Dehler 38

The Dehler 38 is an 11.30 m (11.64 m overall) performance cruiser drawn by judel/vrolijk & co and built by Dehler, a brand of HanseYachts AG, in Greifswald: it was shown at boot Düsseldorf in January 2013 as the first Dehler built entirely by Hanse after the yard moved from Freienohl, and in July 2020 the builder presented the 38 SQ, developed from the 38, as its successor. It was sold with an aluminium rig or, in Competition trim, a taller carbon rig, and with three keels: standard, shallow 1.60 m and a cast-iron and lead T-keel of 2.20–2.24 m; the builder’s figures change between the list of August 2013 (standard keel 2.00 m, 7.1 t) and the later brochure, sail plans and lists (L-keel 2.03 m, 7.5 t). Only the 2013 list names the engine, a Volvo Penta D1-30 of 28 hp on a saildrive; tests in 2013 name the D2-40 as the option, while later lists say just ‘diesel approx. 29 hp’ or 39 hp, so the engine plate decides. Six self-tailing winches were standard — Harken on the first boats tested in 2013, Lewmar 40 and 45 Race in every list from August 2013 — and the owner’s manual came with the boat; owners get the documents through the HanseYachts owners area.

Manuals & documents

Dehler publishes no owner’s manual for the 38: it is part of the delivery (the 2020 list names it), and HanseYachts’ owners area, where you choose Dehler and enter the CE code or Sentinel ID, has the manuals of the installed equipment, technical documents, wiring plans and drawings. The links go to the builder’s document server (the specification valid from 13 March 2020, the brochure, the 2017 sail plans, layouts, stability curves and ORC speed guides), to its legacy model page and press release, to archived versions of the Dehler website from 2014, 2019 and 2020, and to magazine tests that the builder itself hosts. The specification of 1 August 2013 was listed on the archived 2014 page but is no longer in the builder’s download list; a copy on a Swedish broker’s site serves only as a source in the tables. We host no documents.

Good to know

  • Dehler’s figures depend on the date of the document. The list of 1 August 2013 gives a 2.00 m T-keel as standard, 7.10 t, 300 l of water and a fixed 2-blade propeller; the later brochure, the June 2017 sail plans and the list of 13 March 2020 give a 2.03 m L-keel, 7.50 t, 295 l and a folding propeller. Go by the build year and the CE plate before you compare adverts or order a keel-related part.1,26,5,6
  • Only the 2013 list names the engine (Volvo Penta D1-30, 28 hp); later lists say ‘diesel approx. 29 hp’ with a 39 hp option, and the 2013 tests name the Volvo Penta D2-40 as that option. Volvo’s manual covers both engines with the 130S saildrive. Photograph the plates on the engine and the leg, then take filters, impellers, seals and anodes from Volvo Penta for exactly those types.1,6,11,2,4,12
  • Count and identify the winches before buying service kits: tests of the first boats in spring 2013 report Harken, while every builder list from 1 August 2013 names six Lewmar Race winches (40 and 45), and the Competition Package of 2019/2020 had 45 and 50 Race Plus. Lewmar builds the Race winches on its EVO series.2,20,19,1,6,11,17
  • Competition boats differ below and aloft: a cast-iron fin with lead bulb (2.20 m in 2013, 2.24 m later), a carbon mast, boom and kicker by Pauger with rod rigging and a 0.73 m taller mast, and a competition rudder. Check which version you have before ordering standing rigging, sails or rudder bearings.1,6,26,11,2,25
  • The owner’s manual came with the boat but is not public. In HanseYachts’ owners area, choose Dehler and register with the CE code or Sentinel ID to get the manuals of the installed equipment, wiring plans and drawings; the drawings, layouts and the 2020 specification are also free on Dehler’s legacy-model page.6,27,38
  • Three boats share the name: the Dehler 38 of 1985, this judel/vrolijk design of 2013–2020 with twin wheels, and the 38 SQ from 2020, which keeps the hull and keels but has a fixed bowsprit, larger hull windows, a different rig (17.70 m above the waterline, square-top main as an option) and Quantum sails. Sails, rigging and deck parts of the SQ do not automatically fit the 38.39,30,37,6
