Harken Radial & Classic winches

Harken’s Radial winches are the sheet and halyard winches on a great many cruising and racing yachts built since 2009; the drum has diagonal ribs instead of an abrasive surface and runs on roller bearings. The size number is the power-ratio class, ‘.2’ means two-speed and ‘.3’ three-speed, ST self-tailing; the last letter gives the drum finish (A aluminium, C chrome, CCC all-chrome, BBB bronze). Performa winches use the same mechanism with a sandblasted drum for thin high-strength line, and the Classic range (B6–B980, 1992–2016) is the earlier line. Every Radial from 15 to 70.2 takes the same 8 mm pawl and spring, so one service kit, BK4512, covers almost the whole cruising range and the Classic winches as well.

Good to know

  • Oil the pawls and springs, never grease them: Harken’s manuals say grease on the pawls can stop them engaging. Grease goes on as a thin brushed film on gears, gear pins, teeth and bearings only.14
  • Pick the kit by winch, not by brand: two-speed Radial 15–70.2, Performa 20 and all Classic winches take BK4512 (8 mm pawls); three-speed 60.3/70.3 and Performa 35–70 take the 8 mm racing kit BK4516; size 80 takes the 10 mm kit BK4515. Count your pawls — 4 on 15–40.2, 6 on 46.2–70.2 — so one kit lasts two services.2,5,6
  • A Radial strips from the top with one medium flat-bladed screwdriver: undo the central screw, lift off the handle socket and cover, then the self-tailing arm and drum, then the gears and pawl carriers. To take a pawl out, press its spring against the pawl with a thin blade. Refit to the torques in the manual.14
  • Once stripped: degrease the metal parts with a residue-free cleaner, rinse plastic parts in fresh water, dry with lint-free cloths. Look for wear on gear and ring-gear teeth, breaks in the bearing cages, corrosion on pins and pawls — and replace with original parts only; Harken says non-original parts void the warranty.14
  • Hose the winches with fresh water after every sail and keep the drainage holes in the base clear so water cannot collect inside. Keep teak cleaner and any caustic cleaner off them; chrome drums and bronze brackets are cleaned with one part vinegar to two parts water, nothing abrasive.18
  • Parts lists are per drum finish (STA, STC, STCW) and for the 2009-onward design; for an older Classic winch, pick the manual for its size and production era from Harken’s manual chart. When ordering, quote the serial number from the plate on the drum support.19,14
