Bavaria C42
The Bavaria C42 is a 12.40 m cruising yacht from Bavaria Yachtbau in Giebelstadt, Germany, drawn by Cossutti Yacht Design with a chined hull and a V-shaped bow; it was first shown at boot Düsseldorf in January 2020, became European Yacht of the Year 2021 and sits between the C38 and the C46 in the C-Line. The diesel boat has a Yanmar 3JH40 (40 hp) on a saildrive as standard and a Yanmar 4JH57 (57 hp) as an option, a cast-iron L-keel of 2.10 m or 1.70 m, one rudder with twin wheels, a self-tacking jib and two or three cabins with one or two heads; since 2025 it is also sold as the C42e with a 25 kW electric or hybrid saildrive from EPTechnologies. Bavaria changed several of its published figures during the run, among them displacement, sail area, mast height and, from late 2024, the tank sizes, so the figures below carry their dates. There is no public owner’s manual: Bavaria’s downloads page holds brochures only, and its MyBAVARIA owner area needs a login.
Manuals & documents
Bavaria publishes no owner’s manual for the C42 online: the downloads page has brochures only, and the MyBAVARIA owner area needs a login. The links go to the builder’s model pages, its 2019 dealer information, the C-Line brochures of 2020, 2024 and 2025, the C42e data sheet and archived versions of the data page that show when the figures changed. The price list 2/2022, the only document that lists the standard equipment, is not on Bavaria’s site and is cited as text. We host no documents.

|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | Yanmar 3JH401,2,3Diesel C42, standard: 29.4 kW (40 hp) with saildrive; named in the price list of October 2021 | Yanmar 3JH5E & 3JH40 Parts & service page | The 2020 launch brochure prints ‘Yanmar 4JH40’ for the same 40 hp. Yanmar builds a three-cylinder 3JH40 at that power and no 4JH40, so the brochure most likely has a misprint: read the engine plate. Later brochures and web pages give only the power. |
| Engine | Yanmar 4JH571,2,4Diesel C42, option: 41.9 kW (57 hp) with saildrive and a three-blade folding propeller; named in the 2020 brochure and the price list of October 2021 | Yanmar 4JH45 / 4JH57 Parts & service page | Later web pages and brochures list only ‘41.9 kW / 57 PS’ as the option. Read the engine plate before ordering parts. |
| Engine | EPTechnologies 25 kW5,6,7,8C42e (eLINE), from 2025: electric, or hybrid with a 14 kW DC genset | — | Power comes from an 18.2 kWh propulsion battery, extendable by two more packs to 54.6 kWh; the EPTechnologies Multibox controls charging and the system. Bavaria quotes a range of more than 50 nm under electric power. Yanmar parts do not apply. |
| Generator | 14 kW DC6C42e hybrid: range extender; make not named | — | With the range extender the propulsion battery is 18.2 kWh; the 180 l fuel tank is listed for the hybrid only. |
| Saildrive | —1,3,4Diesel C42, both engines: saildrive; Bavaria does not name the leg | — | Yanmar’s drawings for the 3JH40 and the 4JH57 show its SD60 leg, but that does not prove what Bavaria fitted: read the plate on the leg before ordering seals, anodes or oil. |
| Propeller | —1Diesel C42: three-blade fixed propeller as standard; three-blade folding propeller with the 57 hp engine, or as an extra for the standard engine; make not named | — | |
| Steering | —1,9Twin wheels with emergency tiller; stainless-steel wheels with leather covers; one GRP rudder with aluminium stock; makes not named | — | Options: GRP wheels in black or white, wheel covers, helmsman seats with teak. |
| Winches | 2 × 451,10Standard, price list 2/2022: two halyard winches, size 45; with the self-tacking jib and the mid-boom mainsheet there are no standard genoa winches | — | The price list names no make. A Bavaria company story says every sailing yacht built at Giebelstadt carries Lewmar winches; check the winch top before ordering a service kit. |
| Winches | 2 × 451,11Options, price list 2/2022: genoa/gennaker/Code 0 winches, or sheet winches at the helm stand | — | Bavaria describes the helm winches of the C38 and C42 as bringing the mainsheet and the self-tacking jib sheet to the helmsman. They are an option, so look beside the wheels before assuming them. |
| Windlass | —1,5Diesel C42: electric windlass in the Sail Ready package, with a 16 kg anchor and 50 m of 8 mm galvanised chain · C42e: electric windlass standard; make not named | — | Without the package the boat has only a bow fitting with anchor roller. Upgrades: windlass with capstan, stainless anchor and chain. |
| Toilet | —1Standard: manual toilet with sea-water flush and a 70 l holding tank per toilet; make not named | — | |
| Toilet | —1Option: electric toilet with fresh-water flush, in the salon head or, with the B2 layout, in the forward head; make not named | — | |
| Instruments | B&G Triton² × 2 · DST8001,5,12,13Diesel C42: Navigation Basic package (also part of Advanced and Premium) · C42e: B&G instruments standard, models not named | — | Two Triton² displays in the cockpit, a B&G wind vane and a DST800 transducer for speed, depth and temperature. In 2026 Bavaria gave its ‘Advance’ navigation package free with the boot and Summer Deal offers on new C-Line boats; what it holds on a C42 is not itemised. |
| Chartplotter | B&G Zeus³ 7" · Zeus³S 9"1Navigation Advanced (Zeus³ 7 in) or Premium (Zeus³S 9 in) package, at the cockpit table, with GoFree Wi-Fi; a second Zeus³S 9 in at the chart table as an upgrade | B&G Zeus 3 / 3S / S Parts & service page | Advanced and Premium need the GRP cockpit table. |

Good to know
- Bavaria’s figures depend on the date of the document. The pages and dealer information of 2019 to spring 2021 give 9678 kg, an 11.27 m waterline, 100.6 m² of sail (main and genoa) and a 20.1 m mast; the price list of October 2021 and the pages from December 2021 give 10070 kg, 11.49 m, 90.5 m² (main and self-tacking jib) and 20.50 m. Go by the boat’s build year and its own CE plate rather than a brochure.17,9,1,18
- Read the engine plate. The 2020 launch brochure prints ‘Yanmar 4JH40’ for the standard 40 hp engine, but the price list of October 2021 says Yanmar 3JH40, and Yanmar builds only a three-cylinder 3JH40 at that power. The 57 hp option is the four-cylinder 4JH57; both are common-rail engines covered by Yanmar’s JH-CR operation manual.2,1,3,4,25
- Bavaria never names the saildrive leg of the diesel C42. Yanmar’s drawings for the 3JH40 and the 4JH57 show its SD60, but treat that as a lead only and read the plate on the leg before ordering seals, anodes or oil.1,3,4
- Tank sizes changed on Bavaria’s pages between May and October 2024: fuel went from 210 l to 180 l, and water from 210 l (460 l with the extra 250 l tank) to 180 l (plus 235 l). The February 2024 brochure still has the old figures, the December 2025 brochure the new ones, and Bavaria gives no reason. For tank senders, hoses or fittings, measure on the boat or ask with the hull number.22,23,21,8
- The standard C42 is plainly equipped and Bavaria sells the rest in packages. On the October 2021 list the standard boat has two halyard winches, a 110 l fridge, a manual toilet, a 40 A charger, one 95 Ah engine battery and one 180 Ah service battery; the electric windlass sits in the Sail Ready package and the B&G instruments, plotter and autopilot in the Navigation packages. On a used boat check what is fitted instead of assuming a package.1
- The C42e is a different boat below the waterline: a 25 kW electric saildrive from EPTechnologies with an 18.2 kWh battery pack (up to 54.6 kWh) and, in the hybrid version, a 14 kW DC genset and a 180 l fuel tank. Yanmar engine and saildrive parts do not apply to it.6,5
