Leopard 44
The Leopard 44 is a 13 m cruising catamaran that Robertson and Caine built in Cape Town for Leopard Catamarans from 2010/11 until about 2017; The Moorings ran the same boat in its charter fleet as the Moorings 4400, with four cabins and more equipment. It was the first production catamaran of its size with a forward cockpit reached from the saloon through a watertight door, under one hardtop that also covers the raised helm and the aft cockpit. Private boats came with three cabins, the starboard hull being the owner’s suite, or with four. From model year 2014 the forward cockpit has moulded steps to the foredeck, a sliding hatch and folding tables; the Leopard 45 replaced the 44 in 2017.

Good to know
- The forward cockpit depends on its watertight saloon door, which has extra dog clamps for heavy weather, and on the large sump and underwing scupper that drain it (the builder states 100 % in 45 seconds). Check the door seal, the clamps and the drains at a survey.8,3
- Boats from model year 2014 have moulded steps from the forward cockpit to the foredeck, a sliding hatch above them and folding tables; earlier boats have the first layout. That helps to date a boat.5
- An ex-charter Moorings 4400 differs from a privately specified 44: Yanmar 4JH45 instead of the 29 hp engines, AGM batteries with a third house battery, four electric toilets, a hot and cold stern shower, an extra 220 l water tank, a Northern Lights generator, two Cruisair units, solar panels, davits with an electric winch and Raymarine electronics. Spare parts differ accordingly.2
- The engine rooms open through two size-70 Lewmar hatches. Each engine has its own fuel filter/water separator, raw-water strainer, exhaust water lock and exhaust-temperature alarm at the helm; two fans with ducting ventilate the engine rooms.2
- The standard electrical set-up is modest: two 180 Ah lead-acid house batteries, and no charger or shore power in the standard list. Charger, shore power and AGM batteries were extras, so boats vary widely; check what is fitted before buying spares.2
- Leopard does not offer the owner’s manual as a download. The owners page points to the Leopard Catamarans Owner app (by Boatclick), which holds the owner’s manuals and the equipment makers’ documents per model.9
