Bavaria 36
Bavaria Yachtbau in Giebelstadt, Germany, has used the name for three different aft-cockpit sailing yachts, and this page covers all of them. The first Bavaria 36 of the late 1990s is 11.55 m long and has a Volvo Penta MD2030; by 2002 it had been replaced by a new 11.40 m boat with a Volvo Penta MD2020 saildrive and two or three cabins, which was reworked for 2004 (heavier, with a 150 l fuel tank) and sold in North America as the 36 Cruiser with the MD2030. The Cruiser 36 listed from 2010 to 2013 is a third, unrelated design of 11.30 m with a Volvo Penta D1-20 saildrive, or a D1-30 at extra cost. Hulls, rigs and engines differ, so check which boat you have before ordering parts.

Good to know
- Read the engine plate before you order: Bavaria fitted a Volvo Penta MD2030 to the 11.55 m boat and to the US 36 Cruiser, an MD2020 to the German-spec boats of 2002–2004, and a D1-20 or D1-30 to the Cruiser 36.1,13,2,5,7
- Bavaria’s lists only say ‘with saildrive’ and never name the drive model, so take type and serial number from the plate on the leg before you order oil seals, anodes or a propeller.3,5
- The 11.40 m boats were built with a cast-iron keel or, as an option, a 1.95 m lead deep keel; find out which one yours has before ordering keel-bolt parts or booking a lift.3,4,2
- The 2002–2005 boats left the yard with a small electrical system: one 55 Ah engine battery and one 140 Ah house battery, and no charger on the German lists (US boats had a charger and 110 V shore power). Expect owner-fitted chargers and extra batteries on a used boat.3,2
- On the Cruiser 36 the Raymarine package (ST70 Tridata, SPX 10 autopilot, C90W plotter), the electric windlass, the heater, the boiler and the D1-30 were all options; do not assume a used boat has them.7,9
- Bavaria sells original spare parts through its partner SVB and through its dealers; have the hull number, or the model and year of build, ready.17
