Volvo Penta D2-40
The D2-40 is the four-cylinder, 1.51-litre member of Volvo Penta’s D1/D2 sailboat range — essentially a D1-30 with one more cylinder (same 77 × 81 mm bore and stroke). It comes with an MS15 reverse gear or a 130S/130SR saildrive, has a 115 A alternator and freshwater cooling through a tubular heat exchanger. Versions A, B and F share the same service parts. Not to be confused with the larger D2-50 to D2-75, which share its oil and fuel filters but use a different impeller.

| Impeller kit (with gasket) | 222229363,4,5replaces 3593659 | Jabsco 18673-00011,2 | All versions; the same kit as the D1-30 and MD2010–2040 — but not the D2-50 to D2-75, which take another impeller. Beware of kit 21951346, often sold as the ‘D2-40 impeller’: per Volvo’s own list it does not fit. |
| Pump cover gasket | 8403853,6 | — | Fit a new one whenever the cover comes off. |
| Raw water pump | 35936553,7 | — | |
| Engine oil filter | 38405255,8 | — | Same filter on D1-30, MD2030/MD2040 and D2-55 to D2-75. |
| Fuel filter (engine) | 8614779,10,5 | — | Engine-mounted spin-on fine filter. |
| Fuel pre-filter | 3581078 · 86101411,12 | — | 3581078 for the 877766/877767 water separator, 861014 (10 µm) for the 877762 housing — only if a Volvo Penta pre-filter is fitted; many boats have another make. Some dealer ‘service kits’ call 3581078 a fuel filter; it is the pre-filter element, not the engine-mounted filter. |

Good to know
- Lubricate a new impeller with glycerine only — other lubricants damage it — push it in with a clockwise twist and fit a new cover gasket. Volvo Penta says to always carry a spare impeller.23
- Check belt tension with the engine warm: the belt should give about 3–4 mm between the pulleys.20
- Volvo changed the oil for the MS15 gearbox and the 130S saildrive from ATF (2007 manuals) to SAE 15W-40 engine oil (2021 manual). Find out what is already in yours before topping up.23
- Never mix the older green Volvo coolant with the newer VCS yellow — check which one the engine has before topping up.20
- Saildrive and propeller anodes: zinc for salt water, magnesium for fresh water; replace at 50 % wear or at least once a season, never paint them.21
