Quick Aleph

The Aleph is Quick’s vertical windlass for boats of about 7 to 15 m: a hard-anodised aluminium base on deck with one gypsy for rope and chain and a cone clutch released with the lever, and the motor-gearbox hanging below deck. The current AL3 comes as AL3 P 700 and AL3 P 1000 with a technopolymer TG50 gearbox and as AL3 1500 with an aluminium TG70 gearbox, each for 12 or 24 V, with or without a drum (D), and with a gypsy for 8 mm-5/16 in or 10 mm-3/8 in chain. The earlier Aleph AL, whose manual (rev. 004A) survives in a 2012 archive copy, was built in the same 700, 1000 and 1500 W sizes. Many spares are shared with other Quick ranges: the gypsies with the discontinued Antares, the clutch cones with Antares, Hector HC3 and Prince DP3, the motors with Prince DP and Rider.

Quick marks them ‘AT/AL’: the same gypsies fit the discontinued Antares AT 1000/1500, and both the 2011 Antares manual and the archived Aleph AL manual give the component codes ZSB1008516T4 and ZSB1010380T3. The Hector HC3 gypsies (…HA00) are different parts.
Clutch coneFVSSCFANHC00A001,4,5—Top and bottom clutch cone as one kit, for all AL3 sizes. Quick lists the same kit for the Antares AT, Hector HC3 and Prince DP3 (‘AT/HC/AL/DP3’). When you refit them, grease the gypsy faces where the cones sit.

Each holds the main shaft with both oil seals, bearing, snap rings and key; Quick lists no separate seal kit for the Aleph, so this is also how you renew the shaft seals.
MotorFVSSM0712000A00 · FVSSM0724000A00 · FVSSM1012000A00 · FVSSM1024000A00 · FVSSM1512000A00 · FVSSM1524000A001,3,5,6—Motor alone, without gearbox, in this order: 700 W 12 V, 700 W 24 V, 1000 W 12 V, 1000 W 24 V, 1500 W 12 V, 1500 W 24 V. The archived Aleph AL manual lists the same six codes. Quick also lists the 700/1000 W motors for Prince DP and Rider R3, and the 1500 W motor for Prince DP3 1500, Antares AT 1500 and Balder BL3 1500.
Clutch leverFVSSLVSP00R1A001,4,3—Curved lever R01, supplied with the windlass and the same as on the Hector HC3. It loosens and tightens the clutch bush and, with the gypsy lock engaged, cranks the chain in by hand. The archived Aleph AL manual lists the bent lever as component ZSLMSHR10000.
Control box / solenoidT6315-12 · T6315-247,8,1—Contactor box supplied with every AL3: T6315-12 for 12 V, T6315-24 for 24 V. The same box comes with the Prince DP2 P 700/1000 and DP3, Rider R3, Eagle E3, Dylan and the larger Balder. Mount it where no water can reach it.

Up/down switchWCS 820 · WCS 830 · WCS B1,5,6—Up/down controls for the helm panel (WCS series), recommended in the AL3 manual.
Motor-gearbox unitFVSSR0712Q00B00 · FVSSR0724Q00B00 · FVSSR1012Q00B00 · FVSSR1024Q00B00 · FVSSR1512Q00A00 · FVSSR1524Q00A001,3,5,6—Complete motor with gearbox, in this order: 700 W 12 V, 700 W 24 V, 1000 W 12 V, 1000 W 24 V, 1500 W 12 V, 1500 W 24 V. The archived Aleph AL manual lists the 700 and 1000 W units with an A00 ending (e.g. FVSSR1012Q00A00); whether the B00 unit replaces it is not confirmed, so ask a Quick dealer. Quick lists the same units for Prince DP and Rider R3, the 1500 W unit also for Prince DP3 1500 and Antares 1500.
Gearbox (without motor)FVSSMR10TG50B00 · FVSSMR15TG70A001,3,5,6—FVSSMR10TG50B00 = TG50 for the AL3 P 700 and P 1000 (technopolymer), FVSSMR15TG70A00 = TG70 for the AL3 1500 (aluminium); gearbox alone, without motor. The archived Aleph AL manual lists the TG50 as FVSSMR10TG50A00; whether B00 replaces it is not confirmed. The TG50 is shared with Prince DP2/DP3 700–1000 W and Rider R3 700/1000, the TG70 with Prince DP3 1500, Rider R3 1400 and Dylan 1500.
Pressure lever kit (rope tensioner)FVSSTCAL0000A001,13—Pressure lever with spring, pin and rope puller: it keeps the rope pressed into the gypsy. Quick lists it as ‘pressure lever kit Aleph’; Jimmy Green Marine sells it under ‘AL’.
Gypsy lock kitFVSSBLBBDN00A001,14—Lock lever with spring, control, safety catch and pin; Quick marks it ‘DN/AL’ and lists the same kit for the Dylan H DH4. It locks the gypsy so you can haul the chain by hand with the lever, or use the drum on its own.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Fresh-water washPeriodically: wash salt deposits off all outside surfaces with fresh water so they cannot start corrosion1
Strip, clean & greaseOnce a year: take off the drum or gypsy cover, the top cone, the chain stripper, the gypsy and the bottom cone; clean all parts and grease the main-shaft thread and the gypsy faces where the cones sit with marine grease1,3
Electrical connectionsOnce a year, with the gypsy service: remove oxide from the terminals of the motor and the contactor box, then grease them1

From Quick’s AL3 Series installation and user’s manual (rev. 000A); the archived Aleph AL manual (rev. 004A) lists the same points. Quick gives no hour counts, only ‘periodically’ and ‘once a year’, and leaves any work on the motor-gearbox to qualified staff, with the unit cold.

Good to know

  • Switch the windlass off at its breaker before you put the lever in the clutch bush or the drum: anyone holding a remote or standing on a foot switch could otherwise start the motor with the lever still in place.1
  • Don’t lie to anchor or sail with the load on the windlass: once anchored, put the chain on a stopper or bollard, secure it before you leave, and switch the breaker off under way.1
  • If it stops under load and the breaker has not tripped, wait a few seconds and try again in short bursts rather than holding the button. If the breaker tripped, reset it and give the motor a few minutes; if the anchor still won’t come, motor the boat up to it to break it out.1
  • Many Aleph spares carry other ranges’ names: the gypsies are marked ‘AT/AL’ (Antares), the clutch cone kit ‘AT/HC/AL/DP3’, the gypsy lock kit ‘DN/AL’ (Dylan). Order by the code in the AL3 manual, not by the windlass name, and don’t take a Hector HC3 gypsy for an AL one.1,4
  • Order the gypsy by chain standard: the 8 mm-5/16 in gypsy takes 8 mm DIN 766 or ISO and 5/16 in G4 or BBB, the 10 mm-3/8 in gypsy only 10 mm ISO and 3/8 in G4. Rope runs over the gypsy only with Quick’s rope-to-chain splice, woven tight enough to slide into the gypsy.1
