Seawind 1160

The Seawind 1160 is an 11.6 m cruising catamaran from Seawind Catamarans, the Australian builder founded by Richard Ward: launched at the Sydney boat show in 2004 with Seawind’s tri-folding door between cockpit and saloon, built in the Illawarra near Wollongong (New South Wales) until production moved to the Corsair Marine plant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in 2011–2012, and launched “well over 150” times by the yard’s count. Up to 2014 every 1160 had two 29 hp Yanmar diesels with saildrives (the first specification of 2005 also allowed Volvo); in 2014 Seawind added the lighter 1160 Lite with two 20 hp Honda outboards on power tilt in wells under the helm seats (25 hp Yamahas as an option, the Yanmar diesels as an option from 2018 at the latest), listed the diesel boat as the 1160 Deluxe from 2015, and since 2016 has built the 1160 Resort for day charter, with two 25 hp Yamaha outboards and room for 43 passengers. In 2025 the 1160XL, with a wider and reshaped hull, took over from the Lite and the Deluxe while the Resort is still built; the 39 ft Seawind 1170 of 2023 is a separate design. Seawind publishes no owner’s manual online and its equipment lists name makes only up to 2010, so check what is on board before you order parts.

Manuals & documents

Seawind publishes no owner’s manual for the 1160 online, and its current website covers only the 1160 Resort and the 1160XL: the specifications of 2005 to 2010, the Lite brochure of 2014 and the Lite and Deluxe lists of 2019 to 2024 are linked as archived copies of seawindcats.com. Service, warranty and repair enquiries go through Seawind’s Request Service form or a Seawind dealer; the boat tests come from sailing magazines. We host no manuals or drawings.

EngineYanmar 29 hp saildrive diesel × 21,2,3,4,5,6,7Standard on every 1160 up to 2014 and on the 1160 Deluxe to 2024 (spec books 2007 and 2010: “2 × 29hp Yanmar”, “twin Yanmar 30hp saildrive”; Deluxe pages 2019 and 2024); option on the Lite from 2018 at the latest; the first specification of 2005 reads “Yanmar (or Volvo)”—Seawind gives only the output. In Yanmar’s range of these years the 29 hp saildrive engine is the 3YM30 (3YM30AE from about 2014), which our page covers; read the engine plate before ordering. Good to know

  • There are three drive set-ups, so find out which one you have before ordering parts: two 29 hp Yanmar diesels with saildrives on every 1160 up to 2014 and on the Deluxe, two 20 hp Honda or 25 hp Yamaha outboards on the Lite, and a Lite with the Yanmar diesels, which Seawind offered from 2018 at the latest; the Resort has 25 hp Yamahas. Seawind’s lists give only the output, so go by the engine plate and the plate on each saildrive or outboard bracket.3,4,9,6,7,14
  • Many 1160s went into charter fleets in the Whitsundays and Thailand, and the charter pack Trade-A-Boat listed in 2009 changed a lot of the standard equipment: survey construction, a second anchor, a 240 V charger, two 125 W solar panels, electric toilets instead of the manual ones, a deck wash, Raymarine instruments with a C80 display and davits; the test boat also had fixed instead of folding propellers. On an ex-charter boat, go by what is fitted, not by the spec book.8,13
  • Practical Sailor found the wheel of the 1160 it tested in 2006 hard to turn even with little load on the rudders, and Seawind then reworked the steering with pull-pull cables to cut friction. Both wheels are linked to the rudders independently, so on an older boat check each helm for stiffness and the cables for wear.19,2
  • On the Lite the outboards sit in wells under the helm seats with 5-inch leg extensions against cavitation, so a replacement engine needs the same 20-inch shaft plus the extension. The rev counter is inside the well, and the small charging output of the outboards led Trade-A-Boat to suggest more solar or a third house battery; from 2023 Seawind lists two 125 W panels with a 40 A regulator as standard.6,10,12
  • On the diesel boats the Yanmars sit aft in each hull; Practical Sailor found the access tight on its 2006 test boat, with the dipstick reached through a panel in the head. Routine service starts at the external raw-water strainer and the Racor-type primary fuel filter fitted to each engine.19,8,3
  • Seawind publishes no owner’s manual for the 1160 online, and its current website no longer has the Lite and Deluxe pages. Service, warranty and repair questions go through the Request Service form on seawindcats.com or a Seawind dealer; the knowledge hub on the owner pages is still marked “coming soon”, and the same pages link Seawind’s official owners’ group.26,27,28
