Raymarine ST60 / ST60+

ST60 and ST60+ are Raymarine’s SeaTalk instruments for sailing yachts, sold from the late 1990s until about 2011 (approximate dates; Raymarine publishes none): square 110 × 115 mm LCD displays for speed, depth and log (Speed, Depth, Tridata), wind (Wind, Close Hauled Wind), heading (Compass) and combined data (Multi, Graphic). Each display reads its own analog transducer (paddle wheel, 200 kHz depth, masthead vane or Rotavecta, fluxgate compass) or repeats data from the SeaTalk bus, which also carries the 12 V supply. The ST60+ range of December 2005 kept the housing, the bus and the transducers but changed the bezel and the display; early ST60 units may still carry the Raytheon name. Raymarine no longer repairs either: the i50 and i60 have the same 110 × 115 mm footprint, the i70s replaces a Multi or Graphic, and the transducers can usually stay.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
CalibrationStraight after installation, before first use: set the units, the depth offset (keel or waterline), speed (match GPS SOG, set the factor, or two measured runs out and back), temperature, wind linearisation and alignment, compass linearisation and heading alignment4
CalibrationSpeed: when the log disagrees with GPS SOG in slack water, accept SOG in intermediate calibration, or make two runs of 0.25–2.5 nm, each out and back3
CalibrationWind: at commissioning and after every change of wind transducer, load the factory defaults, motor two slow circles, then align the pointer head to wind. After fitting the new-style vane to an older system, set the wind-speed factor to 0.7 (software V6.0 and later) or 0.75 (earlier software)27,44
CalibrationCompass: at commissioning, and whenever the fluxgate is moved or replaced or new deviation shows, linearise again; if the corrected deviation stays above 15°, move the fluxgate45
Season checkEvery year: check that the locking ring of the wind vane arm is tight. No lubricant or sealant on the vane44
Full servicePaddle wheel: when boat speed reads zero or too low, pull the insert, fit the blanking plug at once and clean the paddle wheel3
Fresh-water washDisplays: clean now and then with a soft, damp cloth; no chemicals or abrasives4
Electrical connectionsNow and then: check the cables for chafe or a damaged outer sheath; replace and secure them again4

From Raymarine’s ST60+ handbooks (Tridata 81263-2, Speed 81261-1, Wind 81264-1, Compass 81265-1) and the new wind vane sheet 82178-4. Raymarine sets no maintenance schedule in hours or months for these instruments.

Good to know

  • A blank display is almost always a power fault. Check the fuse or breaker (5 A on the SeaTalk feed, 3 A for a stand-alone unit) and the SeaTalk plugs. If a whole group of instruments is dead, look at the SeaTalk connection between the last working one and the first dead one; unplug the instruments one at a time to find a unit that drags the bus down.4
  • Mist behind the window is condensation and does no harm: set the backlight to level 3 for a while to dry it out. What kills these instruments is water at the back, through the breathing hole or on the plugs, so keep the rear dry.4
  • Temperature still shows but boat speed is zero: the paddle wheel is fouled. Have the blanking plug ready, pull the insert, clean the wheel and refit it with the key in the keyway. The insert must sit fully home, flush with the housing, so the blade tips stand about 10 mm proud; an insert that is not fully in reads low.29
  • Masthead unit broken: if the mast cable is sound, the R28170 (short arm) or R28171 (long arm) replacement brings a new-style base and cap and reuses your cable; an old base with a slit through the thread has to go. If the cable is damaged, buy the complete E22078 or E22079 with new cable. Leave enough slack at the masthead to refit the plug.23
  • To show ST60 data on a SeaTalkng or NMEA 2000 plotter, use the E22158 converter kit: up to five SeaTalk devices on their own SeaTalk spur, powered either from the SeaTalkng side or from the SeaTalk side, never from both.35
  • Raymarine no longer repairs ST60 or ST60+ displays. Replacements with the same 110 × 115 mm footprint: i50 Speed, Depth or Tridata and i60 Wind or Close Hauled Wind; an i70s takes over from a Multi or Graphic. The wind vane, Rotavecta, DST800 and paddle-wheel transducers on this page also work with the i50/i60, or through an iTC-5.48,22,38
