Volvo Penta D1-30

The D1-30 is the three-cylinder, 1.13-litre naturally aspirated diesel of Volvo Penta’s D1/D2 sailboat range; the four-cylinder D2-40 shares its 77 × 81 mm bore and stroke. It comes with an MS15 reverse gear for shaft drive or a 130S/130SR saildrive, has a 115 A alternator and a tubular heat exchanger with built-in expansion tank. It took over the MD2030’s role and was built in A, B and F versions, which share the same service parts. This page also covers the D1-20, the smaller three-cylinder engine of the same range: 0.76 litres on a 67 × 72 mm bore and stroke, 13.8 kW (18.8 hp) and 2.8 l of oil instead of 3.5 l. It shares the impeller kit, fuel filters, air filter and thermostat with the D1-30 but has its own oil filter, belt, seawater pump and service kit; where a value or part number differs, the D1-20 is named, otherwise the entry applies to both engines.

Good to know

Check whether you have a D1-20 or a D1-30 before ordering: they share the impeller kit, fuel filter and air filter, but the oil filter, belt, seawater pump and service kit have different numbers. The parts list names the engine for each.^28,5
Lubricate a new impeller with glycerine only — other lubricants damage it — push it in with a clockwise twist and fit a new cover gasket. Volvo Penta says to always carry a spare impeller.⁴⁰
Check belt tension with the engine warm: the belt should give about 3–4 mm between the pulleys.⁴²
Volvo changed the oil for the MS15 gearbox and the 130S saildrive from ATF (2007 manuals) to SAE 15W-40 engine oil (2021 manual). Find out what is already in yours before topping up.⁴⁰
Never mix the older green Volvo coolant with the newer VCS yellow — check which one the engine has before topping up.⁴²
Saildrive and propeller anodes: zinc for salt water, magnesium for fresh water; replace at 50 % wear or at least once a season, never paint them.⁴³
