Volvo Penta MD2030

The MD2030 is the three-cylinder, 0.95-litre member of Volvo Penta’s MD2010/2020/2030/2040 family of freshwater-cooled diesels — a very common auxiliary in production sailing yachts of the 1990s and early 2000s. It was sold with a small reverse gear for shaft drive or with a saildrive (120S on the early versions, 130S or MS25S on the D). Four versions exist (A, B, C, D) with slightly different oil and coolant volumes; oil and fuel filter, belt, thermostat and the current raw water pump stay the same across them. This page also covers its siblings, built in the same four versions: the two-cylinder MD2010 (0.45 l), the three-cylinder MD2020 (0.68 l) and the larger three-cylinder MD2040 (1.5 l). Impeller kit, cover gasket, pump repair kit, fuel filter and glow plugs (by version) fit all four; oil filter, thermostat and raw water pump split the family into MD2010/MD2020 and MD2030/MD2040, and the MD2030 and MD2040 each have their own V-belt — the parts list names the engine for every number. The D1-30 took over the MD2030’s role.

Hours or time, whichever comes first. The C version instruction book is the reference; where the A/B or D books differ, it says so. The books give one schedule for all four engines, so it applies to the MD2010, MD2020 and MD2040 as well.

Find out which raw water pump you have before ordering an impeller: a round end cover points to the early Jabsco-type pump, a cover with one flat side to the later Johnson-type pump (3593654 on the MD2010/MD2020, 3593655 on the MD2030/MD2040); both take kit 22222936.^61,62,6,3
Before ordering, check which engine you have: MD2010 and MD2020 take oil filter 861473, belt 973534 and the 75 °C thermostat 861911; MD2030 and MD2040 take oil filter 3840525 and the 82 °C thermostat 3580365, with belt 978482 (MD2030) or 978710 (MD2040). Fuel filter 861477 and impeller kit 22222936 fit all four.⁵
When fitting an impeller, grease the pump housing and the inside of the cover lightly with waterproof rubber grease, push the impeller in with a clockwise twist and always use a new cover gasket. Carry a spare impeller aboard.^35,44
Spin a new oil or fuel filter on by hand until the seal touches, then another half turn. After a fuel filter change, bleed the system with the hand pump.⁴³
Belt tension is right when you can press the belt down about 10 mm between the pulleys with your thumb; check it warm and again a few hours after fitting a new belt.³⁵
The D version manual warns never to mix oil types in the MS10/MS15 reverse gear: top up with whatever is already in it, engine oil or ATF.⁴⁴
