Hallberg-Rassy 352
The Hallberg-Rassy 352 is a 10.54 m centre-cockpit cruising yacht drawn by Olle Enderlein together with Christoph Rassy and built by Hallberg-Rassy in Ellös, Sweden: 802 hulls between 1978 and 1991 according to the yard’s model page, more than 800 by 1989 according to its company history. It was one of the first 35-footers with a walkthrough below deck to a separate aft cabin, and has a fixed windscreen, a 3 t iron keel encapsulated in a deep bilge and a rudder hung on a skeg; the hull was raised by a few centimetres in 1980 and again around 1986, and galley, companionway and saloon skylight were improved between 1984 and 1986. The engine depends on the year: a Volvo Penta MD21B until production of that engine ended in late 1984, then the turbocharged Volvo Penta 2003T of 32 kW (43 hp), and on a few late boats the optional MD22P of 57 hp. Boats came with a standard single-spreader rig or a taller double-spreader rig, and as the better-equipped Scandinavia version with diesel heater, pressure and hot water, an icebox compressor and a third battery. Hallberg-Rassy still offers the owner’s manual, the 1987 specification, the wiring diagram and the drawings as free downloads, and sells spare parts through Hallberg-Rassy Parts in Ellös.

Equipment & its manuals
Standard equipment as the builder’s documents list it. Boats were ordered with options and refitted since — check what is actually aboard.
| Item | Model | Manual / page | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | Volvo Penta MD21B1,2,3,4Standard from 1978 until Volvo Penta stopped making the engine in late 1984: four cylinders, 45 shaft hp in the brochure, single-lever control on the pedestal | Volvo Penta MD21 Parts & service page | The brochure promises 7.2 kn cruising on about 4.7 l of diesel an hour. Raw-water intake and strainer are on the port side of the engine room; the manual has you take off, open and rinse the vacuum valve in the cooling line (port side forward) twice a season and check its membrane. |
| Engine | Volvo Penta 2003T3,5,4From late 1984; December 1987 specification: three-cylinder turbo diesel with direct injection, fresh-water cooled with oil cooler, 32 kW (43 hp) at 3200 rpm; tachometer, temperature gauge and warning lights with buzzer | Volvo Penta 2003 Parts & service page | Serviced from the passageway; a bolted panel in the cockpit comes off to lift the engine out. Check the engine hold-down bolts after the first 20 hours and then every year, and have the shaft alignment checked with feeler gauges at the flange (manual). |
| Engine | Volvo Penta MD22P6,7,3Option towards the end of production, fitted to a few boats: 57 hp (German and Swedish yard pages; the English page only says MD 22) | Volvo Penta MD22 Parts & service page | |
| Gearbox | Volvo Penta MS2B 2.4:15,4With the 2003T in the December 1987 specification: reverse and reduction gear with single-lever control | — | The yard’s papers don’t name the gearbox of the MD21B boats. |
| Propeller | 3-blade, 15 × 16 in, left-hand5,4December 1987 specification (2003T): fixed three-blade propeller, 15 in diameter, 16 in pitch, left-hand | — | Going astern the bow swings to port; with the rudder hard to port and the engine alternating between slow ahead and slow astern she turns on the spot. Above about 2000 rpm the propeller cavitates when manoeuvring, especially astern (manual). |
| Shaft & stern gear | Ø 30 mm shaft · rubber cutless bearing5,8,9,4December 1987 specification: stainless shaft of 30 mm, water-lubricated rubber cutless bearing, rubber shaft seal in the hull; the yard’s bearing sheet gives the rubber bearing for a 30 mm shaft as 127 mm long with 44 mm outside diameter | — | The bearing sits in a bronze housing with grub screws and can usually be drawn out with a wire hook without removing the shaft; if it won’t move, the housing (held by M10 bolts at its flange) unscrews anticlockwise. The rubber shaft seal needs only a dab of grease and must be squeezed open to fill the stern tube with water after every launch (manual). |
| Winches | Lewmar 2-speed · reel halyard winches1,4Brochure and 1979 manual: Lewmar two-speed sheet winches with lock-in handles, halyard reel winches with a two-part drum and a brake | — | Wind the wire halyard onto the wide part of the drum and only the last turns onto the narrow part, and never release the brake with the handle still in the winch: the spinning handle can break an arm (manual). |
| Winches | Lewmar 43C × 2 · 16ST × 2 · 7C5,4December 1987 specification: two 43 two-speed sheet winches, two 16 self-tailing halyard winches and a 7 reef winch, two 10-in lock-in handles | Lewmar Ocean & EVO winches Parts & service page | Grease every winch at least once a year, best before laying up: take off the locking ring on top and lift the drum (manual). Our Lewmar page links Lewmar’s service booklets for older winches. |
| Steering | Edson pedestal · 30-in wheel1,5,4,10Brochure: Edson wheel steering; December 1987: pedestal with chain and sprocket and stainless wire to a heavy quadrant, 30-in stainless wheel covered in elk hide with adjustable friction brake; GRP rudder blade on a 40 mm bronze stock with cast bronze fittings | Edson chain and wire steering: planning, installation and maintenance guide (EB-381) | Inspect the system every year and oil sheaves, chain and wire lightly with engine oil; grease the wheel-shaft bearings every second year, renew the wire at the first broken strand and set its tension at the quadrant (manual). |
| Mast & rigging | Seldén, mast 206 × 139 mm5,4,3,11,12December 1987: Seldén mast and boom in silver-anodised aluminium, mast 206 × 139 mm with one set of spreaders on the coachroof above a reinforced bulkhead, boom 150 × 105 mm with two slab reefs and outhaul, rod kicker, all shrouds and stays 8 mm with 5/8-in rigging screws, wire-to-rope halyards; tall rig with two sets of spreaders as an option | Seldén: hints and advice on rigging and trimming (linked from the yard’s manuals page) | Mast length of the standard rig 12.90 m (manual). For tuning, the manual sets forestay, backstay and cap shrouds to about 2000 lb with about 4 in of rake, and the forward lowers so the mast bends forward about 1 in at half height. |
| Sails | Polyant · main 25 m² + jib 27.5 m²5,4December 1987: Polyant sails, mainsail of about 25 m² with two reefs and working jib of about 27.5 m²; the Scandinavia version adds a 39 m² genoa and a 16.7 m² storm jib | — | The 1979 manual carries the light genoa (34 m²) on the wind up to force 5, the working jib from 16 to 35 knots and the heavy-weather jib (19 m²) from about 30 knots, and the full main with the working jib up to force 6. |
| Toilet | Manual sea toilet5,4,1All lists: roomy heads to port with a porcelain basin set into the counter and a drained shower tray under a teak grating; hand-pumped sea toilet, maker not named; small holding tank optional | — | Leave the lever under the pump handle on ‘dry bowl’ and keep the outlet valve and the holding-tank valve shut at sea and when leaving the boat (manual). |
| Stove | Gas, 2 burners + oven, gimballed5,4,1December 1987: two-burner stove with oven in gimbals and flame-failure devices, propane through a fixed pipe and shut-off valve; the brochure offers a paraffin cooker instead | — | Maker not named. To light a burner, push in the knob, turn it to ignition and hold it 10–15 s; the oven has its own small button (manual). |
| Gas system | Propane, 2 × 6 kg4,5Ventilated, drained gas locker in the bow for two 6 kg bottles, above the chain locker, and a one-piece 8 mm copper pipe to a shut-off valve at the stove; boats left the yard without bottles and regulator | — | Fit a 30 mbar regulator and test the joints with soapy water from time to time (manual). |
| Fridge | Ice box 80 l · Frigoboat compressor5,1,13,4Standard: drained 80 l ice box; the Scandinavia version adds a compressor that turns it into a fridge, shown on the wiring diagram as a Frigoboat unit with a compressor clutch fed from the engine key switch | — | Our Frigoboat page covers today’s 12/24 V kits, not this older system. |
| Heater | Eberspächer D3L5,4,13Scandinavia version (1987): diesel air heater on the starboard bulkhead of the engine room, exhaust through the starboard blue stripe, fresh air through a duct from the chart table, thermostat at the chart table | — | It draws fuel through its own suction pipe in the main tank. The manual advises against running it on the thermostat: frequent starts load the batteries and leave soot around the exhaust; an optional engine-room blower clears the heat after long running. |
| Water pump | Pressure pump + foot pump5,4Standard: manual fresh-water pump at the galley; Scandinavia: automatic pressure water with the pump in the engine room and a pressure vessel, backed by a foot pump (1988 drawing in the manual) | — | Check the pressure vessel once a year: about 1.0 bar with the pump off and a tap open (0.8–1.0 bar on the drawing). Switch the pump off when leaving the boat; if it runs with every tap shut, look for a leak. |
| Water heater | Engine-heated calorifier5,4,1Scandinavia: water heater under the sail-locker floor, heated by the engine’s cooling circuit, with pressurised hot water and a shower in the heads; hot water about a quarter of an hour after starting, and the insulation keeps it hot overnight | — | |
| Bilge pump | Manual, in the oilskin locker4,5One hand bilge pump in the oilskin locker under the companionway ladder; electric pumps were optional | — | |
| Batteries | 12 V · 60 Ah start + 140 Ah service5,4December 1987: 60 Ah starting battery and 140 Ah for the service circuit in a closed, vented box, two main switches at the companionway ladder; the Scandinavia version adds a third battery; the manual describes a 70 Ah engine battery and two 140 Ah service batteries | — | The alternator is permanently connected to the batteries through the diodes, so Volvo Penta’s warning against switching the main switches off with the engine running does not apply here. If flat service batteries keep the alternator from charging, bridge the two circuits for a moment behind the main switches (manual). |
| Alternators | 50 A · diode split charging5,4,13December 1987: one 50 A engine-driven alternator charging both circuits through a double diode set; with the optional second alternator, that one charges the service batteries and the standard one the starting battery (manual and wiring diagram) | — | |
| Windlass | Optional, manual or electric4,1Optional extra in the manual; the brochure notes that a windlass fits without the chain blocking the hatch | — | To let go, open the clutch with the handle on the star nut outside the gypsy (anticlockwise), which also brakes the chain; keep the locker hatch open while hauling to see the chain pile up (manual). |
| Anchor | Folding fisherman 50 lb5,1,4December 1987: folding fisherman anchor of 50 lb with a 100 ft anchor line; the bow roller takes a plough anchor (brochure); chain locker below the gas locker in the bow | — | |
| Instruments | Sestrel compass · engine panel1,2,5,4Brochure: Sestrel compass on the steering pedestal (Sestrel-Major in the German edition); December 1987: compass, tachometer, temperature gauge, warning lights with buzzer, a panel for instruments in the cockpit and the switch panel with voltmeter and water and fuel gauges at the chart table | — | |
| Hatches & ports | Opening skylights · 9 mm acrylic ports5,3Portlights of 9 mm acrylic in light-alloy frames; opening skylights over the forward cabin, heads, saloon and aft cabin (escape hatch) and a Dorade vent aft; larger saloon skylight from around 1986; fixed windscreen of toughened glass in light-alloy frames with one opening panel and electric wiper, plus sprayhood | — |

Good to know
- Hallberg-Rassy keeps the 352’s papers online for free: the English owner’s manual with fuel, water and wiring diagrams, the standard specification of December 1987, the original colour brochure in English, German and Swedish, the interior drawing, the sail plan and sketches for the rudder, the cutless bearing and the winter cradle; a German manual from the early 1980s for the 352, 38 and 42E is on the yard’s manuals page. Original parts come from Hallberg-Rassy Parts AB in Ellös, and the Hallberg-Rassy Owners Association in the UK has a forum and a technical library for members.3,11,17,18
- Check which engine your boat has before ordering parts: the four-cylinder Volvo Penta MD21B on boats built until late 1984, the three-cylinder 2003T turbo after that, and the MD22P on a few late boats. For the engine itself Hallberg-Rassy refers to Volvo Penta’s instruction book; our MD21, 2003 and MD22 pages collect those manuals and the wear parts.3,6,1,5,4,11
- The engine draws from the main tank under it, and on the yard’s fuel diagram the gauge only starts to move at about 60 l: top up from the reserve tank under the port settee in time and don’t leave the valve between the tanks open. Pump a sample regularly from the bottom of the main tank with the test pump in the engine room, because water or sludge reaching the filters can seriously damage the injection pump. If the tank runs dry, bleed the system before starting; the yard replaced the banjo screw named in the Volvo book with a valve screw that stays open except while bleeding.4
- The rudder hangs on the skeg with a pin at its lower hinge and turns in a greased stuffing box where the stock enters the hull; if water weeps past the stock, release the lock nut and tighten the gland nut (manual). For play at the lower hinge the yard publishes Olle Enderlein’s rudder sketches, which show a new pin, and an HR 312 owner’s step-by-step guide to removing the rudder that it recommends for the 352 too. Fine cracks in the putty over the bronze rudder fittings are normal and have nothing to do with strength, according to the second sketch.4,19,16,20,3
- For a crane or travel lift, put the after strop about 0.5 m forward of the propeller and the forward one about 0.5 m forward of the mast step; the centre of gravity lies about 0.6 m forward of the forward cockpit coaming. On a slipway rest her on wooden blocks rather than steel rails, and ashore keep her level so the deck drains clear rain and snow; the yard’s two cradle sketches help if you have a cradle built.4,21,22
- Laying up where it freezes, the manual has you winterise the engine by the Volvo Penta book (boats left the yard with antifreeze in the fresh-water circuit), pump detergent and then fresh water through the toilet and take out the drain plug under its pump, and open the drain plugs of the bilge well once she is ashore. Charged batteries may stay aboard with the cables off and the terminals greased, but block a fixed charger first.4
