B&G Zeus 3 / 3S / S

The Zeus3, Zeus3S and Zeus S are B&G’s chartplotters for sailing yachts: built-in GPS, Wi-Fi and sonar, NMEA 2000 and Ethernet for B&G instruments and HALO radar, and sailing tools such as SailSteer, laylines, SailingTime, a start-line race panel and B&G autopilot control. The Zeus3 of late 2016 (7, 9, 12 and 16 in) pairs a touchscreen with a rotary knob and keypad and runs on 12 or 24 V; in 2020 the Zeus3S took over the 9, 12 and 16 in in the same housings with a faster processor, while the Zeus3 7 stayed on sale, and both share bezels, dash kits and brackets with Simrad’s NSS evo3. The Zeus S of January 2023 (7, 9 and 12 in) is a touch-only redesign on B&G’s NEON software with C-MAP DISCOVER X and REVEAL X charts, 12 V only and its own mounting parts, some of them shared with the Simrad NSX. The Zeus S Ultrawide, the Glass Helm versions, the Zeus SR and SRX and the older Zeus2 are separate products and not covered here.

Zeus3 and Zeus3S check online for updates from the system settings; the Zeus S downloads updates by itself over Wi-Fi or through the B&G app. Otherwise copy the file to a memory card that is not a chart card. Good to know

  • Tell the generations apart before you buy parts. Zeus3 (2016) and Zeus3S (2020) look alike, with a rotary knob and keypad, and share sun covers, edge bezels, dash kits and brackets size for size; there is no Zeus3S 7. The Zeus S (2023) is touch-only with a single power key and has its own sun covers, dash kits and corner clips with 000-158xx numbers; the dash kits and corner clips are shared with the Simrad NSX, which has its own page here.7,14,25,71
  • On a 24 V boat the Zeus3 and Zeus3S run directly on 12 or 24 V (10–31.2 V), but the Zeus S is 12 V only (10–17 V): a Zeus S that replaces a Zeus3 there needs a DC-DC converter. The NMEA 2000 backbone always needs its own 12 V feed.14,1,42
  • Charts do not carry over between generations. The Zeus S reads only C-MAP DISCOVER X and REVEAL X, which C-MAP sells for NEON displays, while the Zeus3 and Zeus3S use the earlier C-MAP cards and Navionics: a chart card from a Zeus3 or Zeus3S will not work in a Zeus S. Chart card numbers depend on the region, which is why none are listed here: go by the card’s label and region. Never copy updates or backups to a chart card; use a separate microSD.87,77,1
  • ForwardScan plugs straight into Sonar 2 (black nut) of a Zeus3 or Zeus3S; the Zeus S installation manual does not list it. Keep the blanking plug 000-12230-001 and a spare O-ring kit 000-12232-001 on board so you can pull the transducer and seal the sleeve.63,67,69,14
  • Wiring: leave the yellow wire unconnected to switch on with the power key, join it to red after the fuse to start as soon as there is power, or take it to the ignition. The Zeus3 and Zeus3S also have a VIDEO socket for NMEA 0183 and two cameras through cable 000-00129-001, which the Zeus S lacks. The Zeus3S 16 ships without a bracket (000-13760-001).42
  • Zeus S updates are over 1 GB: use a strong Wi-Fi link or the B&G app, or copy the .upd file to the root of a microSD card; on a Mac, stop Safari from unpacking the file. If the boat shows up off the coast of Africa after the update, set Settings > Boat network > Sources > Auto select all sources, then switch the whole system off and on again.62
