Lewmar V700
The V700 is Lewmar’s smallest vertical windlass, made for boats up to about 10.5 m (35 ft): a low 316 stainless deck unit with the 320 W IP67 motor and gearbox hanging below deck through a single 115 mm hole. It is sold as the bare deck unit 6670011108 or as the kit 6670011108-312 with breaker, switch and contactor. The gypsy gives the generation away: units from the time of the 2006 manual (issue 2) have a single-size gypsy for either 6 mm DIN 766 or 7 mm / 1/4 in G4, by 2016 at the latest Lewmar fitted the dual gypsy 68001024 for 6 and 7 mm DIN 766 and 1/4 in G4/BBB, and an 8 mm version and conversion kit exist. It is still in Lewmar’s range with manual 65001022 at issue 8 (2017); the V1–V3, V4–V6 and Pro-Series windlasses are different designs with their own manuals and kits, while the CPX0 uses the same control arm kit 66000600 and gypsy cap kit 66000601.

|---|---|---|---|
| Chain gypsy | 680010241,2,3,4 | — | Current dual-chain gypsy (Lewmar gypsy no. 603): 6 and 7 mm DIN 766, 1/4 in G4/BBB, with 12 mm (1/2 in) 3-strand or 8-plait rope. Lewmar lists it as ‘V700 dual gypsy assy’; the 2020 catalogue puts it in place of both single-size kits 66000603 and 66000604. |
| Chain gypsy | 660006041,5,6 | — | Single-size gypsy kit for 6 mm DIN 766 (gypsy 37b, Lewmar gypsy RC0670, with M6 × 20 cap screw), for V700s built with the one-size gypsy; still sold on lewmar.com. |
| Chain gypsy | 660006031,6,7 | — | Single-size gypsy kit for 1/4 in G4 and 7 mm DIN 766 (gypsy 37a, Lewmar gypsy RC0765, with M6 × 20 cap screw). lewmar.com no longer lists 66000603 but sells the single-size 1/4 in G4 gypsy kit as 2022373469 (gypsy 66200360 with M6 × 20 screw). Current units use the dual gypsy 68001024. |
| Chain gypsy | 20223735188,9 | — | 8 mm / 5/16 in conversion kit: 8 mm gypsy 68001150, upper cone 65002258, 8 mm top cap 65002259 and 8 mm mainshaft 65002327. Gypsy and top cap are also sold alone. |
| Chain gypsy | 680011508,10,9,11,12,13 | — | 8 mm / 5/16 in gypsy on its own (Lewmar also lists it as 2022373522), for V700s built as 8 mm (deck unit 2022374241) or already converted. A 6/7 mm unit needs the whole conversion kit 2022373518, because the 8 mm version also has its own mainshaft, upper cone and top cap; the top cap is sold singly as 2023045683 and the mainshaft as 2023057693. |
| Clutch cone | 6600077214,4 | — | Cone kit for V700s with the 8 mm gypsy: drive cone 65002121, upper cone 65002258, rubbing washer 65002124, washer 65002260 and circlip. Lewmar calls it ‘CPX0 & V700-8mm cone kit’, and the 2020 catalogue lists the same number as the CPX0’s cone and washer kit; for the 6/7 mm V700 Lewmar does not list it. |
| Seal set | 660006081,15 | — | Bearing and seal kit: three needle roller bearings, roller clutch, ball bearing, internal circlip, gearcase gasket and wiper seal. |
| Motor | 660006101,16 | — | Motor kit 12 V, 320 W, IP67: motor with cover, gearcase gasket, screws and cable ties. |
| Gearbox (without motor) | 660006111,17,4 | — | Gear case complete: the housing below deck with its needle roller bearings, bush, spring washers, three M6 × 60 screws and gasket. The gears themselves come in the gear set 66000612, the motor in the motor kit 66000610. |
| Driveshaft kit | 660006091,18 | — | Driveshaft kit: mainshaft, drive washer, spacer, three stainless rollers, external circlip and gasket. |
| Top cap | 660006011,19 | — | Gypsy drive cap kit: drive cap 31 and drive washer 21. The cap is what the clutch lever tightens; if the rode pays out by itself, it has worked loose. |
| Pawl & spring kit | 660006071,20 | — | Fall-safe kit (anchor lock): pawl, lever, shoulder screw, spring and M5 countersunk screw. On lewmar.com the kit carries catalogue number 2020200920. |
| Chain stripper | 660006001,21 | — | Control arm (stripper) kit: control arm, torsion spring and shoulder screw. On lewmar.com listed as 2020200915. |
| Control box / solenoid | 00525311,22 | — | 12 V contactor from the manual’s wiring diagram; supplied in the 6670011108-312 kit, where a dealer’s list names a 68000939 changeover contactor instead. Check which one you have before ordering. |
| Control box / solenoid | 680003204,23 | — | Sealed dual contactor that Lewmar’s 2020 catalogue lists for the V700 (and the CPX4 and V4) as a 12 V part; lewmar.com shows it under ‘CPX 4 / V700 / V4’ but marks it 24 V, so check the voltage on the unit. An alternative to the contactor 0052531 named in the manual. |
| Clutch lever | 660008051,24,4replaces 66000099 | — | 66000099 in the manual and in the V700 parts list of Lewmar’s 2020 catalogue, where 66000805 appears as the CPX0’s clutch lever; lewmar.com now sells the V700 clutch lever as 66000805. |
| Gear set | 660006121,25,26 | — | Mainshaft gear, both compound gears, rollers, circlip and gasket; the 2nd compound gear alone is 66000613. |
| Gear set | 66000613 · 660006141,26,4 | — | Single gears: 66000613 is the 2nd compound gear assembly, 66000614 the 1st compound gear; some Lewmar parts lists include a gear case gasket with each. Both are also in the gear set 66000612. |

| Up/down switch | 680005931,22 | — | Guarded rocker switch for the contactor installation; the simple two-wire installation uses the reversing toggle switch 0052519. |
| Up/down switch | 00525191,6 | — | Reversing toggle switch for the two-wire installation without contactor; the manual’s troubleshooting chart is written for it. Foot switches, a hand-held control, a wireless remote or a second station need the contactor installation. |
| Foot switch | 68000598 · 680005976,1,4,31 | — | Deck foot switch set, black / white, from the contactor wiring diagram of manual issue 2; the current manual shows foot switches without numbers. Lewmar’s current deck foot switches each work one direction (down 68000883 / up 68000884 in grey) and must be wired through a contactor. |
| Remote control | 680005996,32,4 | — | Hand-held control from the contactor wiring diagram (issue 2; the current diagram shows it without a number), still listed on lewmar.com. Lewmar’s newer wired remote 66940002 (3 m cable, IP67 deck socket) is made for all Lewmar windlasses. |

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Full service | Regularly: wash down with fresh water, check the rope-to-chain splice and keep the anchor-locker drain clear so the motor stays dry (if the locker has filled with water, check the motor is dry and free of rust); check the mounting studs after the first two or three recoveries and then regularly1 |
| Clutch | Inspect the gypsy regularly, it is the part that wears; smear grease on the cone and gypsy contact faces every time the gypsy is refitted1 |
| Grease | At least once a year: strip, clean and re-grease the drive-shaft parts above deck with an SFG 100-type PTFE grease; the gearbox is lubricated for life1 |
| Electrical connections | Regularly: inspect, clean and lightly grease the connections. Once a year: check the cables for damage and the motor and gearbox for corrosion, repaint with marine enamel1 |
| Motor brushes | Once a year: take the motor cover off and blow out the brush dust1 |
From Lewmar’s owner’s manual 65001022, issue 8. Lewmar gives no hour counts for the V700, only ‘regularly’ and ‘annually’.

Good to know
- Never let the windlass, its clutch or the fall-safe pawl hold the boat at anchor: make the rode fast to a cleat, bollard or chain stopper. Lewmar says using the windlass as the strong point damages it. If the rode pays out by itself while moored, the gypsy drive cap has worked loose: tighten it clockwise with the clutch lever.1
- Sluggish or stalling under load: measure the voltage at the motor leads while hauling. Below 11 V on a 12 V system points to undersized cable, poor or corroded connections or a weak battery, and constant low voltage kills the motor. Only if the voltage is right and the anchor is not fouled is the motor itself the suspect.1
- Changing the gypsy takes minutes: drive cap off anticlockwise with the clutch lever, lift off the drive washer, undo the stripper’s 5 mm Allen screw, swing the control arm back and lift the gypsy off the shaft. Grease the cone and shaft before refitting.1
- Power the rode out rather than free-falling it, so the chain does not pile on top of the anchor, and on recovery motor gently towards the anchor instead of letting the windlass pull the boat. Inch the last metre in so the anchor does not hit the stem, then leave the fall-safe pawl engaged in the gypsy so the anchor cannot deploy under way; lift it again before the next drop.1
- Before ordering a gypsy, look at the one fitted and measure your chain: older V700s carry a single-size gypsy (6 mm DIN 766 or 7 mm / 1/4 in G4), newer ones the dual gypsy 68001024, which Lewmar lists in place of both. For 8 mm chain the gypsy alone is not enough on a 6/7 mm unit: the conversion kit 2022373518 also brings the 8 mm mainshaft, upper cone and top cap.6,4,8
- Mount the contactor in a dry place, never in the anchor locker: Lewmar’s manual (issue 2) says it is not built for those conditions and that such an installation voids the warranty. Foot switches and the wireless remote need the contactor; the simple toggle-switch installation cannot take them.6,4
