Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40

The Lucia 40 is an 11.73 m cruising catamaran by Fountaine Pajot, drawn by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design and built at the yard in Aigrefeuille near La Rochelle. Developed in 2015 as the ‘New 40’, it was unveiled at the Paris boat show in December 2015 and sold as the yard’s new model for 2016, its 40th catamaran model in its 40th year; it replaced the Lipari 41 and was itself replaced by the Isla 40 in 2020. It came as the three-cabin Maestro, with the owner’s suite in the starboard hull, or the four-cabin Quatuor, with two to four bathrooms depending on the layout, and with two Volvo 20 hp saildrive diesels as standard and 2 × 30 hp as an option. Fountaine Pajot publishes no owner’s manual online; the most detailed builder document still reachable is the archived standard inventory of June 2015, and documentation and spare parts go through the builder’s owner’s requests form with the hull number.

Manuals & documents

Fountaine Pajot publishes no owner’s manual for the Lucia 40: owners ask for documentation through the builder’s request form or its extranet login (the first two links). Most other links are archived copies of the builder’s own pages and PDFs from 2015 to 2020, which it has since taken down; the boat tests describe single test boats, not the standard specification. We host nothing.

Equipment & its manuals

Standard equipment as the builder’s documents list it. Boats were ordered with options and refitted since — check what is actually aboard.

ItemModelManual / pageNote
EngineVolvo Penta 20 hp × 21,2,3,4,5,6Standard on all boats: ‘2 × 20 HP sail drive engines’ in the June 2015 inventory, ‘Volvo 2 × 20 CV’ in the 2016 brochureVolvo Penta D1-30 Parts & service pageFountaine Pajot gives the make and power but no model. Volvo Penta’s 20 hp saildrive diesel of those years is the D1-20, which our D1-30 page covers too; read the engine plate before ordering filters, impellers or belts. Inventory: heat-exchanger cooling, raw-water filter, complete engine panel with dual controls and hour meter at the helm, sound-insulated engine rooms under deck hatches.
EngineVolvo Penta 30 hp × 27,8,4,5,6,9Option: ‘Option Power 2 × 30 HP’ on the builder’s pages from November 2016 to January 2020; the 2016 test boats of SAIL (hull 2) and Multihulls World (hull 4) had itVolvo Penta D1-30 Parts & service pageThe builder’s pages give only the power. Multihulls World describes the test boat’s optional engines as 30 hp Volvos with three cylinders and 1100 cm³, 158 kg each with the saildrive, mounted aft of the rudders: that fits Volvo Penta’s D1-30. 48° North called its 2017 test boat’s optional engines Yanmar, so read the plate.
SaildriveSaildrive × 21,4,5All boats (‘sail drive engines’, June 2015 inventory); make and type of the legs not named—Read the plate on each leg before ordering seals, anodes or a propeller.
PropellerFixed blade × 21,4,5Standard, June 2015 inventory; number of blades and size not given. Three-blade folding propellers were an option, priced differently for the 20 and the 30 hp engines (Multihulls World, 2016)—Because the list prices the folding propellers separately for each engine size, check which engine and propeller are fitted before buying a spare.
Fuel filterPre-filter/separator + engine filter1For each engine, June 2015 inventory—One 300 l tank filled through a deck plate with an anti-overflow fitting, electric gauge on the 12 V panel, fuel shut-off valves.
Alternators115 A / 12 V × 21Engine alternators, June 2015 inventory—
BatteriesAGM 345 Ah + AGM 50 Ah1,4,5,6June 2015 inventory: a port bank of AGM service/engine batteries (345 Ah) and one 50 Ah AGM engine battery to starboard—Charging relay and a manual emergency link between the banks; 12 V panel at the chart table with circuit breakers and a voltmeter for the service batteries. The tests describe the service bank on a raised shelf in the engine room, with labelled battery switches.
Winches45 ST × 2 · 40 ST1,6,10,4,5June 2015 inventory: two self-tailing size 45 winches for the genoa sheets and halyards, one self-tailing size 40 for the mainsheet and traveller, all at the helmLewmar Ocean & EVO winches Parts & service pageThe inventory names no maker; SAIL’s 2016 test describes three Lewmar winches with Antal rope clutches, Voile Magazine’s 2017 test three Lewmar 45s. One electric winch was part of the optional Offshore pack (Multihulls World, 2016); SAIL’s test boat had more than one. Check the drum before ordering parts.
Windlass1000 W1,4,5,6Electric windlass with circuit-breaker protection in the June 2015 inventory. Multihulls World’s 2016 price list puts it in the optional Offshore equipment pack, so a boat without that pack may not have it.—SAIL’s 2016 test names a Quick vertical windlass in the foredeck locker, without the model. Fairlead with built-in bridle under the bridge deck and a roller on the forward beam; the inventory lists no anchor or chain.
Mast & riggingZ-Diffusion1,4,5,9Anodised aluminium mast and boom with complete standing rigging (June 2015 inventory, no maker named); Multihulls World’s 2016 test names a Z-Diffusion mast with one set of triangulated spreaders—Ball-bearing mainsail luff cars, three reef lines with an automatic first reef, lazy jacks, boom topping lift, genoa and spinnaker halyards on clutches. 48° North (2017): swept spreaders, diamond stays, no backstay.
SailsFull-batten main · genoa1,4,5,9,6June 2015 inventory: full-batten mainsail and a genoa with UV strip; sailmaker not named—A square-top mainsail with ball-bearing batten cars came with the optional Offshore pack (Multihulls World, 2016); 48° North (2017) describes a square-top main and a 110 % genoa. A composite bowsprit and a gennaker or Code 0 were options.
FurlerRoller furler1,4,5Roller genoa furler in the June 2015 inventory; make not named. Multihulls World’s 2016 price list puts it in the optional Offshore equipment pack, so a boat without that pack may not have it.—
SteeringWheel · 2 rudders1,6,4,5,9June 2015 inventory: leather-covered wheel at the raised starboard helm, two rudders linked mechanically by tiller arms and a transverse tube, emergency tiller, steering compass—The wheel works the rudders through metal cables (Multihulls World 2016, 48° North 2017). An autopilot ram, where fitted, acts on the rudder link through an offset arm in the engine room (Multihulls World).
ToiletManual WC × 2–41,2,4,5One manual toilet in each bathroom (2, 3 or 4 depending on the layout), June 2015 inventory; make not named—In the Maestro owner’s suite the WC has its own compartment, separate from the shower room. The inventory lists one holding tank; Multihulls World’s 2016 price list puts a black-water tank in the optional Offshore pack.
Water pumpElectric + accumulator1June 2015 inventory: one electric fresh-water pump with pressure accumulator; make not named—
Water heater24 l1June 2015 inventory; make not named—
Bilge pumpElectric 2 m³/h × 4 + manual1June 2015 inventory: one electric bilge pump in each engine room and one in each hull (2 m³/h each), plus a manual pump worked from outside—
Fridge144 l drawers, 12 V1,6June 2015 inventory: 144 l of 12 V refrigerated drawers in the galley—SAIL’s 2016 test names Vitrifrigo drawers.
StoveGas, 3 burners1,6,4,5June 2015 inventory: stainless hob with three gas burners and pan holders; no oven listed—The 2016 test boats had an oven as well; SAIL names a three-burner Eno hob and a separate oven at counter height. The gas locker is in the foredeck next to the anchor locker (inventory).
DavitsDavits × 21,4,5Two tender davits in the June 2015 inventory. Multihulls World’s 2016 price list puts them in the optional Offshore equipment pack.—
GeneratorNorthern Lights6Option, in the port engine room (SAIL, 2016); model and power not given—
InstrumentsGarmin (option)1,4,5,6No navigation electronics in the June 2015 standard inventory, only an instrument console at the chart table, an instrument panel at the helm and a VHF antenna at the masthead. Multihulls World’s 2016 price list offers a ‘Garmin 1’ electronics pack—The pack contents are not listed. SAIL’s 2016 test boat for the US had a Raymarine multifunction display at the helm instead (model not named), so check what is fitted before ordering parts.
Solar panels3 × 100 W (option)4,5Option in Multihulls World’s 2016 price list—
Watermaker60 l/h (option)4,5Option in Multihulls World’s 2016 price list; make not named—
HeaterHulls + saloon (option)4,5Heating for the hulls and the saloon, an option in Multihulls World’s 2016 price list; make and type not named—
Hatches & portsGoiot escape hatches11,4,5Lucia 40s built up to 31 August 2018 are in Fountaine Pajot’s Goiot escape-hatch recall, which covers its boats under 50 ft built from 1 January 2012 to 31 August 2018—The glazing could come away from the frame. Fountaine Pajot told owners not to sail until its reinforcement kit was fitted and then supplied new hatches; Goiot’s hatches from September 2018 have a screw in the middle of the frame top. The two large opening saloon hatches are Lewmar (Multihulls World, 2016).
LightsLED1June 2015 inventory: LED spotlights and reading lights inside, waterproof LED spots in the cockpit, navigation, steaming and anchor lights and deck lighting—

Good to know

  • Fountaine Pajot publishes no owner’s manual or equipment list for the Lucia 40 online. For technical documentation or spare parts, use its owner’s requests form, which still lists the Lucia 40, and give the hull (HIN) number; the builder says an expert for your area answers. The most detailed builder document still reachable is the June 2015 standard inventory of the ‘New 40’ on archive.org.20,1
  • Lucia 40s built up to 31 August 2018 are in Fountaine Pajot’s recall of Goiot escape hatches, whose glazing could come off the frame. The builder told owners not to sail before its reinforcement kit was fitted, and then supplied new hatches. When buying or surveying a boat of those years, ask for proof that both steps were done; if in doubt, ask Fountaine Pajot with the hull number.11,20
  • The equipment of a Lucia 40 depends on its packs. The June 2015 inventory, titled ‘New 40 Grand Large’, lists a 1000 W windlass, genoa furler, davits and a holding tank, but Multihulls World’s 2016 price list puts these, plus a square-top mainsail and one electric winch, into an optional Offshore equipment pack; electronics, watermaker, solar panels, heating and folding propellers were further options. Check what a given boat actually has before ordering parts.1,4,5
  • Engines: 2 × 20 hp Volvo as standard, 2 × 30 hp as an option. The builder’s brochure names Volvo only for the standard engines; Multihulls World’s 2016 test boat had three-cylinder 30 hp Volvos, but one US test (48° North, 2017) called its boat’s 30 hp engines Yanmar. Read the plates on the engines and saildrive legs before ordering filters, impellers, anodes or a propeller.2,7,4,5,9
  • In 2019 Volvo Penta fitted one Lucia 40 with a twin electric saildrive prototype and showed it at Cannes: 2 × 15 kW of propulsion, 2 × 20 kWh of batteries, two 7.2 kW generators, 2 × 5 kW chargers and adapted EVC2 controls. Volvo Penta called it a prototype on a demo boat, and the builder’s Lucia 40 pages never listed an electric version, so a Lucia 40 for sale normally has diesel saildrives.21,22,8
  • Order sails by the inventory and the builder’s pages: mainsail 58 m², genoa 37 m². Some pages of the 2016 brochure swap the two labels and show a 58 m² genoa and a 37 m² mainsail.1,2,3
