Lofrans Tigres
The Tigres is Lofrans’ best-known horizontal windlass: an anodised aluminium body on deck with the chain gypsy on one side and an independently driven rope drum on the other, a 1500 W DC motor under an IP67 cover, manual chain release, manual override by handle and a worm gearbox in an oil bath with a sight glass. It sits on a great many cruising yachts and motorboats and is still built by Lofrans (founded 1966 in Monza, today in Cambiago near Milan) in 12 V and 24 V and, with the pre-installed rope kit, also in 48 V. Two motor generations exist: the ‘Tigres 2011’ motors 602557/602558 with a 14 mm shaft and the motors 634369/634370 with a 17 mm shaft, each with its own worm. The gypsies are shared with the Kobra, Cayman and Royal; the 12 mm chain versions 600797/600818 are listed without published data.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Grease | Wash all surfaces with fresh water and soap (no chlorine), remove the salt, grease the main-shaft threads and clutch cones and check for corrosion: every 3 months if the boat is used more than 6 months a year or chartered, every 6 months for 2–6 months’ use, once a year for under 2 months’ use6 |
| Clutch | When greasing the cones (step B) or changing chain size: unscrew the gypsy with the handle, slide off the upper cone, gypsy and lower cone, wash with running water (never a pressure washer), check for corrosion or mechanical damage, grease the threads and all moving parts on reassembly6 |
| Electrical connections | Every 12 months: check the motor terminals, measure the voltage drop at the terminals and make sure the control box is in a dry place6 |
| Gear oil change | Replace all gaskets and the gearbox oil (0.5 l SAE 90–140): every 24 months with 2–6 or more than 6 months’ use a year, every 12 months on charter boats, every 36 months with under 2 months’ use6,9 |
| Full service | Every 36 months (every 24 months on charter boats): lift the windlass off the deck, clean the salt from under the base, check for corrosion and re-bed it. Charter boats also every 36 months: remove the stainless deck and stripper screws and refit them with a chromate-free anti-galvanic compound6 |
From the maintenance programme (section 6.1, page 13) in Lofrans’ installation and user’s manual for the Lion 1000, Cayman 88, Tigres and Falkon. Lofrans gives calendar intervals by months of use per year, not operating hours, and the warranty lapses if the programme is not followed. Disconnect the power before any maintenance.

Good to know
- Look at the sight glass before the season: the gearbox holds only 0.5 l of SAE 90–140 gear oil, so even a small loss matters. If the level keeps dropping, check the gearbox shaft seal 633252 rather than just topping up.9,1
- Before buying a motor or worm, measure the motor shaft: 14 mm on the ‘Tigres 2011’ motor 602557, 17 mm on 634369/634370, each with its own worm (635682 or 635691). Count the terminals too: if the number changes, the control box has to change with it.4,1
- At anchor, never let the windlass take the load: always use a chain stopper (or snubber) so wind, current and waves pull on the deck fitting, not on the gearbox. If the windlass stalls, slips or goes into self-protection while hauling, find the cause before carrying on.6
- Switch the breaker off whenever the windlass is not in use. It protects cables and motor against overload and short circuit, not against overheating from long runs; after it trips, wait a few minutes before resetting. A windlass that turns slowly usually has undersized cables, bad connections, dirty brushes or water in the motor, in that order of likelihood.6
- Lofrans recommends lead-acid, AGM or gel batteries. A lithium bank (Li-ion or LiFePO4) will quickly damage motor, control box and gearbox unless the installation has been specified for it.10
- To change chain size, change the gypsy and the outer cone clutch; the gypsies are the same on the Kobra, Cayman and Royal. Mind that Lofrans’ 7 mm gypsy is cut for ISO 4565 chain, not for 7 mm DIN 766, and check that the windlass can take the heavier chain before going up a size.3
