Yanmar 3JH5E & 3JH40

The 3JH5E and the 3JH40 are Yanmar’s 1.64-litre three-cylinder JH diesels for sailing yachts and catamarans, with a shaft gearbox or a saildrive, and the successors of the 3JH4E and 3JH3E. The 3JH5E (39 hp) has a mechanical injection pump; with a saildrive it is called 3JH5CE, first paired with the SD50 and later with the SD60. The earliest Yanmar document naming it is the 2009 saildrive manual, and Yanmar publishes no end year. The 3JH40 (40 hp), launched in January 2018, is the common-rail version with electronic control and its own fuel filters and belt; no 3JH40 parts catalogue is online, so its numbers here come from the operation manual and dealer pages. Builders fitted these engines in the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409, 410 and 419 and the Hanse 418, and in pairs in the Lagoon 400, Leopard 44 and Bali 4.1.

Good to know

  • The 3JH5E has two belt layouts: up to engine no. E12748 a Hitachi alternator with the A43 V-belt 25152-004300, from E12749 a Valeo alternator with the ribbed belt 129271-77680. Read the engine plate or the old belt before ordering; the 3JH40 takes 129675-42280. The belt also drives the coolant pump, so a slack belt leads to overheating.2,6,7
  • The 3JH5E takes the small spin-on oil filter 119305-35170 (68 mm). The 129150-35170 sold for the four-cylinder 4JH is bigger and the wrong filter, even though the numbers look alike.10
  • Keep impeller kit 129670-42610 and puller 129671-92110 on board; both fit the 3JH5E and the 3JH40. Yanmar wants the impeller replaced every 1000 h even if it looks fine. If vanes are missing, find the pieces in the heat exchanger inlet before running the engine again.6,3
  • The fuel filters differ: the 3JH5E uses the spin-on 119802-55810 (formerly -55801), the 3JH40 the 129A00-55800 plus the pre-filter element 121857-55710. Common-rail injection does not tolerate water, so drain the separator every 50 h or monthly.7,6
  • A 3JH5E with a saildrive is a 3JH5CE: early boats have the SD50 (Yanmar’s 2009 saildrive manual), later ones the SD60 (installation drawings from 2013). The two legs take different oil and seals, so check which one you have before ordering (see our SD50/SD60 page).32,35
  • The parts catalogue lists no zinc anode on the engine itself. Corrosion protection sits on the saildrive leg (its anodes are on our SD50/SD60 page) or on the propeller shaft.2
