Lagoon 440
The Lagoon 440 is a 13.61 m cruising catamaran with a flybridge helm, designed by VPLP (Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost) with an interior by Xavier Faÿ and built by Lagoon (Groupe Beneteau, Bordeaux). Hull no. 1 was sea-trialled in January 2004; in 2010 Lagoon presented the Lagoon 450 as its replacement, and Lagoon’s former-models page counts 423 boats. It came as an owner’s version with three cabins, the whole starboard hull for the owner, or as a charter version with four cabins and four heads. Lagoon’s documents give two 40 hp saildrive diesels as standard and stronger engines as an option, but never name the engine maker, so read the plates before ordering parts. In 2007 the interior changed from golden-pear varnished wood to light oak Alpi, and Lagoon’s light-displacement figure rose from 10.5 t to 12.15 t.

The engines sit under gas-strut hatches in the transoms, with foam soundproofing, electric blowers, a raw-water filter and dual-lever controls at the helm. |
| Engine | Diesel × 2 · 50–56 hp or 75 hp (option)1,7,2,8,9,10Engine upgrades listed by Lagoon: 2 × 56 or 2 × 75 hp (website 2004), 2 × 53 or 2 × 75 hp (website 2005–2006), 2 × 55 hp (spec sheet 09/2005), 2 × 50 hp (website early 2007), 2 × 55 hp (website August 2007 to 2008); the 2010 website lists only 2 × 40 hp | — | Maker and model are not given for any option, so read the plate on each engine before ordering filters, impellers or saildrive parts. |
| Saildrive | Saildrive × 211,2,4All years; Lagoon does not name the leg | — | Lagoon’s 12/2008 brochure: the drives sit aft of the rudders, away from the cabins, for better propeller efficiency. |

The electric winch to starboard of the helm takes the main halyard and reefs, the 53.2s the genoa halyard and sheets, mainsheet, traveller and furling line, and the 32.2 in the cockpit the davit tackle and the mainsheet safety release. |
| Winches | 48 CEST · 54 CSTO × 3 · 30 CSTO1Lagoon’s website, February 2004 (the first boats): an electric 48 at the helm, three 54 and one 30 | — | These codes follow Lewmar’s style (C chrome, E electric, ST self-tailing) rather than Harken’s, and no maker is named, so look at the drums of an early boat before ordering service kits. |

Good to know
- Lagoon has no owner’s manual for the 440 online. If your dealer cannot supply it, Lagoon sends the PDF on request to info@catamarans-lagoon.com. Don’t rely on the file user_guide_440_fr.pdf archived from Lagoon’s old website: despite its name it contains the Lagoon 400 manual.20,21
- Read the engine plates before ordering parts: Lagoon only ever gave 2 × 40 hp saildrive diesels as standard and upgrades of 50 to 75 hp, never a maker or model. SAILING Magazine’s 2009 test boat had Volvo Penta engines, but that says nothing about your boat; the plate decides which filters, impellers and saildrive parts fit.4,1,9,6
- Match the document to your boat’s build year: until early 2007 Lagoon listed golden-pear joinery and 10.5 t, from August 2007 light oak Alpi and 12.15 t; the electric halyard winch went from 48.2 (2005) to 46.2 (2008), the windlass from 1500 W to 1700 W, and the holding tank moved from the aft to the forward port head.8,9,2,3
- Lagoon installed fixed Goiot emergency hatches from 2007, and its recall covers catamarans built 2007–2019 that have them: a retaining kit is fitted, and Goiot now advises replacing these hatches every 10 years, kit or not. If your 440 was built in 2007 or later, check which escape hatches it has and contact a Lagoon dealer or service centre with the model and HIN.15
- Not every 440 has two diesels: SAIL tested one in 2006 with the optional diesel-electric drive, two electric motors fed by a 22 kW generator and a 144 V battery bank that the propellers recharge under sail. On such a boat the diesel and saildrive parts don’t apply, so ask a Lagoon dealer for the system’s documents.12
- Order spare parts through a Lagoon dealer or service centre: with your boat’s HIN or CIN, shown on the registration certificate and engraved on the hull, they can give you the part number, price and delivery time.22,23
