Lofrans Cayman
The Cayman is a horizontal Lofrans windlass for boats of roughly 25 to 55 ft: an anodised aluminium body on deck with the chain gypsy on one side and an independently driven warping drum on the other, the DC motor beside them under an IP67 cover, manual chain release, manual override by handle and a worm gearbox in a 0.5 l oil bath. Today’s Cayman is the former Cayman 88 – manual, parts lists and spare-part names still use that name – and comes with a 700 W or 1000 W motor for 12 V or 24 V, plus a 1300 W version for 48 V. Lofrans (Italy, since 1966) still builds it; the Kobra (1000 W) shares its maintenance kit 72048, main shaft and bearings, while the Tigres (1500 W, own page) and the Falkon (1700–2200 W) are the larger horizontal models. The 276-series gypsies fit the Cayman, Kobra, Tigres and the hand-operated Royal; the Falkon has its own.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Grease | Rinse all outer surfaces and hidden spots with fresh water and soap (no chlorine) to remove the salt, grease the moving parts, above all the main-shaft thread and the clutch cones, and check for corrosion: every 3 months if the boat is used more than 6 months a year or chartered, every 6 months with 2–6 months’ use, once a year with under 2 months’ use5 |
| Clutch | At each greasing or when changing chain size: turn the gypsy off anticlockwise with the handle, slide off the upper cone, gypsy and lower cone, wash with running water (never a pressure washer), check for corrosion and mechanical damage, and grease the threads and all moving parts on reassembly5 |
| Electrical connections | Every 12 months: check the motor terminals, measure the voltage drop at the terminals and make sure the control box sits in a dry place5 |
| Gaskets | Replace all gaskets and the gearbox oil (0.5 l SAE 90–140): every 24 months with 2–6 or more than 6 months’ use a year, every 12 months on charter boats, every 36 months with under 2 months’ use; the seals come in maintenance kit 720485,20,1 |
| Full service | Every 36 months (every 24 months on charter boats): lift the windlass off the deck, clean the salt from under the base, check for corrosion and re-bed it. Charter boats also every 36 months: take out the stainless deck and stripper screws and refit them with a chromate-free anti-galvanic compound5 |
From the maintenance programme (section 6.1, page 13) and the gypsy maintenance (section 6.2) in Lofrans’ installation and user’s manual for the Lion 1000, Cayman 88, Tigres and Falkon. Lofrans staggers the steps by months of use per year, not by operating hours, and the warranty lapses if the programme is not followed. Disconnect the power before any maintenance.

Good to know
- Before ordering a motor, compare flange shape, shaft diameter and number of terminals with the table in Lofrans’ FAQ. The Cayman motors listed there (634365, 634367, 634368) have a small triangular flange and a 17 mm shaft; the 700 W motor has 2 terminals, the 1000 W motor 3. If the terminal count changes, the control box has to change with it.11,12,2
- The 700 W Cayman has a 2-terminal motor, so Lofrans asks the installer to run a bonding wire from the windlass to the boat’s cathodic protection, and anchor and chain must be insulated from the hull. On aluminium boats every windlass needs a non-conductive gasket under the base (not supplied). Without these precautions, electrolysis corrodes the windlass quickly.5
- Going from a 6–8 mm or 5/16 in gypsy (types a–d) to 10 mm or 3/8 in (types e–h) also means the other outer cone (631846 instead of 631842) and the other stripper (635272 instead of 635271). Check first that the windlass can take the heavier chain, and note that the 7 mm gypsy is cut for ISO 4565, not for 7 mm DIN 766.5,2,8
- Act on an oil trace between motor and gearbox straight away: the gearbox holds only 0.5 l of SAE 90–140 oil, and Lofrans’ manual names a loose motor coupling as the cause, which lets the worm run off-centre and ruins the gasket. Find out why the bolts came loose, check the motor shaft and the worm bore for ovality, then replace the gaskets 631267/633243 and the oil.5,20
- A Cayman that runs slowly or trips the breaker usually has undersized cables, poor connections, dirty brushes or water in the motor; Lofrans also lists decks that are not parallel and a gearbox that has lost oil. Check those before blaming the motor. The breaker protects against overload, not against overheating on long runs: after it trips, wait a few minutes before resetting.5
- Never let the windlass hold the boat at anchor: put the chain on a chain stopper so wind, current and waves pull on the deck fitting, not on the gearbox. Leave at least 300 mm between the underside of the deck and the top of the heaped chain, and keep the chain angle at the bow roller under 90°; a shallow locker is the classic cause of jams.5
