mm below the top guard (20 mm on the 50S), then mark the halyard so nobody overtightens it next time.3,105
  • Wind about 30 turns of line onto the drum before hoisting, and check that 3–5 turns are still on the drum with the sail fully rolled; in strong wind the sail rolls tighter and needs more turns.3
  • Never open a halyard swivel or drum unit yourself: the balls sit loose in their races and are hard to get back in. On the 204S to 404S the line drum and its bearing can be renewed with the drum kit; otherwise swap the complete swivel or drum unit, or let a Furlex dealer service it.9,6
  • Before winter, wash off the salt and rinse away all detergent (some attack aluminium), let everything dry and never wrap a damp Furlex in plastic. Where it freezes, store it dry or with the middle extrusions raised so no water freezes in the foil; on the 104S to 404S the drum and swivel come off for storage.3,6
  • Buying a used Furlex: the model is printed on top of the line drum and the wire size on the lower terminal, so a photo of both tells you which spares fit. Check the foil grooves for dents; a damaged groove chews the luff tape.105,3
