Lewmar V1 / V2 / V3

The V1, V2 and V3 are Lewmar’s mid-size vertical windlasses for boats up to about 14 m (48 ft): a stainless-steel deck unit with a rope/chain gypsy, cone clutch for free-fall, fall-safe anchor lock and, on the V2 and V3 ‘GD’, a warping drum, driven by a worm gearbox and a 700 W (V1, V2 12 V), 900 W (V2 24 V) or 1000 W (V3) motor below deck. There are two generations: the original V2 and V3 of 2003 with a bolted ‘fixed drive’ motor gearbox, and a redesigned deck unit from 2007/08 that added the V1 and FastFit, a hinged clamp that lets one person slide the motor gearbox onto the shaft and lock it in 45° steps. Gypsies, drive cap, drum top nut, control arm and chain-counter sensor fit both, while base, chain-pipe cover, drive and seal kits and motor gearboxes differ, and Lewmar still sells FastFit and non-FastFit motor gearboxes and deck units side by side. The V1–V3 share one manual (65001201) with the larger V4/V5 and the chain-only V6, which have their own kits; the smaller V700 is a different design with its own page.

Full serviceRegularly: rinse with fresh water; check the electrical connections for corrosion, then clean and lightly grease them; keep the anchor-locker drain clear and the motor dry and rust-free; check the rope-to-chain splice; inspect the gypsy (the main wear part) and smear grease on the cone and gypsy contact faces whenever you reassemble. Check the mounting studs and nuts after the first two or three recoveries, then regularly (the 2007 V2/V3 manual: at least every 6 months).2,18
Strip, clean & greaseAnnually (manual issue 11): strip, clean and lightly grease the above-deck parts2
Electrical connectionsAnnually: check the cables for damage; clean and repaint a corroded motor and gearbox with oil-based marine enamel; take the motor cover off and blow out the brush dust (don’t breathe it)2
LubricationOriginal V2/V3 (2003): at least every 6 months, dismantle the above-deck parts, wash them with fresh water, lightly oil (SAE 10) the seal, shaft, cone clutch and spline, check the sealing ring under the gypsy and grease the threads of the chain-pipe cover and stripper screws; the bearing is self-lubricating5

From Lewmar’s owner’s manual 65001201 (V1–V6), issue 11, plus the 2003 manual ‘V2, V3, V4 & V5 Windlass Range’ (issue C) for the original V2/V3 and the 2007 V2/V3 manual for the stud check. Lewmar words these as ‘regularly’, ‘annually’ and ‘every 6 months’, not as operating hours.

Rope sizeWindlass-grade medium-lay nylon rope, 3-strand or 8-plait: 12–14 mm on gypsies 006 and 000, 12–16 mm on 001 and 002, 16 mm on 003 (8-plait only in 16 mm, on 001 and 002).2
MountingDeck at least 25 mm (1 in) thick; the standard M8 studs suit deck plus packing of 25–50 mm (1–1 31/32 in), an extended version up to 127 mm; the 2007 manuals gave up to 60 mm (2 1/4 in) for the standard studs. Thin, foam- or balsa-cored decks need reinforcing. FastFit units: slide the motor gearbox up the shaft with the drive key in place, close the hinged clamp, tighten the bronze nut to 15 Nm (11 lbf·ft) and lock it with the Nyloc nut; the motor gearbox can then be turned and fixed in 45° steps. Non-FastFit units and the original V2/V3 (2003, ‘fixed drive’) mount the motor gearbox directly, without the clamp.2,18
DimensionsDeck cut-outs: two 75 mm (3 in) holes for the rode and the motor down-tube, and 10 mm (3/8 in) holes for the four M8 studs and the chain-counter sensor on a 90 mm (3 9/16 in) pitch circle; the template also shows an optional 14 mm hole for an anchor sensor. Lead from the bow roller horizontal to the top of the gypsy, within ±5°.2
WeightGypsy only: V1 19 kg (42 lb), V2 19 kg, V3 21.5 kg (47 lb). Gypsy/drum: V2 22 kg, V3 24.5 kg (2020 catalogue); manual issue 11 lists 24.5 kg for the V2 24 V and 36 kg for the V3 24 V gypsy/drum.22,2
Waterproof ratingOptional IP68 motor gearbox (non-FastFit) in a composite case that survives submersion; Lewmar also sells a 2017 IP67/IP68 retrofit kit (68001001) for the V1–V3.22,45

Good to know

  • Find out which V1–V3 you have before ordering: a hinged clamp with a bronze nut where the motor gearbox meets the deck unit means FastFit (from 2007/08). Without it, the unit is non-FastFit or one of the original 2003-type V2/V3, which take their own base, chain-pipe cover, seal and drive kits. Gypsies, drive cap, drum top nut and control arm fit both.22
  • Read the gypsy number (000, 001, 002, 003 or 006) before buying a gypsy and match it to your chain: 001 is for 8 mm DIN/ISO, 002 for 10 mm DIN, 003 for 10 mm ISO and only fits the V2/V3. Use windlass-grade medium-lay nylon rope; other makers’ rope may need trial and error.2
  • Slow or stalling under load is usually electrical: the motor needs about 13.5 V on a 12 V system (26.5 V on 24 V) while running. Check the cable size against the 10 % voltage-drop rule, the battery, isolator, breaker and every crimp before blaming the motor; constant low voltage damages it.2
  • When you reconnect the motor, hold the inner terminal nut with a second spanner and tighten the outer M8 nut to only 15–18 Nm; if the inner nut turns, it damages the motor and voids Lewmar’s warranty.48
  • The fall-safe pawl ratchets during recovery and should stay engaged once the anchor is stowed, but must be lifted clear before you let the anchor go. Never let the pawl or the windlass hold the boat at anchor: put the chain on a stopper or cleat.2
  • If the chain creeps out on its own, the gypsy drive cap is slack: tighten it clockwise with a winch handle. To change the gypsy, take off the chain-pipe cover (5 mm Allen key), unscrew the cap anticlockwise, lift off washer and top cone, pull the control arm back and lift the gypsy off; rinse it, don’t jet-wash it, and grease the cone faces before refitting.2
