Leopard 40
The name Leopard 40 covers two different 12 m cruising catamarans built by Robertson and Caine in Cape Town, sold under the Leopard Catamarans brand and, in charter trim, as the Moorings 4000. The first (Mk I, 2005 to about 2009) is a Morrelli & Melvin design with an aft-facing galley and a bar towards the cockpit, the mainsheet traveller on the hardtop arch, stepped hulls and a 6.13 m beam; it had two Volvo Penta D1-30 engines at first and Yanmars from late 2006. The second (Mk II, launched in December 2014 and built until about 2020) is a new Simonis Voogd design with the galley forward next to a door onto the foredeck, a raised helm, a 6.72 m beam and two 29 hp Yanmars; the 2021–22 range starts at the Leopard 42. Hulls, decks, interiors and equipment differ, so check which one you have; the current Leopard 40 PC is a power catamaran and a third boat again.

Equipment & its manuals
Standard equipment as the builder’s documents list it. Boats were ordered with options and refitted since — check what is actually aboard.
| Item | Model | Manual / page | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | Volvo Penta D1-30 × 21,2,3Mk I, 2005 to mid 2006: 29 hp each, with saildrives | Volvo Penta D1-30 Parts & service page | The August 2006 Moorings 4000 sheet names the D1-30, the February 2005 sheet says Volvo 29 hp. The 2005 Leopard brochure prints 19 hp, most likely a misprint; check the engine plate. |
| Engine | Yanmar × 24,5Mk I, late 2006 to 2009: 29 hp each (December 2006 sheet) or 30 hp (February 2009 sheet), with saildrives | Yanmar YM series operation manual (2YM15, 3YM20, 3YM30), 2009 | The builder gives only the power, not the model. Yanmar’s 29 hp sailboat diesel of those years is the 3YM30, but read the engine plate before you order parts. The December 2006 sheet still says ‘Yanmar D1-30’, a leftover from the Volvo edition. |
| Engine | Yanmar 3YM30C × 26,7,8,9,10Mk II, from 2015: 29 hp each, with saildrives; Leopard gives 2 × 29 hp, the Moorings 4000 lists name the 3YM30C | Yanmar 3YM30 Parts & service page | In the Moorings 4000 standard-boat lists of 2015 and 2016 the base engines are two Yanmar 3YM20 (21 hp) and the 3YM30C is the charter upgrade, which the boats for the Moorings fleet got. On an ex-charter boat, check the plate anyway. |
| Saildrive | Volvo Penta × 21,2Mk I with the D1-30, 2005 to mid 2006 | — | The builder does not name the drive model; read the plate on the leg. |
| Saildrive | Yanmar × 25,8Mk I from late 2006, and Mk II | Yanmar SD20/SD50 saildrive operation manual (2009) | The builder does not name the drive model. Yanmar paired the 3YM20 and 3YM30 with the SD20 and, from 2014, with the SD25; read the plate on the leg. |
| Propeller | Brunton11,2,5,8Mk II option (October 2014 option list): folding propellers; standard on both versions are fixed two-blade propellers | — | |
| Winches | Lewmar 48 CST × 2, 40 CST × 21,3,5Mk I: two-speed self-tailing winches, the 48s at the helm for main and genoa sheets, the 40s on the mast for halyards and reefs | Lewmar Ocean & EVO winches Parts & service page | Sizes from the February 2005 Moorings sheet, the make from the Leopard brochure. The 2006 and 2009 sheets list two halyard and two primary winches without sizes. |
| Windlass | 1000 W · 12 V1,2,5Mk I: horizontal electric windlass with hand-held remote, make not named | — | Wired to work only with an engine running and protected by its own deck hatch; the 2005 sheet adds that it can also hoist the mainsail. |
| Windlass | 1000 W · 10 mm8,10,11Mk II: vertical windlass with 10 mm chain gypsy and hand-held remote, make not named | — | Option in 2014: a foot switch for ‘up’. |
| Furler | Profurl1,2,5,8,11Mk I, in the 2006 and 2009 sheets (2005: furler without make); the Mk II lists give a genoa furler without make | — | Mk II option in 2014: bowsprit with furler and Code 0. |
| Steering | Lewmar8,9,2,5Mk II: chain-and-wire steering with bulkhead steering unit and brake, JP3 self-aligning rudder bearings, balanced spade rudders | — | The Mk I (2006 and 2009 sheets) also has chain-and-wire steering with a bulkhead unit, brake and stainless emergency tiller, make not named. |
| Fridge | 220 l · 12 V1,2,5Mk I: two-door front-opening fridge/freezer, make not named (2006 and 2009 sheets; 2005: 12 V fridge with two compartments) | — | |
| Fridge | Vitrifrigo · 212 l · 12 V6,8,10Mk II: two-drawer front-opening fridge/freezer | — | Named in the 2015 Leopard brochure and in the Moorings 4000 lists. |
| Stove | ENO6,8,1,2Mk II: three-burner gas hob with oven | — | The Mk I has a two-burner gas stove with oven and grill, make not named. Both have a gas solenoid valve switched at the panel, with a warning light at the cooker. |
| Batteries | 3 + 2 AGM1,2,5Mk I: three house batteries and one starter battery per engine; AGM in the 2006 and 2009 sheets | — | |
| Batteries | 2 × 210 Ah + 2 × 100 Ah8,11,10Mk II: two 210 Ah deep-cycle lead-acid house batteries and two 100 Ah lead-acid starter batteries | — | AGM and a third 210 Ah house battery were options (2014) and Moorings upgrades. |
| Charger | 40 A1,2,5Mk I, standard in the Moorings 4000 sheets, make not named | — | |
| Charger | Victron Centaur 12/408,9,10,11Mk II, boats for the Moorings fleet (2015 list; the 2016 lists give a 60 A charger); an extra on private boats (2014 option list) | — | |

Good to know
- Two different boats carry the name. The 2005–2009 Leopard 40 (Morrelli & Melvin) has the galley aft facing the cockpit and a 6.13 m beam; the one launched in December 2014 (Simonis Voogd) has the galley forward with a door onto the foredeck and a 6.72 m beam. They share little beyond the name, so say which one you have when you order parts.3,6
- The Mk I engines changed during production: Volvo Penta D1-30 up to the August 2006 Moorings sheet, Yanmar 29 hp from the December 2006 sheet (which still prints ‘Yanmar D1-30’) and 30 hp in 2009. Read the engine plate before ordering filters, impellers or belts.2,4,5
- Mk I: you reach the engine rooms from outside through two large deck hatches. The 2005 sheet lists a Racor 500FG fuel filter/water separator on each engine and two 22 l water heaters heated by the engines’ heat exchangers.1
- Mk I: the builder designed the keels as replaceable units and fitted collision bulkheads in the bows. Worth knowing at a survey after a grounding.3
- Mk II equipment varies a lot between sister ships. On the base boat of the October 2014 option list, charger, inverter, AGM batteries, solar panels, electric toilets, davits, stackpack and a hot stern shower were all extras. Boats for the Moorings fleet got 3YM30C engines instead of 3YM20, AGM batteries, electric toilets, a 6 kW Northern Lights genset, air conditioning, two 70 W solar panels, davits and a Raymarine package. Check which list fits the boat in front of you.11,8
- The builder’s owner’s manual is not a download on leopardcatamarans.com: the owners’ page points to the Leopard Catamarans Owner app (by Boatclick), which holds the owner’s manual and the equipment makers’ documents for each model.16
