Najad 400

The Najad 400 is a 12.20 m centre-cockpit cruising yacht drawn by judel/vrolijk & co together with the yard and built by Najadvarvet in Henån on Orust, Sweden, from 2001 to 2005; Najad presented it as the model that completed the move of its whole range to the judel/vrolijk design line. It has a bolted 4 t lead keel (2.0 m draught, 1.8 m as an option), a semi-balanced rudder behind a skeg, a fractional rig with twin spreaders, a fixed windscreen and a teak deck, and every boat was built to order on one of three fixed layouts. The engine is a Yanmar on a conventional shaft with a KM4A gearbox: the yard’s September 2003 specification names the 56 hp 4JH3-E, its March 2005 specification the 54 hp 4JH4-E. The successor, the Najad 405 (2005–2009), kept the main dimensions but has a taller rig, a spade rudder without skeg and a Volvo Penta D2-55S, so check which of the two you have before ordering parts. Najad no longer lists the 400 and has no owner’s manual online: its specifications survive as archived copies of the yard’s website, and the yard’s after-sales team and the owners’ clubs are the people to ask.

Good to know

  • Read the engine plate before ordering filters, impellers or belts. Najad’s own documents name two Yanmars, the 56 hp 4JH3-E in the September 2003 specification and the 54 hp 4JH4-E in the March 2005 one, both with the KM4A gearbox, while the yard’s later pages just say “Yanmar, 55 hp”. Don’t go by the Najad 405 either: it has a Volvo Penta D2-55S.1,4,6,14
  • Measure the air draft yourself before a low bridge or a road transport: Najad gives the mast height above the waterline as 17.25 m in most documents but 18.50 m in its September 2003 specification, while both specifications put the mast at 16.8 m above the deck. The yard’s transport height is 4.38 m.1,4,2,5
  • The 400 has a conventional shaft, not a saildrive. At a haul-out look at the stern gland with its water-lubricated rubber bearing, the flexible shaft coupling, the shaft anode on the fixed bronze propeller and the greased stuffing box that seals the rudder stock behind the skeg.1,4
  • Every 400 was built to order and the standard specification changed: the heater and a 55 l holding tank are standard in March 2005 but not in September 2003 (when a holding tank was an option), and the yard’s fresh-water figure drops from 600 to 550 l. Check what a given boat actually has before buying spares or planning a refit.1,4,5
  • The sheet winches are stainless Andersen self-tailers (52ST and 40ST on the 2003 deck plan). Andersen winches are now sold by Ronstan, which still offers service kits for winches of that age: RA710001 for a 40ST made in 2006 or earlier and RA710008 for a 52ST up to version 2.5 (made in 2009 or earlier).1,3,8
  • There is no owner’s manual online. The yard’s specifications, brochure pages and model sheets survive as archived copies (linked above); for anything else ask Najad’s after-sales coordinator in Henån or an owners’ club: Najad Club Nederland offers the yard’s product information for each model, and Najadklubben Ostkusten a documentation file on the 400.16,17,18,6
