Hanse 385

The Hanse 385 is an 11.40 m cruising yacht from HanseYachts AG in Greifswald, Germany, designed by judel/vrolijk & co; the builder’s drawings date from June 2011, the earliest standard-equipment list we found is valid from 23 August 2011, and on the builder’s website the Hanse 388 took its place in the summer of 2017. It has a self-tacking jib, twin wheels, a cast-iron T-keel drawing 1.99 m (a shallow keel of 1.62–1.63 m was the option) and, according to Hanse’s option list, a Volvo Penta D1-30 of 27 hp on a 130S saildrive, with the 38 hp D2-40 as an option. There was one version, with two cabins as standard and a second aft cabin as an option, but the dated lists change details: CE category A and 320 l of water in 2011, category B and 300 l in 2016, two 80 Ah batteries in 2011 against 90 + 160 Ah later. Hanse publishes no owner’s manual; its owners area offers manuals, wiring plans and drawings after registration with the boat’s CE code or Sentinel ID.

Manuals & documents

Hanse publishes no owner’s manual for the 385: it comes with the boat, and the owners area with the manuals of the installed equipment, technical documents, wiring plans and drawings needs registration with the boat’s CE code or Sentinel ID. The links go to the builder’s document server (the specification list of December 2016, the brochure of January 2017, the 2011 and 2017 drawings and two boat tests it hosts), to its model-history page and to archived copies of the builder’s 2011 list and brochure, its 2015 option lists and its model page. We host no documents.

Good to know

  • The 2011 list names a ‘Volvo D2-30’, which Volvo Penta never built. Hanse’s 2015 option list names the D1-30 (27 hp) as standard and the D2-40 (38 hp) as an option, both on the 130S saildrive, while the 2016 list names no maker at all. Read the engine plate before you order filters, impeller or a manual.2,1,3
  • Hanse’s figures depend on the date of the document: CE category A and 320 l of water in the list of August 2011, category B and 300 l in the list of December 2016; two 80 Ah batteries in 2011, 90 + 160 Ah later; depth sounder and log standard in 2011, only a compass in 2016; hull length 10.90 m in the lists, 10.99 m in the launch brochure. Go by the build year and the CE plate when you compare adverts.2,3,12,11
  • The standard boat has only two self-tailing ‘40 AST’ winches, and every halyard, reefing line and sheet ends on them; SAIL’s 2015 test advises the optional second pair. The January 2017 brochure lists Lewmar 40 ST EVO secondary winches and Lewmar 40 EST EVO electric halyard winches, so count the winches and check for electric ones before buying service kits.2,3,4,7
  • The owner’s manual came with the boat and is not public. Hanse’s owners area gives the manuals of the installed equipment, technical documents, wiring plans and drawings after registration with the CE code or the Sentinel ID; Hanse does not say how far back it covers older boats, so when you buy used, ask the seller for the CE code and the original folder.26
  • Segler-Zeitung’s test of an early boat (01/2012) criticised squeaking, partly hollow floorboards, a water pump under the head of the forward berth that disturbs sleep, and an engine room that could be better insulated. These are easy things to check at a viewing.8
  • The cast-iron T-keel hangs on stainless keel bolts, and the builder’s 2011 feature drawings stress the reinforced bottom structure around it. At a survey, look at the keel-to-hull joint and the bolts from inside, above all after a grounding.2,3,9
