Lofrans X1 / X2 / X3
The X1, X2 and X3 are Lofrans’ vertical windlasses: only the gypsy, with or without a warping drum, sits on deck, while the motor and the worm gearbox in its oil bath hang below. Lofrans’ heavy-duty rating puts the X1 (500–1000 W, 12 V) on boats of about 20 to 40 ft and the X3 (1500–1700 W) on 40 to 60 ft, with the X2 (800–1500 W) in between; all three come with chrome-plated bronze or aluminium (ALU) deck parts, the X1 and X2 also as Dark Version. Lofrans (Italy, since 1966) names the X1 as successor of the Marlin, the X2 of the Progress 1 and Project 1000, and the X3 of the Progress 2 and Project 1500; the Project 1000 and 1500 still share gypsies, clutch cones, maintenance kits and manuals with the X2 and X3. Over the years X windlasses have been fitted with motors with circular, oval, square, triangular and B14 flanges, so identify yours before ordering.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Fresh-water wash | Step A – rinse all outer surfaces and hidden spots with fresh water and remove the salt: every 3 months if the boat is used more than 6 months a year or chartered, every 6 months with 2–6 months’ use, once a year with under 2 months. Dark Version: rinse weekly and cover it waterproof for winter storage16,17,27 |
| Grease | Step B – grease the rotating parts, above all the main-shaft threads and the clutch cones, and check for corrosion and mechanical stress: same rhythm as step A16,17,27 |
| Electrical connections | Step C – check the motor terminals and measure the voltage drop at them: every 12 months, whatever the use16,17,27 |
| Gaskets | Step D – replace all gaskets (the maintenance kit for your model): every 12 months on charter boats, every 24 months with 2–6 or more than 6 months’ use a year, every 36 months with under 2 months16,17,27,1,5,7,8 |
| Full service | Step E – take the windlass off the deck, clean the salt from under the base and re-seal it: every 24 months on charter boats, every 36 months otherwise16,17,27 |
| Clutch | Gypsy and cones, at each greasing or when changing chain size: on the X1 remove the hood and chain pusher first; unscrew the gypsy hand-wheel anticlockwise with the handle, slide off upper cone, gypsy and lower cone, wash with running water (never a pressure washer), check for corrosion and damage, grease threads and moving parts on reassembly16 |
From the maintenance programme (section 6) in Lofrans’ installation and user’s manuals for the X1, the X2/Project 1000 and the X3/Project 1500, which share the same table. Lofrans staggers it by months of use per year, not by operating hours, and the warranty lapses if it is not followed. The X programme has no separate oil-change step; oil type and quantity are in the specifications. Disconnect the power before any maintenance.

| Power cable size | By total cable length (positive + negative), up to 15 m / 15–25 m: X1 500 W 16 / 25 mm², 800 W 16 / 35 mm², 1000 W 25 / 50 mm² · X2 and Project 1000: 700 W 16 / 25 mm² at 12 V or 10 / 16 mm² at 24 V; 1000 and 1500 W 25 / 35 mm² at 12 V or 16 / 25 mm² at 24 V · X3 and Project 1500 (1500 and 1700 W): 35 / 50 mm² at 12 V or 25 / 35 mm² at 24 V16,17,27 |
| Breaker / fuse | Lofrans breaker matched to the model: 35 A (X1 500 W), 70 A (X1 and X2 800 W, the 24 V X2 and X3), 100 A (X1 1000 W, most 12 V X2, X3 1500 W 12 V), 125 A (X3 1700 W 12 V); codes in the parts list. Lofrans’ breakers have a trip curve, not just a rated current21,3,6,9,16 |
| Control | Dual-direction solenoid pack (control box) supplied; mount it dry near the windlass, and the up/down panel where the operator can see the windlass. Replacement boxes go by voltage, motor power and number of motor terminals16,3,6,9,22 |
| Mounting | Standard studs for a deck thickness of 18–30 mm on the X1 (minimum 10 mm on request), 25–40 mm on the X2 and Project 1000, 50–70 mm on the X3 and Project 1500; other thicknesses on request. Bed the base on the supplied gasket with silicone, not permanent glue; on aluminium boats an insulating gasket (not supplied) goes under the base16,17,27 |
| Years built | X1, X2 and X3 are in Lofrans’ range in 2026; Lofrans publishes no launch years. Jimmy Green dates the first-generation X2 motor before 2010, the X3 has separate manuals for units built before and after 2014, and the Project 1500 parts list is dated 2006, the Project 1000 list 201211,12,9,18,17 |
| Warranty | 3 years limited, on condition that the maintenance programme is kept; motors and electrics, gaskets and seals, and windlasses on charter boats 1 year. A finger broken in chain-only use is not covered16 |
Good to know
- The finger (Kit F) is only needed when the rode is rope and chain. With an all-chain rode take it off: Lofrans says it breaks otherwise, and a finger broken in chain-only use is not covered by the warranty.16
- An oil trace between motor and gearbox usually means the motor coupling has worked loose: the worm then turns off-centre and the gasket starts to leak. Find out why the bolts came loose, check the motor shaft and the worm bore for ovality and whether oil has reached the motor, and renew the gaskets. The gearbox holds only 0.15–0.30 l of SAE 90–140 gear oil, so even a small loss counts.16,28
- Before ordering a motor, compare yours with the motor table in Lofrans’ FAQ: flange (circular, oval, square, triangular or B14), shaft diameter (11, 14, 17 or 19 mm on the X series) and number of terminals. On the X3 the gearbox also depends on the flange (631989 for B14, 631991 for triangular), and if the number of terminals changes, the control box has to change with it.11,9,22
- Lofrans names the successors of its retired windlasses: Marlin → X1, Progress 1 and Project 1000 → X2, Progress 2 and Project 1500 → X3. The Project 1000 and 1500 still take the X2 and X3 gypsies, clutch cones and maintenance kits (72038, 72040); for the Progress and the Marlin only the old parts lists are online.11,6,9,29
- If the windlass runs slowly or trips the breaker, check in this order: cable cross-section, connections, dirty brushes, water in the motor, and whether the deck unit and the gearbox below are parallel (shim them if not). At anchor or on a mooring, always take the load on a chain stopper: the windlass is not a strong point.16
- When an X windlass replaces another one, measure the deck first: the standard studs and shaft suit 18–30 mm on the X1, 25–40 mm on the X2 and 50–70 mm on the X3. If the key shaft still engages the gearbox along its full length, longer studs are enough; otherwise ask Lofrans for a longer shaft.16,17,27
