Bavaria 40 Cruiser

Bavaria Yachtbau of Giebelstadt, Germany, has sold two different aft-cockpit yachts of about 12.35 m under this name, and this page covers both. The 40 Cruiser of 2008 replaced the 39 Cruiser and was listed as CRUISER 40 on Bavaria’s site by the end of 2009: twin wheels, three cabins, a 17.45 m mast and, in Europe, a Volvo Penta D1-30 saildrive as standard, with the D2-40 or D2-55 at extra cost; Bavaria names no designer for it. In September 2010 Bavaria launched the Cruiser 40, a new design by Farr Yacht Design with BMW Group DesignworksUSA, with an 18.68 m mast, a 2.05 m or 1.65 m keel, genoa tracks on the coachroof and again the D1-30 as standard; the sportier Cruiser 40 S followed in January 2011, and the Cruiser 41 announced in May 2013 took their place. Sellers call both boats “Bavaria 40 Cruiser”, so check the year of build and the mast height before you order parts; the Bavaria 40 of around 2000, the centre-cockpit 40 Ocean and the Vision 40 are other boats.

Good to know

  • Sellers advertise both boats as “Bavaria 40 Cruiser”. A boat built from 2008 to 2010 with a mast of about 17.45 m above the waterline is the 40 Cruiser; one built from late 2010 with an 18.68 m mast (19.18 m on the 40 S), genoa tracks on the coachroof and twin mainsheets without a traveller is the Farr-designed Cruiser 40. Rig, sails, windows and many fittings differ, so give the hull number when you order from Bavaria’s partner SVB or a dealer.2,4,50,40,60
  • Check engine and keel before you order. Both boats had the Volvo Penta D1-30 as standard in Europe, but the D2-40 and D2-55 were options, and Bavaria Yachts USA delivered the D2-40 (2008) or a 53 hp engine (2011) as standard. The 40 Cruiser has a cast-iron keel of about 1.86–1.90 m or a 2.00–2.02 m lead keel; the Cruiser 40 has 2.05 m or 1.65 m in cast iron, the 40 S 2.30 m. Read the engine plate and measure the draft.6,57,4,56,8,11
  • Bavaria cut the standard specification of the 40 Cruiser for the 2010 model year: the 2008 list includes a second head, 360 l of water, hot water, a microwave and ST60+ instruments, while the lists from mid-2009 put these into the Family, Holiday and Comfort packages or the options. Compare a boat’s inventory with the list for its year rather than with a brochure.1,15,28
  • The electronics depend on the year: Raymarine ST60+, ST6002 and C70/C80 plotters on the 2008–2010 lists; Raymarine ST70, SPX 10 and C90W on the first Cruiser 40 lists of 2010; Garmin GMI 10, GHP 12 and GPSMAP 4008/5008 from early 2011. Many boats were ordered with packages or refitted later, so check what is actually on board before you buy a display, pilot part or sensor.6,22,7,31
  • Both boats drive through a Volvo Penta saildrive. Volvo Penta’s service protocol has the rubber seal between drive and hull inspected at the regular services and replaced every 7 years, so ask when it was last changed and plan it into the next haul-out.13
  • Bavaria does not publish owner’s manuals online; its downloads page holds brochures of the current range only, and the old model pages survive only on archive.org. Original spare parts come through Bavaria’s partner SVB or a Bavaria dealer, who need the hull number or the model and year of build; the Owners Club asks for the hull number too.61,60,62
