Catana 47

Catana has sold two different catamarans as the Catana 47, both designed by Christophe Barreau, built in Canet-en-Roussillon in the south of France and fitted with twin daggerboards. The first appears on a yard spec sheet of November 2004: it has the Catana 471’s hull length, waterline and beam (14.30 m, 13.80 m, 7.70 m) and came as a standard 47 with 2 × 40 hp or as the 47 Ocean Class with a bowsprit, two 55 hp Volvo D2-55 diesels and 800 l tanks; by January 2009 Catana listed it among its previous models. The second, announced in 2009 as the new 47 and successor to the 471, is 14.03 m long and 7.64 m wide with two 40 hp saildrive diesels, and from 2011 it was built in carbon-and-Twaron infusion, which Catana says saved almost 700 kg. It came with three cabins (owner’s version) or four, as a 30th Anniversary edition in 2014 and as the 47 Easy in 2017, and was still in Catana’s range in September 2020. Catana publishes no owner’s manual online, so give the hull number (HIN) and build year when you order parts, sails or canvas.

Manuals & documents

Catana publishes no owner’s manual for either Catana 47: owners ask through the builder’s after-sales form with their hull number (first link). Most other links are archived copies of Catana’s own pages and PDFs from 2004 to 2020, which cover two different boats sold under the same name; the boat tests each describe one test boat, not the standard specification. We host nothing.

EngineVolvo Penta D2-55 × 21,2,347 Ocean Class: ‘2 VOLVO D2 In-Board 55 HP diesel engines’ with saildrives in the A-2006 specification (November 2005); 2 × 55 hp on the sheet of November 2004Volvo Penta D2-55 Parts & service pageCatana gives no version letter. As our D2-55 page shows, versions A and B drive an MS25S saildrive and C to E a 130S, so read the engine plate before ordering saildrive parts. The engines are sound-proofed and fully separate from the accommodation, under teak-slatted deck hatches; two engine panels with alarms, controls at the starboard helm.

New Catana 47 (2009–2020): 2 × 40 hp on every yard page and brochure, ‘2 x 40 cv saildrive’ on the 2019–2020 page; Catana names no maker for either—SAIL’s 2012 test boat, a new 47, had 40 hp Volvo saildrive diesels. Volvo Penta’s 40 hp saildrive diesel of those years is the D2-40, but that is our inference, not Catana’s: read the plate before ordering filters, impellers or belts.
SaildriveSaildrive × 21,2,6,7Both generations: ‘2 Saildrive transmission systems’ on the 47 Ocean Class (A-2006), saildrives on the new 47 (yard page 2019–2020); Catana does not name the leg—

Good to know

  • Two different boats are sold as ‘Catana 47’. The first (from 2004: 14.30 m hull, 7.70 m beam, 15.70 m overall as Ocean Class) keeps the 471’s dimensions, and Catana’s own site filed it under ‘Catana 471 / 472’ in 2009; the second (from 2009: 14.03 m hull, 7.64 m beam) is a new design. Check which one you have before ordering sails, canvas, hatches or daggerboard parts, and give the build year and hull number (HIN).3,22,13,4
  • Catana publishes no owner’s manual for either Catana 47. Ask through the after-sales form on catana.com (‘Technical – After Sales’, hull number required). The most detailed builder document still reachable is the A-2006 specification of the 47 Ocean Class on archive.org; the 2012 ‘Descriptif’ PDF of the new 47, linked from Catana’s pages at the time, is not on archive.org, so ask Catana for the equipment list of your hull.27,1,10
  • Engines: the 47 Ocean Class came with Volvo D2-55s (A-2006); check the version letter on the plate, because Volvo changed the saildrive from the MS25S (D2-55 A and B) to the 130S (C onwards). For the 40 hp engines of the standard 47 and the new 47, Catana gives only the power; SAIL’s 2012 test boat had Volvo saildrives. Read the plates before ordering filters, impellers, anodes or propellers.1,2,7
  • Early and later new 47s differ inside and in the laminate. Catana introduced a new saloon layout from hull no. 7 in 2010 (chart table facing the sea, more galley storage, a desk in the owner’s companionway), and according to Cruising World six boats were built before carbon infusion became standard in 2011. Check the hull number before ordering cushions, tables or interior parts.14,11,26
  • When you view a 47 Ocean Class, use the A-2006 specification as an inventory list: Volvo D2-55s, Lewmar winches, Profurl furlers, a Spectra watermaker, KOK refrigeration, Sonnenschein batteries and a Raymarine radar/plotter were standard. The English and French editions differ in a few lines: solar 4 × 80 W or 4 × 100 W, mooring lines 4 × 15 m or 4 × 10 m, eight or seven 220 V sockets.1,2
  • The CatanaCats group on groups.io is where Catana owners of all models meet (about 790 members). Membership needs the moderators’ approval, and the message archive and wiki are for members only; ask there about other owners’ experience with daggerboards, rig and systems.28
