Profurl furling systems

Profurl is the French furler brand that built its first headsail furler in 1980 under the ProEngin name and has belonged to the Wichard group since 2002. Its current manual cruising range runs from the C260 for boats of about 5 m through the C290, C320, C350, C420, C430, C480 and C520 to the C530 for boats up to 26 m; the number roughly gives the foil diameter (C320 = 32 mm). The older Classic/Elite (NC, LC) and Basic ranges still have manuals and drawings online, while the R racing series is only pointed to here. Drum and halyard swivel run on 100C6 steel ball bearings in a sealed grease bath, so apart from a yearly fresh-water rinse they need no maintenance, and WD-40 on the seals ruins them. Since December 2021 the swivel and drum kits of the C290 to C430 also carry an N number with the same digits as the old P number (N250020 for P250020), and dealers list either.

Good to know

  • Halyard wrap is the classic furler failure. Fit the Wrapstop right under the top terminal, drilled 1 mm under the wire diameter with its large side facing forward, and hoist so the top of the swivel ends 5–10 cm below the top of the foil. Check that height again with every new or re-cut sail; if the swivel sits much lower, have the luff corrected rather than living with it.1
  • Keep WD-40 and similar sprays off the drum and swivel seals: they destroy the seals and then the bearings, and fresh water is all these sealed parts need. If the furler gets hard to turn, Profurl’s first suspect is undersized turning blocks, so fit bigger ones before you blame the bearings.1
  • Foil joints: assemble the sections on a flat, clean surface, put the supplied threadlocker on dry threads, tighten the set screws to 4–5 N·m at most and let it cure 24 h above 5 °C. Do not re-tighten them later, and don’t let the long foil bend when you lift it aboard.1
  • Drum line: use the line size Profurl gives for your model, load the drum by hand so the sail’s UV strip ends up outside, and keep a little brake on the line when unfurling. If it jams, check the first lead block (it should meet the drum at 90° at mid height), a line that is too thick, an overfilled drum (furl tighter and take off spare turns) and the lead through the cage.1
  • Before you order spares, note the model, the forestay and clevis-pin diameter and the serial number: many kits depend on the forestay as well as the model (C420 with 10 or 12.7 mm, C520 with 16 or 19 mm). When the furler comes down, have the forestay checked too; Profurl puts its average life at about ten years.1
  • Not covered on this page: the R racing furlers (R250 to R480, older R25 to R42), the motorised NDE2/NDH2 and the NEX and Spinex furlers for flying sails.
