Lofrans Falkon
The Falkon is Lofrans’ big horizontal windlass, one size up from the Tigres: an anodised aluminium body on deck with the chain gypsy on one side and an independently driven rope drum (or a second gypsy) on the other, a band brake, manual chain release, manual override by handle, an IP67 motor cover and a worm gearbox in an oil bath with a sight glass. Lofrans (founded 1966 in Italy) builds it with a 1700 W motor in 12 V or 24 V, a 2000 W motor in 24 V and a 2200 W motor in 48 V; the manual puts the 1700 W on boats of 45–55 ft and the 2000 W on 50–60 ft under heavy use. Lofrans’ parts list from 2006 shows early Falkons with 1200 W and 1500 W motors. The Falkon shares its manual with the Lion 1000, Cayman 88 and Tigres, but takes its own, larger 367-series gypsies, which it shares with the Titan.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Grease | Wash all surfaces with fresh water and soap (no chlorine), remove the salt, grease the main-shaft threads and clutch cones and check for corrosion: every 3 months if the boat is used more than 6 months a year or chartered, every 6 months for 2–6 months’ use, once a year for under 2 months’ use9 |
| Clutch | When greasing the cones (step B) or changing chain size: unscrew the gypsy with the handle, slide off the upper cone, gypsy and lower cone, wash with running water (never a pressure washer), check for corrosion or mechanical damage, grease the threads and all moving parts on reassembly9 |
| Electrical connections | Every 12 months: check the motor terminals, measure the voltage drop at the terminals and make sure the control box is in a dry place9 |
| Gaskets | Replace all gaskets and the gearbox oil (1.0 l SAE 90–140; seals in maintenance kit 72051): every 24 months with 2–6 or more than 6 months’ use a year, every 12 months on charter boats, every 36 months with under 2 months’ use9,17,1 |
| Full service | Every 36 months (every 24 months on charter boats): lift the windlass off the deck, clean the salt from under the base, check for corrosion and re-bed it. Charter boats also every 36 months: remove the stainless deck and stripper screws and refit them with a chromate-free anti-galvanic compound9 |
From the maintenance programme (section 6.1, page 13) in Lofrans’ installation and user’s manual for the Lion 1000, Cayman 88, Tigres and Falkon. Lofrans gives calendar intervals by months of use per year, not operating hours, and the warranty lapses if the programme is not followed. Disconnect the power before any maintenance.

Good to know
- Check the sight glass before the season: the Falkon’s gearbox takes 1.0 l of SAE 90–140 gear oil. Oil seeping out between motor and gearbox usually means the motor bolts have worked loose, so the worm runs off-centre and wears the seal; tighten them and renew the seals with kit 72051 rather than just topping up.9,17,1
- Before ordering a motor, compare flange shape, shaft diameter and number of terminals with the motor table in Lofrans’ FAQ. The 1700 W Falkon motors 634371/634372 (triangular flange, 17 mm shaft, 3 terminals) run with worm 635693; the 2000 W Falkon has its own motor and worm, which Lofrans lists without codes, so ask a Lofrans dealer. If the number of terminals changes, the control box has to change too.5,2,9
- Leave at least 300 mm between the underside of the deck and the top of the heaped chain, and keep the chain angle at the bow roller under 90°. A shallow locker is the classic cause of jams and of the override mechanism kicking in on the way down; Lofrans’ remedy is to mount the windlass over the deepest part of the locker or to carry less chain.9
- Never let the windlass hold the boat: once the anchor is set or stowed, put the chain on a chain stopper and switch off the breaker. Before hauling or lowering under power, make sure the clutch is tight and the band brake released; before using the drum for warping, tighten the brake first so the anchor stays put, then free the clutch.9
- A Falkon that turns slowly usually has undersized cables, poor connections, dirty brushes or water in the motor. At 12 V it draws about 210 A at working load, so the cable has to be 50 mm² up to 15 m of total run and 75 mm² beyond. The breaker protects against overload, not against overheating from long runs: after it trips, wait a few minutes before resetting, and run the engine or generator while hauling.9,2
- The Falkon takes the 367-series gypsies, which it shares with the Titan, not the 276-series gypsies of the Tigres, Cayman and Kobra. Match the gypsy to your chain’s standard, not just its diameter: for 10 mm chain there is one gypsy for ISO 4565 / 3/8 in HT (636570) and another for DIN 766 / 3/8 in BBB (631132), and 1/2 in G40 and BBB chain also need different gypsies (631036, 631033).2,3,4
