Bavaria 44
The Bavaria 44 is the aft-cockpit sailing yacht that Bavaria Yachtbau of Giebelstadt, Germany, announced in July 2001 and listed until mid-2004: brochures were promised for the end of August 2001, YACHT tested it in issue 19/2001, and by August 2004 the longer 46 Cruiser had taken its place on Bavaria’s site. It is 13.95 m long with a 13.60 m hull, has a cast-iron keel with about 1.65 m draught (1.95 m as an option, lead at extra cost), three or four cabins with two heads and, on every yard list from 2001 to 2004 and on the US importer’s pages, a Volvo Penta D2-55 of 41 kW / 55 hp on a saildrive. Bavaria’s site of the period names J&J Design as its design office; none of these documents gives a production figure. The centre-cockpit Bavaria 44 Ocean, sold alongside it from 2001, has the same main dimensions, while the earlier Bavaria 44 of 1993 (J&J’s first Bavaria, also built as a charter ‘Holiday’ version) and the 44 Vision of 2006 are different boats, so check the year of build before you order parts.

Good to know
- Three other Bavarias carry 44 in their name: the centre-cockpit 44 Ocean, sold alongside from 2001 with the same main dimensions but a lead keel, two cabins and its own deck; the Bavaria 44 of 1993, J&J’s first design for the yard, also built as a charter ‘Holiday’ version; and the 44 Vision of 2006. Check the year of build and where the cockpit is before you order keel, rig or interior parts.13,14,16,17,18
- Every Bavaria list from 2001 to 2004 gives the Volvo Penta D2-55 with saildrive, but none names the drive. Volvo Penta’s 2003 manuals for the D2-55 A and B show the MS25S saildrive, its 2005 manual for the C version the 130S, so read the plates on engine and drive leg before you buy seals, anodes or a propeller. Volvo wants the rubber seal between drive and hull renewed every seven years.1,5,10,11
- Bavaria’s figures for the rig changed over the years: the 2004 data give a 57.60 m² genoa, a 49.50 m² battened main and 18.64 m above the waterline, against 48.00 m², 42.20 m² and 18.14 m in 2002–2003; the draught is 1.65 m or, as an option, 1.95 m. Measure the boat before you order sails or a furling foil.6,7
- The standard electrics are basic: one 55 Ah engine battery and two 140 Ah house batteries, a shore connection only ‘prepared for a battery charger’, and hot water only from the engine’s cooling circuit through a 20 l boiler. Expect a used boat to have been upgraded, and check what was fitted and how.3,4,5
- Bavaria’s lists name two pump toilets and an electric drain pump for the showers, but no holding tank. If you sail where overboard discharge is banned, check whether a holding tank and a deck pump-out have been fitted since.3,4,5
- Bavaria publishes no owner’s manuals online; its downloads page has brochures of the current range only. Original parts come through Bavaria’s partner SVB or a Bavaria dealer, who need the hull number or the model and year of build; YACHT reported in 2015 that the yard could not yet trace every part fitted to older yachts and that SVB will try to identify a part from a photo.30,31,32
